Chapter 6: The Transfer Nobody Could Explain
Ryan Mitchell read the statement twice.
Then a third time.
The date was six weeks earlier, on a Friday when he had spent the entire day at a regional distribution center outside Macon. He remembered that day because a storm had delayed several shipments, and he'd returned home after nine in the evening with wet shoes and a headache.
He had not transferred $18,500.
He was certain of that.
His savings account was linked to his personal banking profile, protected by a password and two-factor authentication. He rarely moved money from it without first checking the balance and reviewing the transaction details.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Have you checked the actual account?””
She shook her head.
“Then how do you know this is real?””
“Because I saw the transaction.””
“On what?””
“Your laptop.””
He pointed at the screen.
“This document was created recently. It says personal copy. That doesn't tell me whether the transaction happened.””
“I know what I saw.””
“Then show me the original.””
“I don't have it.””
“Where did this scan come from?””
Vanessa pressed her fingers against the edge of the counter.
“I found it in one of your folders.””
“Which folder?””
She hesitated.
“I told you. I don't remember.””
Ryan Mitchell closed the document and opened the file properties.
The creation date appeared.
Yesterday.
He checked the modified date.
Also yesterday.
His face grew still.
“This wasn't on my laptop six weeks ago.””
Vanessa looked at the screen.
“Maybe it was copied here yesterday.””
“By whom?””
“I don't know.””
Ryan Mitchell studied her.
He wanted to believe she was simply frightened. If someone had accessed their accounts without permission, they had a serious problem to solve. He didn't want to waste time fighting with his wife while their savings might be at risk.
But he also knew that the document had appeared on his computer the previous day, and Vanessa had admitted to showing it to Ryan Cole.
“Did you create this file?”” he asked.
“No.””
“Did Ryan Cole?””
“No.””
“How do you know?””
“Because he didn't have access to your laptop until I showed him the document.””
Ryan Mitchell stared at her.
“You just said you found it in one of my folders.””
“I did.””
“And now you're saying you showed it to him.””
“Yes.””
“So you found it, opened it, and then showed it to him?””
Vanessa nodded reluctantly.
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to know what it meant.””
“Why didn't you ask me?””
She gave him a bitter look.
“Would you have told me?””
“Yes.””
“You've been keeping things from me for months.””
“About what?””
“Money. Work. Everything.””
Ryan Mitchell leaned both hands against the counter.
“Vanessa, if you believed money was missing, you could have asked me to open the bank account. You could have called the bank. You could have told me you were worried.””
“I tried to handle it myself.””
“With the gardener?””
Her cheeks flushed.
“Don't keep bringing him into this.””
“He's already involved. You brought him into it.””
Vanessa turned away.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Ryan Mitchell reached for his phone.
“I'm calling the bank.””
Vanessa spun around.
“Don't.””
He stopped.
The urgency in her voice was immediate.
He lowered the phone slowly.
“Why shouldn't I?””
“Because we don't know what's happening yet.””
“Exactly. That's why I'm calling.””
“What if they freeze the account?””
“Then we'll deal with it.””
“What if they start investigating?””
“Vanessa, if someone took $18,500 from our savings, I want an investigation.””
She stared at him.
He watched the fear in her expression deepen.
And suddenly he wondered whether she was frightened because their money might be gone—or because he was about to discover something she had been keeping from him.
Ryan unlocked his phone and opened his banking app.
The login screen appeared.
He entered his credentials and waited for the account summary to load.
The balance appeared.
Ryan Mitchell frowned.
He checked it again.
Then he opened the transaction history and searched the date shown on the scanned statement.
There it was.
A transfer of $18,500.
The money had left his savings account six weeks earlier.
His fingers went cold.
He opened the transaction details.
The recipient field showed a partial account number and a transfer reference he didn't recognize. The transaction had been authorized through an online banking session.
Ryan Mitchell felt his stomach tighten.
The transfer was real.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know the money was gone?””
She nodded slowly.
“How long have you known?””
“About a week.””
He stared at her.
“A week?””
“I wasn't sure what I was looking at.””
“You knew eighteen thousand five hundred dollars was missing from our savings account for a week, and you didn't tell me?””
“I thought it might be an error.””
“You could have asked me.””
“I didn't want to worry you.””
Ryan Mitchell let out a disbelieving breath.
“You didn't want to worry me, so you kept a missing eighteen thousand dollars secret and invited the gardener into our bedroom to discuss it?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“When you say it like that, it sounds terrible.””
“How else should I say it?””
She wiped her cheek.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
“I don't know!””
Her voice broke on the last word.
For a moment, Ryan Mitchell saw something that might have been genuine panic. Vanessa was frightened, and whatever she had done, the fear itself seemed real.
He softened his voice slightly.
“Tell me everything from the beginning.””
She shook her head.
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because I promised someone I wouldn't.””
Ryan Mitchell went completely still.
The kitchen clock ticked above the doorway.
Outside, a truck rumbled down the street. The sound faded, leaving the two of them standing on opposite sides of the counter.
“You promised someone?”” he repeated.
Vanessa looked down.
“I shouldn't have said that.””
“No. You shouldn't have.””
She pressed her palms against her eyes.
“Ryan, please. I didn't mean for any of this to happen.””
He took a slow breath.
“Who did you promise?””
She didn't answer.
He looked at the transaction again.
The transfer reference contained a short series of letters and numbers. He copied it into a note on his phone, then opened the bank's secure messaging function.
Vanessa watched him.
“What are you doing?””
“Reporting an unauthorized transfer.””
“Ryan, wait.””
He looked up.
“Why?””
“Because if you report it, they might contact the recipient.””
“That's what banks do when someone reports a suspicious transaction.””
“But what if the recipient isn't who you think it is?””
Ryan Mitchell stared at her.
“Do you know who received the money?””
Vanessa's mouth opened slightly.
Then she looked toward the hallway.
It was a tiny movement, but he followed her gaze.
The front door was closed.
Beyond it, the abandoned mower remained on the lawn, its engine silent.
Ryan Mitchell turned back.
“Vanessa. Who received the money?””
She took a step away from the counter.
“I don't know the whole story.””
“Tell me the part you do know.””
Her hands shook.
“I recognized the account.””
“Whose account?””
She pressed her lips together.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him, tears gathering along her lower lashes.
“It's connected to someone you know.””
Ryan Mitchell felt his pulse quicken.
“Someone from work?””
She shook her head.
“Someone in your family?””
Her silence answered before she could.
Ryan Mitchell gripped the edge of the counter.
“My family?””
Vanessa nodded once.
“Whose account was it?””
She drew a trembling breath.
“Your brother's.””
Ryan Mitchell stopped moving.
His younger brother, Marcus, had borrowed money from him years ago after a failed business venture. Ryan had helped him pay off his debts, but the two had agreed that the financial arrangement was finished.
They hadn't discussed money in months.
Marcus lived across town. He had a steady job, a wife, and two children. Ryan had attended his daughter's birthday party three weeks earlier and had spent most of the afternoon helping the kids build a cardboard castle in the backyard.
Nothing about that afternoon had seemed unusual.
“Marcus?”” Ryan asked.
Vanessa nodded.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“I know.””
“Why would my brother take money from my account?””
“I don't know.””
“Did you speak to him?””
She hesitated.
Ryan Mitchell's expression hardened.
“Did you speak to my brother about this?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Last week.””
He stared at her.
“You called Marcus about money missing from my savings account before you told me?””
“I wanted to understand what was happening.””
“What did he say?””
Vanessa's tears spilled over.
“He said I should leave it alone.””
Ryan Mitchell felt the room close in around him.
“And you listened to him?””
“I didn't know what else to do.””
He looked down at his phone, where the bank's message field remained open.
For weeks, he had believed the only serious problem in his life was the pressure at work. He had thought his marriage was stable, his finances secure, and his family trustworthy.
Now he was looking at a missing transfer, a secret meeting, and a wife who had contacted his brother behind his back.
He returned to the transaction details.
The recipient account was associated with Marcus's name, but the reference field contained something else: a note identifying the transfer as a repayment.
Repayment for what?
Ryan Mitchell had never agreed to lend his brother another eighteen thousand dollars.
He turned the phone toward Vanessa.
“What does this mean?””
She looked at the screen.
Then she covered her mouth.
Ryan Mitchell watched her face lose what little color remained.
“You know something,” he said.
Vanessa shook her head, but her eyes had already betrayed her.
“Ryan, I swear I didn't take the money.””
“I didn't ask whether you took it. I asked what the reference means.””
She took a step backward.
“I can't explain that.””
“Why not?””
“Because Marcus told me not to tell you.””
Ryan Mitchell felt a deep, unfamiliar anger rise through him.
His brother had apparently moved money from his account, and his wife had been aware of it for a week. She had spoken to Marcus, involved the gardener, and kept the entire matter hidden while Ryan continued going to work, paying bills, and making plans for their future.
He looked at her.
“Did Marcus tell you where the money went?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
She glanced toward the staircase again.
For a second, Ryan Mitchell thought she might refuse to answer.
Then she whispered, “He said it was for something that belongs to both of us.””
Ryan stared at her.
“What belongs to both of us?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I don't know how to tell you this.””
“Try.””
She looked directly into his eyes.
“The money wasn't supposed to come from your savings. Marcus said he was correcting something that should have been done years ago.””
Ryan Mitchell felt his heartbeat slow into something heavy and deliberate.
“What should have been done?””
Vanessa swallowed.
Then her phone vibrated on the counter.
Both of them looked down.
A new message had appeared from an unknown number.
Vanessa reached for it instinctively, but Ryan was closer.
He picked up the phone.
May you like
The message contained only one sentence.
*Tell your husband to stop looking into the transfer, or he'll find out what his father did.*
