Chapter 7: The Child Whose Name Was Never Mine
I read the hospital bracelet three times.
Vanessa Reed.
The name was unmistakable.
The photograph showed Derek standing outside a hospital room, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket. He looked younger, perhaps twenty-eight or twenty-nine. His hair was shorter, and he wore a gray sweatshirt.
But his smile was the same one I had seen across the restaurant table.
The date was twelve years earlier.
The month Vanessa and I got married.
I looked up.
"Who is this child?""
Vanessa was crying so hard she could barely speak.
"Marcus, please sit down.""
"Answer me.""
She pressed her hands together.
"His name is Ethan.""
"How old is he?""
"Twelve.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Twelve?""
She nodded.
"Is he Derek's son?""
"Yes.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"And whose son is he?""
Vanessa looked directly at me.
"Mine.""
The room seemed to tilt.
I placed the photograph on the table.
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the clock ticking above the kitchen doorway.
My wife had a child.
A child born twelve years ago.
A child whose existence I had never known.
And she had apparently hidden him throughout our entire marriage.
I gripped the edge of the table.
"Where is he?""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"He lives with my father.""
I stared at her.
"Your father?""
"Yes.""
"All this time?""
She nodded.
I stood and walked toward the window.
I needed to breathe.
I needed to understand how the woman I had shared a bed with for twelve years could have an entire child somewhere in the world without me knowing.
"Did you give birth to him before our wedding?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"Three weeks before.""
I turned around.
"Three weeks?""
She nodded.
I laughed once, quietly.
"You married me three weeks after giving birth to another man's child?""
Vanessa lowered her head.
"I was scared.""
"Of what?""
"Of losing you.""
I stared at her.
"Did you tell me you were pregnant?""
"No.""
"Did you tell me the baby existed?""
"No.""
"Did you tell me you were giving birth?""
She began sobbing.
"No.""
I sat down.
The wedding photographs on the shelf were directly in front of me.
Vanessa in her white dress.
Me smiling beside her.
Our families gathered around us.
Everyone celebrating.
I remembered her father giving a speech at the reception.
He had raised his glass and told me that I was the son he had never had.
I remembered the words because they had moved me.
Now I wondered whether he had been looking at me as a son or as someone useful.
"Did your father know?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did your mother?""
She looked down.
"She knew I had a baby, but she believed he was being adopted.""
I stared at her.
"Adopted?""
"That's what I told her.""
"Was he?""
"No.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Then what happened?""
Vanessa took a deep breath.
"Derek and I were together before you and I got engaged. When I became pregnant, he promised he would take responsibility. But we were fighting constantly. He had financial problems, and I didn't trust him.""
"Yet you kept sleeping with him.""
She looked away.
"Yes.""
"Then what?""
"When Ethan was born, Derek said he couldn't raise a child. He wanted to give him up.""
I looked at her.
"And you?""
"I didn't want that.""
"So you kept him?""
She shook her head.
"My father suggested that Ethan live with him temporarily. He said I could finish getting my life together, and then we would decide what to do.""
I leaned back.
"Temporarily.""
She nodded.
"Then you met me.""
"Yes.""
"And you decided to marry me.""
She covered her face.
"I loved you.""
I stared at her.
"Did you ever intend to tell me?""
She didn't answer.
That silence told me more than any confession.
I stood and walked into the hallway.
I looked at the family photographs again.
There was one from Christmas eight years earlier.
Vanessa was holding a small boy in a red sweater.
I remembered the picture.
She had told me he was her cousin's son.
His name was Ethan.
I had even bought him a toy truck that Christmas.
I turned around.
"That little boy in the Christmas picture.""
Vanessa looked confused.
"What?""
"The boy you said was your cousin's child.""
She began crying again.
"That was Ethan.""
I closed my eyes.
I remembered him running around the living room.
I remembered him calling Vanessa Auntie.
I remembered asking why he looked so much like Derek.
She had laughed and said many children looked alike.
I had believed her.
I had bought that child a Christmas present.
I had held him in my arms.
I had been standing inches away from the biggest secret of my marriage.
And everyone around me had known.
"How often have I seen him?"" I asked.
Vanessa looked down.
"Several times.""
"How many?""
"I don't know.""
"Did your father bring him to family gatherings?""
"Yes.""
I shook my head.
I couldn't process it.
"Did Derek know I was there?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did he ever watch me with his son?""
She didn't answer.
I looked at her.
"Did he?""
She whispered, "Yes.""
I felt sick.
I thought about every birthday, every Christmas, every family gathering.
I thought about Derek watching me shake his hand at some event while knowing I had no idea who he was.
I thought about Richard Cole calling me his son.
I thought about the photograph of Derek holding Ethan outside the hospital.
And suddenly, the financial arrangement began to make a different kind of sense.
The loan.
The property.
The trust.
My name on documents.
Vanessa receiving money.
Her father helping.
Derek returning after years of silence.
It wasn't simply an affair.
It was a family secret that had been maintained through an entire marriage.
I turned toward Vanessa.
"Did you use the money from the trust to support Ethan?""
She nodded.
"Some of it.""
"How much?""
"About sixty thousand dollars.""
I stared at her.
"Did you use my money to support another man's child?""
"Marcus, Ethan is innocent.""
I looked at her.
"I know that.""
My voice softened slightly.
"I have never blamed that child.""
She wiped her face.
"Then please understand why I did what I did.""
I shook my head.
"You're confusing two things. I can have compassion for Ethan without accepting what you and everyone else did to me.""
She lowered her eyes.
Then she said something I hadn't expected.
"Ethan knows about you.""
I stopped.
"What?""
"He knows you're my husband.""
"Does he know I'm not his father?""
She nodded.
"He knows Derek is his biological father.""
I looked toward the staircase.
"Does he know what happened?""
"No. Not everything.""
I sat down again.
"Has he ever asked about me?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Sometimes.""
"What did you tell him?""
She took a breath.
"I told him you were a good man.""
I looked at her.
"That's what you told him?""
"Yes.""
I almost smiled.
A good man.
A man who unknowingly paid for things.
A man who bought Christmas presents.
A man who stood in family photographs beside a woman who had another life hidden behind his back.
At 10:42 a.m., my phone rang.
Robert.
I answered.
"Hello?""
"Mr. Reed, we've reviewed additional trust records.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"What did you find?""
"The trust was established using documents that appear to contain your personal information. We also found a beneficiary amendment dated shortly after your wedding.""
I closed my eyes.
"Who made the amendment?""
"Your wife's father appears to have submitted it.""
I looked at Vanessa.
Robert continued.
"There's another issue. The trust contains a life insurance policy.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"An insurance policy with you listed as the insured person and Vanessa as the beneficiary.""
I felt cold.
"How much?""
"Five hundred thousand dollars.""
I stared at the floor.
"Did I authorize it?""
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
I ended the call slowly.
Vanessa was watching me.
"What's wrong?""
I looked at her.
"There's a life insurance policy in my name.""
Her face changed.
I continued.
"Half a million dollars. You're the beneficiary.""
She started shaking her head.
"Marcus, I didn't—"
"Did you know?""
She didn't answer.
I stood.
"Did you know?""
Finally, she whispered, "Yes.""
I stepped backward.
"Why?""
She began crying.
"I never wanted anything to happen to you.""
I stared at her.
"Then why did you insure my life without telling me?""
She covered her mouth.
And before she could answer, my phone vibrated again.
A text from an unknown number.
**Unknown: Mr. Reed, my name is Ethan Cole. I'm Vanessa's son.
My father told me you finally know about me. There's something you need to see.**
A photograph followed.
It showed Ethan sitting at a desk.
Beside him was a folder.
On the front, written in black marker, were the words:
*THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.*
May you like
Then another message arrived.
*Ethan: My dad says you were supposed to be part of this from the beginning. But I don't think you know what they planned for you.*
