Chapter 9: The Man Who Planned My Marriage

The front door opened before Richard could explain.

Derek walked into the house wearing a navy suit and carrying a leather briefcase.

He looked at Ethan first.

Then at the folder on the coffee table.

Finally, his eyes settled on me.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Derek smiled.

"Marcus.""

I didn't return the smile.

"Derek.""

He placed his briefcase beside the fireplace.

"I suppose things have become a little complicated.""

Daniel stood.

"Mr. Mitchell, we're not here for a social visit.""

Derek glanced at him.

"And you are?""

"Daniel Harris. Marcus's friend.""

Derek nodded.

"Good to meet you.""

Daniel didn't respond.

Derek turned toward Vanessa.

"Can we talk?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

His smile disappeared.

"Vanessa, don't make this worse.""

I stepped between them.

"She said no.""

Derek looked at me.

Then he laughed quietly.

"You really don't understand what's happening here, do you?""

I stared at him.

"Then explain it.""

He glanced toward Richard.

Richard lowered his eyes.

Derek sighed.

"Fine.""

He pulled out a chair and sat down.

For a moment, he looked almost comfortable.

Like a man attending a business meeting.

"Let's start with the beginning," he said.

"Vanessa and I were together before you came along. We had plans. We had a child. We had investments.""

I looked at him.

"And you stole money.""

His expression hardened.

"That's one interpretation.""

"What's the other?""

"Business went badly.""

I shook my head.

"You used my identity.""

"I used information that was already available.""

"You forged my signature.""

"I didn't personally sign anything.""

I leaned forward.

"Who did?""

He looked toward Richard.

Richard said nothing.

Derek shrugged.

"People handled the paperwork.""

I stared at him.

"People?""

He smiled faintly.

"You'd be surprised how many people are involved in real estate transactions.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mr. Mitchell, you're making statements that may have legal consequences.""

Derek looked at him.

"Then perhaps I should stop talking.""

I gestured toward the documents.

"Why did you create the trust?""

Derek leaned back.

"Because Vanessa and I had a financial arrangement that needed protection.""

"From whom?""

"From creditors. From business partners. From bad timing.""

I laughed.

"Apparently, from me too.""

He didn't deny it.

I picked up the email Ethan had found.

"Phase Two. Explain this.""

Derek looked at the paper.

His expression changed for the first time.

"Where did you get that?""

"Ethan found it.""

Derek turned toward the boy.

"What did I tell you about going through my things?""

Ethan lowered his head.

I stepped closer.

"Don't talk to him like that.""

Derek looked at me.

"He's my son.""

"Then act like his father.""

The room went silent.

Derek slowly stood.

"You're getting emotional.""

I stared at him.

"You planned to make me sign away control of property I didn't even know I owned.""

He adjusted his jacket.

"The trust was always meant to benefit Vanessa.""

"Then why was my name used?""

"Because your credit made the arrangement possible.""

I nodded slowly.

"Thank you.""

He frowned.

"For what?""

"For finally admitting it.""

Derek realized what he had said.

His eyes moved toward Daniel.

Then toward Richard.

Daniel quietly took out his phone.

Derek's expression darkened.

"Are you recording me?""

Daniel replied calmly.

"We're preserving the conversation.""

Derek laughed.

"You're wasting your time.""

I looked at him.

"Tell me about the insurance policy.""

His smile disappeared.

"What insurance policy?""

"The one with me as the insured person and Vanessa as the beneficiary.""

He glanced at her.

She looked down.

Derek sighed.

"That was part of the financial planning.""

"Did I authorize it?""

He didn't answer.

I took another step forward.

"Did I?""

Derek opened his briefcase and removed a document.

"Look, Marcus. Nobody wanted anything to happen to you. The policy was just protection.""

"Protection for whom?""

"For the family.""

I laughed.

"What family?""

He gestured toward Ethan.

"This family.""

I looked at the boy.

Then back at Derek.

"You used my name to secure a loan, established a trust using my information, and purchased life insurance without my consent. And you want me to believe this was all for the family?""

Derek's expression hardened.

"You weren't supposed to find out like this.""

I felt a chill.

"How was I supposed to find out?""

He looked toward Vanessa.

"She was supposed to explain everything eventually.""

I turned to her.

"Eventually?""

Vanessa was crying.

Derek continued.

"Once the debt was settled, we would have told you about Ethan. You would have understood that Vanessa had a child before you met.""

I stared at him.

"And what about the money?""

"We would have resolved that too.""

"And the insurance?""

He shrugged.

"Administrative details.""

I shook my head.

There was something astonishing about his confidence.

He genuinely believed that if he used the right language, he could make an enormous betrayal sound like a minor misunderstanding.

I looked at Richard.

"Did you know about the insurance policy?""

Richard nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you know my signature was forged?""

He looked at the floor.

"I suspected.""

I closed my eyes.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"Did you know Derek intended to destroy my marriage?""

Richard looked up.

Derek immediately interrupted.

"That's ridiculous.""

I held up the email.

"It says you wanted Vanessa and me to stop pretending our marriage was necessary.""

Derek shrugged.

"People say things when they're frustrated.""

"Was that the plan?""

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

Finally, he said, "The plan was for Vanessa to return to the life we had originally intended.""

I felt something inside me settle.

There was no confusion anymore.

No mystery.

No missing explanation that could make this acceptable.

Derek had never viewed me as a husband.

He had viewed me as an opportunity.

And Vanessa had allowed him to.

I turned toward her.

"Did you know about this plan?""

She was sobbing.

"Not everything.""

"Did you know he intended to use my name?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know he wanted me to sign away the property?""

She nodded.

I looked at her.

"And you still brought him into our home?""

She covered her face.

"I thought I could stop it.""

Derek laughed.

"Vanessa, don't pretend you were innocent.""

She looked up.

"Shut up, Derek.""

He raised his eyebrows.

"Excuse me?""

"You heard me.""

For the first time, she looked directly at him without fear.

"You told me everything would be fixed. You told me the money would be returned. You told me Marcus would never be involved.""

Derek shook his head.

"You agreed to all of it.""

"Because you threatened me!""

His expression changed.

I turned toward him.

"What did you threaten her with?""

Derek said nothing.

Vanessa stood.

"You told me you would expose everything. You told me you'd take Ethan away if I didn't cooperate.""

Ethan looked up.

"Take me away?""

Vanessa immediately turned toward him.

"Baby, no.""

The boy stood slowly.

"Why would Dad say that?""

Nobody answered.

Derek rubbed his forehead.

"This is exactly why children shouldn't be involved in adult conversations.""

I stepped toward him.

"You've involved him in every part of this.""

Derek picked up his briefcase.

"Fine. I'm leaving.""

Daniel moved toward the doorway.

"Before you do, I suggest you speak with your attorney.""

Derek stopped.

"Why?""

"Because Marcus has already reported the suspected identity theft and unauthorized financial activity.""

Derek looked at me.

For the first time, his face showed genuine concern.

"You did what?""

I nodded.

"Everything is with my attorney now.""

He glanced toward Vanessa.

"You wouldn't.""

She looked at him.

"Yes, I would.""

Derek stared at her.

Then he turned toward Richard.

"Tell him what happens if he goes through with this.""

Richard remained silent.

Derek's voice rose.

"Richard!""

Ethan suddenly stepped forward.

"Grandpa, just tell him.""

Richard looked at his grandson.

Then he looked at me.

Finally, he spoke.

"There's another document.""

Derek went pale.

"Richard, don't.""

Richard walked to the bookshelf and removed a thick black binder.

He placed it on the coffee table.

"Your father gave me this last year," he told Ethan.

"I kept it because I thought I might need it someday.""

Derek stepped forward.

"That's private.""

Daniel moved between him and the table.

Richard opened the binder.

Inside were copies of financial statements, emails, and legal correspondence.

At the very back was a document titled:

*Beneficiary and Ownership Instructions — Final Version.*

I picked it up.

My name appeared at the top.

Vanessa's name appeared below it.

But the third name was the one that made me stop breathing.

Ethan Cole.

I looked at Richard.

"What is this?""

Richard spoke slowly.

"It was the original plan for the trust.""

I read the document.

The arrangement stated that upon my death, the insurance proceeds and certain trust assets would be transferred into a fund for Ethan.

Vanessa would control the fund until he reached adulthood.

Derek would serve as the designated administrator.

I looked up.

"So the insurance money was meant for Ethan?""

Richard nodded.

I looked at Derek.

"Why?""

Derek's expression was cold.

"Because he's my son.""

I placed the document down.

"You could have supported your son without stealing my identity.""

Derek looked at me.

"You don't understand what it costs to raise a child.""

I stared at him.

"And you thought I should pay for yours?""

He didn't answer.

Then I noticed something in the final section.

A handwritten amendment.

It was dated three months earlier.

It changed the designated administrator of the trust.

I read the name.

My hands went cold.

The new administrator was not Derek.

It was Richard.

And beneath the amendment was a handwritten note.

If Marcus discovers the original agreement, activate the secondary transfer.

I looked at Richard.

"What is the secondary transfer?""

He didn't answer.

Derek suddenly reached for the binder.

Daniel stopped him.

"Don't touch that.""

Richard closed his eyes.

Then he looked at me.

"The secondary transfer was supposed to move the remaining assets into an account outside the United States.""

I stared at him.

"Whose account?""

Richard looked at Vanessa.

She began crying again.

Then he whispered:

"Your wife's.""

I felt my heart sink.

Vanessa shook her head.

"I never agreed to that.""

Derek laughed bitterly.

"You signed the amendment.""

She looked at him.

"Because you told me it was temporary!""

I looked at the document again.

There was one final signature at the bottom.

A signature I recognized.

Not mine.

Not Vanessa's.

It belonged to Richard.

But the date was three months earlier.

And beside it was a handwritten instruction:

*Execute before Marcus requests a full accounting.*

I looked up.

"Richard, what were you planning to do?""

He stared at the floor.

Then he said:

"I was trying to protect Ethan.""

Derek shook his head.

"Don't listen to him.""

Richard continued.

"But there's something else you need to know. The original life insurance policy was canceled six weeks ago.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

Richard swallowed.

"Because a new policy was issued.""

I felt the room go cold.

"Under whose name?""

Richard looked directly at me.

"Vanessa's.""

I turned toward my wife.

She was crying uncontrollably.

And suddenly, I understood that the final chapter of this story wasn't going to be about what Vanessa had done to me.

It was going to be about what she had finally decided to do to the people who had helped her destroy our marriage.

Because she reached into her handbag, pulled out a small flash drive, and placed it in front of me.

"Marcus," she whispered, "this is everything Derek thought I would never find.""

She looked toward Derek.

"And it proves he lied to all of us.""

May you like

Derek's face went completely white.

For the first time since I had met him, he looked afraid.
