Chapter 10: The Sister Who Survived
“I’m not Simone.””
The words landed harder than anything Helen had confessed.
I stared at the woman standing in front of me.
She had Simone’s face.
Simone’s voice.
Simone’s scar.
But now she was telling me she wasn't Simone.
Vanessa was crying behind her.
Derrick looked at the floor.
Nobody seemed surprised.
I took one step backward.
“Then who are you?””
She closed her eyes.
“My name is Selena.””
I looked at the photograph on the phone.
The woman beside Raymond.
The woman beside Daniel.
The woman whose face had appeared in the photograph at the grave marked *SIMONE CARTER*.
“You let me believe you were Simone.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Simone is dead.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She nodded through her tears.
“When did she die?””
“Three years ago,” Selena said.
“How?””
Selena's jaw tightened.
“Because of me.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It will.””
She pulled a chair toward herself and sat.
For the first time since she entered the restaurant, she looked exhausted.
“I was the sister nobody talked about,” she said.
“Mom sent me away when I was seventeen. Simone stayed. Vanessa stayed.
I was the problem child. The unstable one. The daughter nobody wanted around.””
Helen looked away.
Selena continued.
“Simone was the opposite. She believed people could be saved. Even Mom.””
She laughed softly.
“That was her biggest mistake.””
I sat across from her.
“What happened three years ago?””
Selena looked at Vanessa.
“Tell him.””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“Simone found out about Mom's accounts.””
I listened.
“She found the shell companies. The transfers. Everything. She wanted to go to the police.””
“Why didn't she?””
“Because Mom threatened her.””
Selena nodded.
“Then Simone called me.””
I looked at her.
“She told me she had evidence and wanted me to come home.””
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
Selena's eyes lowered.
“Mom found out.””
The restaurant was silent.
“She sent Raymond after us,” Selena said.
“He followed us to the house.””
“What happened?””
“Simone put the evidence in my bag and told me to run.””
Selena swallowed.
“I didn't want to leave her.””
“But you did.””
“I had no choice.””
Her voice cracked.
“Raymond caught us.””
Vanessa whispered, “And Simone…”
Selena nodded.
“She died that night.””
I stared at her.
“What did your mother do?””
Selena looked at Helen.
Helen's eyes were wet now.
For once, she didn't look powerful.
She looked old.
“She killed Simone,” Selena said.
Helen whispered, “I didn't mean to.””
Selena's expression hardened.
“You put your hands around her throat.””
“I lost control.””
“You killed her.””
Helen closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
I looked at Helen.
“And then?””
Selena answered.
“Mom told everyone I was the one who died.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because she needed a body.””
I understood.
The funeral.
The casket.
The photographs.
The story everyone believed.
Helen had needed the world to believe Selena was dead.
But the body had been Simone.
Selena had survived.
She had disappeared.
And Vanessa had helped keep the secret.
I looked at my wife.
“You knew your sister was dead.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe the woman at the funeral was Selena.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I was terrified.””
“You should have told me.””
“I know.””
“Why didn't you?””
She looked toward Helen.
“Because Mom told me that if I spoke, you'd be next.””
I looked at Selena.
“And you came back pretending to be Simone.””
“Yes.””
“To expose Helen.””
“Yes.””
“But why involve Derrick?””
Selena looked at him.
“I didn't.””
Derrick frowned.
“What?””
“You thought you were helping Vanessa.””
“I was.””
“No,” Selena said.
“You were helping Daniel.””
Derrick's face drained of color.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Derrick shook his head.
“No.””
Selena took out her phone and played a recording.
Derrick's voice came through the speaker.
“Marcus is getting suspicious.””
Daniel answered.
“Then keep Vanessa close.””
Derrick's recorded voice said:
“What about Selena?””
Daniel replied:
“She thinks she's using you. Let her.””
The recording ended.
Derrick looked sick.
I stood.
“You worked for Daniel.””
“Not at first.””
“When?””
Derrick rubbed his face.
“He approached me after Vanessa asked me to investigate the accounts.””
I waited.
“He offered me money.””
“How much?””
“Twenty-five thousand.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You told me you were helping me.””
“I was.””
“You were reporting everything to Daniel.””
“I stopped.””
“When?””
“Two weeks ago.””
I shook my head.
“So the affair wasn't just a cover.””
Derrick looked at Vanessa.
“No.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
I felt strangely calm.
The anger had burned itself out.
All that remained was clarity.
I turned toward Helen.
“You poisoned my father.””
She nodded.
“You ordered my brakes cut.””
“Yes.””
“You forged the divorce papers.””
“Yes.””
“You stole from my company.””
“I moved money.””
“You destroyed my family.””
Helen looked at me.
“No.””
I frowned.
She pointed toward Vanessa.
“She did that.””
Vanessa flinched.
Helen continued.
“She chose lies. She chose secrecy. She chose to protect herself.””
I looked at my wife.
Helen wasn't entirely wrong.
That was what made it hurt.
Vanessa had never ordered my death.
But she had helped hide the truth.
She had lied.
She had cheated.
She had allowed me to grieve a sister who wasn't even the sister everyone said had died.
She had stood beside me at my father's funeral knowing there was a secret buried beneath every word.
I looked at her.
“You should have trusted me.””
“I know.””
“You should have come to me.””
“I know.””
“Why didn't you?””
Vanessa began crying again.
“Because I was ashamed.””
That answer finally broke something in me.
Not anger.
Something softer.
The memory of who we'd been.
I turned away.
Selena stood.
“Marcus.””
I looked at her.
“There is one thing left.””
“The third page.””
She nodded.
She reached inside her jacket.
I froze.
The folded paper came out.
She handed it to me.
“This is what Simone died protecting.””
I unfolded it.
My father's handwriting filled the page.
*Marcus,*
*If this reaches you, then I failed to protect you myself. I need you to know that Vanessa is not your enemy. She is frightened, confused, and surrounded by people who have made her believe silence is the only way to survive.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She covered her mouth.
I kept reading.
**The person you need to fear is Daniel. He has been working with Helen for years. He was the one who convinced her that killing me would solve everything.
He was the one who arranged the accident. Helen believes she gave the order, but Daniel created the plan.**
I looked at Helen.
She nodded slowly.
My father had known.
*There is one more thing. Daniel didn't steal from the company for Helen. He stole for himself. Helen was only useful because she could control Vanessa.*
I read the final lines.
*If Daniel is still alive, he will come after you. Do not fight him alone. Trust the person who survived the night everyone else thought was dead.*
I looked at Selena.
She gave a small nod.
My father had known about her.
Maybe he'd known everything.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
*You have the letter.*
Another appeared.
*Come to the warehouse alone.*
Then:
*Bring the truth.*
I showed the screen to Selena.
She immediately shook her head.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“He wants me there.””
“He wants you dead.””
“I know.””
Vanessa stood.
“Then I'm coming.””
The message from Daniel appeared again.
*If Vanessa comes, I release everything.*
Vanessa read it.
She went pale.
I looked at her.
“Everything?””
She nodded.
“Our financial records. Your father's files. The photographs.””
“Then let him.””
She stared at me.
“What?””
“For the first time, let the truth come out.””
Helen suddenly laughed.
“You have no idea what you're doing.””
I looked at her.
“I finally do.””
I turned toward the restaurant manager.
“Call the police.””
Helen's face changed.
Selena smiled.
Derrick pulled out his phone.
“I already did.””
Helen stared at him.
“You idiot.””
“No,” Derrick said.
“Just late.””
Outside, sirens began to approach.
Helen looked toward the door.
Then toward the windows.
She knew the game was over.
But she wasn't finished.
She reached into her handbag.
I saw the flash of metal.
“Mom!”” Vanessa screamed.
Selena moved first.
She grabbed Helen's wrist.
The object fell onto the floor.
A small gun.
Police rushed through the restaurant doors seconds later.
Helen was handcuffed before she could reach it.
She looked at me as officers led her away.
“You'll regret destroying this family.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at Selena.
Then at Derrick.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You destroyed it when you decided nobody deserved the truth.””
Helen was taken outside.
The restaurant became quiet again.
Sunlight still poured through the windows.
The same bright room.
The same tables.
The same wineglasses.
But nothing felt the same.
Vanessa stood in front of me.
“I don't expect you to forgive me.””
I looked at her wedding ring.
“I don't know if I can.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
“I loved you.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I loved you too.””
“Maybe we both forgot that love without honesty isn't enough.””
She slowly removed her wedding ring.
She placed it in my palm.
I closed my fingers around it.
Then I handed it back.
“Keep it.””
She looked surprised.
“Why?””
“Because I don't want revenge.””
I stepped away.
“I want the truth.””
Selena came to stand beside me.
For the first time, she didn't pretend to be Simone.
She didn't need to.
The police found Daniel that night.
They found Raymond two days later.
The financial records cleared my father's name.
The investigation proved he had been trying to expose the theft, not steal from the company.
Helen and Daniel were charged for the conspiracy, fraud, and my father's death.
Vanessa testified.
So did Derrick.
And I finally learned why my father had written one sentence that had haunted me for weeks:
*Trust the person who survived.*
He hadn't meant Vanessa.
He hadn't meant Helen.
He hadn't even meant himself.
He meant Selena.
Months later, I stood beside my father's grave with Selena.
She placed a single white rose against the stone.
“You think he'd forgive me?”” she asked.
I looked at the grave.
“He'd probably say you survived for a reason.””
She smiled.
“What about Vanessa?””
I was quiet for a moment.
“She has to live with what she did.””
“And you?””
I looked at the horizon.
“I have to live with what I didn't know.””
Selena touched my shoulder.
“You know now.””
I nodded.
For three years, I thought the worst thing that could happen to a marriage was betrayal.
I was wrong.
The worst thing is discovering that the person you trusted built an entire life around a lie—and realizing you were never supposed to survive long enough to question it.
Vanessa's lie began with a hospital excuse.
May you like
It ended with a grave bearing the wrong sister's name.
And the woman I thought was my wife's dead sister turned out to be the one person who had been fighting to keep me alive all along.
