Chapter 8: The Boy Who Knew My Name

I stared at the message.

Ethan Cole.

Twelve years old.

The boy I had once bought Christmas presents for.

The boy I had held in my arms without knowing he was my wife's child.

Now he was sending me messages about an agreement that apparently involved my entire life.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Does Ethan have his own phone?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who gave him my number?""

She looked toward the floor.

"Probably Derek.""

I read the message again.

My dad says you were supposed to be part of this from the beginning.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa started crying.

"I don't know.""

I turned toward her.

"You keep saying that.""

"Because I don't know what Derek tells Ethan.""

I opened the photograph.

The folder sat on a wooden desk.

The handwriting was unmistakably Derek's.

I replied.

*Marcus: Ethan, I need to understand what you're talking about. Can you tell me where you got that folder?*

The reply came less than a minute later.

*Ethan: Grandpa keeps it in his office. Dad told me not to touch it.*

I looked at Vanessa.

"Your father has the original agreement?""

She nodded.

"Apparently.""

I typed another message.

*Marcus: Can I speak to you?*

The typing indicator appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally, a response came.

*Ethan: I don't know if I'm allowed to.*

I put the phone down.

The thought of an innocent twelve-year-old being dragged into this situation made me feel physically ill.

I had no desire to interrogate him.

He wasn't responsible for the decisions made by the adults around him.

But he might have information that could help me understand what had happened.

I turned to Vanessa.

"I want to meet him.""

She looked frightened.

"Marcus, I don't think that's a good idea.""

"Why?""

"Because Derek will find out.""

I stared at her.

"He's already involved.""

She shook her head.

"You don't understand. Derek gets angry when people go against him.""

I leaned forward.

"Are you telling me he's dangerous?""

She hesitated.

"He's unpredictable.""

I let out a slow breath.

"Then you should have told me that before you brought him into our marriage.""

She lowered her head.

At noon, Daniel arrived.

I explained the latest developments.

When I showed him the message from Ethan, he read it twice.

"That's a child," he said quietly.

"I know.""

"Don't ask him to investigate anything. Don't put him in the middle.""

"I'm not going to.""

Daniel nodded.

"Good. But this makes me even more concerned about the adults involved.""

I showed him the photograph.

He examined the folder.

"Can you get the original?""

"His grandfather has it.""

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"Does your father know Marcus has seen this?""

She nodded.

"Probably.""

Daniel sighed.

"Then we need to be careful.""

I called Robert.

He advised me not to meet Derek or Richard without legal representation. He also told me to preserve the messages and avoid making promises to anyone.

By 2:00 p.m., I had placed a fraud alert on my credit file and contacted my bank.

Then I made another discovery.

My joint savings account had been accessed repeatedly from a device I didn't recognize.

The account history showed transfers to a private account.

The most recent transaction was for $18,000.

I showed the statement to Daniel.

"Do you recognize this account?""

He shook his head.

"Have you authorized these transfers?""

"No.""

He leaned closer.

"Then tell your attorney immediately.""

I sent the records to Robert.

A few minutes later, Vanessa walked into the study.

"Marcus, my father wants to speak to you.""

I didn't look up.

"Tell him to call Robert.""

"He says it's urgent.""

"Everything seems urgent now.""

She stood beside the desk.

"He says he can explain the trust.""

I looked at her.

"Then he can explain it to my attorney.""

She nodded slowly.

Then she said, "He also wants you to meet Ethan.""

I paused.

"Where?""

"At his house.""

I looked at Daniel.

He shook his head slightly.

I returned my attention to Vanessa.

"Not alone.""

She nodded.

"Okay.""

We arranged for the meeting to take place at a neutral location the following afternoon, with Daniel present.

Robert agreed to remain available by phone.

At 4:30 p.m., I received another message from Ethan.

*Ethan: Are you mad at me?*

I stared at the screen.

The question broke something inside me.

I typed carefully.

*Marcus: No, buddy. None of this is your fault.*

A few seconds later:

*Ethan: Dad said you hate me because I'm not yours.*

I closed my eyes.

Then I wrote:

*Marcus: I don't hate you. I don't blame you for anything the adults have done.*

His response came almost immediately.

*Ethan: Okay. Because I always thought you were nice.*

I placed the phone on the desk.

For the first time since discovering the affair, I felt something other than anger or disbelief.

I felt sorry for a child who had been taught to believe that the truth was something he needed to hide.

The following afternoon, Daniel drove me to the meeting.

Richard Cole's house was a large two-story property in a quiet neighborhood.

I had visited it countless times.

I had celebrated birthdays there.

I had helped Richard repair a fence.

I had even spent Thanksgiving in that house.

Now I was entering it knowing that the man who had welcomed me into his family had helped conceal an entire child and a financial arrangement involving my identity.

Richard opened the door.

"Marcus.""

I nodded.

"Richard.""

He stepped aside.

"Come in.""

The living room looked exactly as I remembered it.

Family photographs covered the walls.

There was one of Vanessa as a little girl.

Another of Richard and his late wife.

And on a shelf near the fireplace sat a photograph of Ethan.

I stopped.

The boy was smiling, wearing a blue baseball uniform.

Richard followed my gaze.

"He's a good kid.""

I looked at him.

"Then why did everyone make him part of this lie?""

Richard lowered his eyes.

Before he could answer, footsteps came from the hallway.

Ethan appeared.

He was taller than I remembered.

He had Derek's eyes and Vanessa's smile.

He wore a gray hoodie and held a folder against his chest.

He looked at me nervously.

"Hi.""

I stood.

"Hey, Ethan.""

He looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

"You're not mad?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

He seemed relieved.

I gestured toward the couch.

"Want to sit?""

He nodded.

We sat across from each other.

Richard remained standing.

Daniel watched quietly.

Ethan placed the folder on the coffee table.

"Grandpa said I shouldn't show you this.""

Richard immediately stepped forward.

"Ethan, I told you—"

"Grandpa, you said I shouldn't get involved," Ethan interrupted.

"But Dad keeps saying Marcus is the reason everything went wrong.""

Richard's face tightened.

I looked at Ethan.

"Did your dad tell you that?""

He nodded.

"He said you were supposed to help him.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"What else did he say?""

Ethan opened the folder.

Inside were several documents.

The first was a business agreement.

The second was a copy of the trust paperwork.

The third was a handwritten letter.

I picked up the letter.

It was dated eleven years earlier.

Derek had written it shortly after Vanessa and I married.

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

By the third, my hands had begun to tremble.

The letter explained that Derek had agreed to transfer his financial interest in the property to Richard in exchange for a repayment arrangement.

But the final paragraph was different.

It stated that if Vanessa's marriage ended, Derek expected to regain control of the property and the trust.

I looked at Richard.

"What does my marriage have to do with this?""

Richard sat down.

"Because Derek believed you would eventually provide the financial backing he needed.""

I stared at him.

"You used my marriage as a business strategy?""

Richard looked ashamed.

"It wasn't supposed to become this complicated.""

I put the letter down.

"Who created the trust?""

Richard hesitated.

"Your wife and Derek.""

"Using my information?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She was sitting beside the doorway, crying.

Then I looked at Ethan.

"Do you know why your father kept these documents?""

Ethan nodded.

"He said they were proof that everything belonged to him.""

"Did he say anything else?""

The boy hesitated.

Then he reached into the folder and removed a folded piece of paper.

"I found this in Dad's car.""

He handed it to me.

I opened it.

It was a printed email.

The sender was Derek.

The recipient was Richard.

The subject line read:

*PHASE TWO — MARCUS.*

I read the message.

It described a plan to approach me once the financial arrangement was complete.

Derek intended to present himself as the person who had helped recover Vanessa's original investment.

Then, according to the email, he would convince me to sign additional documents transferring control of the property and trust.

At the bottom was a sentence that made my blood run cold.

Once Marcus signs, Vanessa and I can finally stop pretending this marriage is necessary.

I looked up.

Vanessa was shaking.

Richard had gone pale.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Who wrote this?""

Ethan answered quietly.

"My dad.""

I folded the email.

"Where is Derek now?""

Richard looked toward the front door.

"He's coming here.""

I stood.

"Why?""

Richard swallowed.

"He knows Ethan took the folder.""

I looked at Daniel.

Then at Vanessa.

And before anyone could say another word, a car horn sounded outside.

Ethan's face went white.

"That's him.""

Richard walked toward the window.

Then he turned around.

"Marcus, you need to know something before Derek comes inside.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

Richard swallowed.

"Derek isn't just the father of Ethan.""

May you like

He glanced at Vanessa.

"He's also the person who originally introduced your wife to the man who arranged your life insurance policy.""
