Chapter 9: The Man Outside the Hospital
I read Claire's message twice before calling her.
She answered on the first ring.
“Who was waiting outside the hospital?”” I demanded.
“I was afraid you'd ask me that.””
“Claire, I have spent two days discovering that everyone I trusted knew something about my daughter that I didn't. I'm done waiting for the right moment.””
“I understand.””
“Then tell me.””
She exhaled shakily.
“Vanessa's father.””
I looked at Lily.
She had turned toward me, listening.
“Her father?”” I repeated.
“Yes. He didn't know where Vanessa had placed Lily at first. He found out about the adoption shortly before the hospital visit.””
“How?””
“I don't know exactly. Vanessa told me he'd hired someone to find out what had happened to the baby. He was furious that she'd refused to marry Lily's biological father, and he believed the adoption had humiliated the family.””
Lily frowned.
“Why would he care who I was adopted by?””
Claire hesitated.
“Because he wanted to control what happened to Vanessa. He believed that if he could force her to marry the baby's father, the family would be able to raise you themselves.””
I felt a chill move down my spine.
“Was Lily's biological father involved?””
“No. Vanessa had ended that relationship months before Lily was born. He had left her, and she didn't want him to have any part in her life.””
“Why didn't she tell us this?””
“Because she was ashamed of the situation, and because she was afraid her father would try to take Lily away if he learned where she was.””
I looked at my daughter.
Lily's face was pale.
“So my grandfather knew I existed.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
“And he didn't want me to be adopted?””
“He wanted you to remain within his family, but not necessarily because he wanted to raise you himself. He wanted to decide what happened to you.””
Lily stared at the phone.
For the first time, I could see her anger shifting into something else.
Fear.
“What happened outside the hospital?”” I asked.
Claire's voice dropped.
“Vanessa saw her father standing by the entrance. He told her that if she ever tried to bring you back into her life, he'd make sure she lost everything she'd worked to rebuild.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Did he threaten her?””
“Yes.””
“Did he threaten Lily?””
“He said he would challenge the adoption and expose Vanessa's past if she tried to contact you again.””
I looked at Lily.
She had begun to cry silently.
“Why didn't you tell me?”” I asked Claire.
“Because Emma believed the adoption was secure, and the agency told us that the information was confidential. Emma thought that if you and Lily were never drawn into Vanessa's family problems, you would be safer.””
“Safer from what? A man who didn't even know us?””
“From someone who had money, connections, and a history of controlling Vanessa. Emma didn't know how far he would go.””
I closed my eyes.
Another promise. Another decision made without me. Another secret that had been justified as protection.
But this time, I could understand the fear behind it.
It didn't make the silence right.
It made the silence human.
“Is he still alive?”” I asked.
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
“I haven't spoken to him in years. The last I heard, he was living in another state.””
“What's his name?””
Claire paused.
“Richard Reed.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Lily seemed to recognize it.
“Reed,” she whispered.
“That's Vanessa's maiden name.””
I nodded.
She stared out the window.
“Then my grandfather knew I was alive, and he never tried to meet me.””
Claire's voice softened.
“He wasn't the kind of person who wanted a relationship unless he could control it.””
Lily wiped her face.
“I don't want to know anything else about him.””
“You don't have to,” I told her.
“Does Vanessa know we're talking about him?””
“Yes,” Claire said.
“I told her last night that I couldn't keep this part of the story hidden anymore.””
“What did she say?””
Claire hesitated.
“She said she'd understand if Lily never wanted to see her again.””
Lily looked away.
I thanked Claire and ended the call.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then Lily asked, “Dad, do you think Vanessa was afraid of him when she smashed the music box?””
I considered the question.
“No. I think she was angry, and she hurt you because she didn't know what to do with that anger. Whatever happened with her father doesn't excuse what she did.””
Lily nodded.
“Good.””
She looked down at the broken music box.
“I don't want to spend the rest of my life feeling sorry for her.””
“You don't have to.””
“I can understand why she gave me away and still be angry that she lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“And I can know she loved me without pretending she was a good mother.””
I felt something loosen in my chest.
“Yes, sweetheart. You can.””
She leaned her head against the car window.
“Then I think I'm ready to read the letter.””
We arranged to meet Vanessa at Claire's house the following afternoon.
Vanessa arrived carrying a small cardboard box. She looked thinner than she had a few days earlier, and the shadows beneath her eyes suggested she hadn't slept.
She stopped when she saw Lily sitting at the kitchen table.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
Lily's face tightened.
“Please don't call me that yet.””
Vanessa nodded immediately.
“I'm sorry.””
She placed the box on the table.
“This is everything I kept from the day you were born. The letter I wrote to Emma, the copy of the music-box order, and the note I hoped you'd find someday.””
Lily looked at the box.
“You hid the receipt on purpose?””
Vanessa froze.
I leaned forward.
“Answer her.””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Lily stared at her.
“Why?””
Vanessa sat down.
“When I ordered the music box, I asked the shop not to include the receipt with the gift. But when I received it, I tucked the receipt beneath the removable base.””
“Because you wanted me to find it?””
“Partly.””
“Partly?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“I wanted you to know that someone had chosen that gift for you. I wanted you to have proof that your birth mother had thought about you, even if you never learned my name.””
Lily's voice grew sharper.
“Then why hide your name?””
“Because I wanted to be found without having to be the one to come back.””
The confession hung in the air.
Vanessa looked down at her hands.
“I know how cowardly that sounds.””
“It sounds like you wanted me to do the hard part for you.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
I stared at my wife.
For the first time, she wasn't trying to make herself look noble. She wasn't claiming that everything she'd done was for Lily's benefit.
She was admitting that some of her choices had been selfish.
And that honesty, however painful, mattered.
“Why did you smash it?”” Lily asked.
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“Because I hated that the box was the one thing you trusted more than me. I hated that you could hear the song and feel close to a woman you didn't know, while I stood beside you and couldn't tell you who I was.””
Lily shook her head.
“You could have told me.””
“Yes.””
“You could have waited until I was ready.””
“Yes.””
“You could have asked Dad for help.””
Vanessa began to cry.
“Yes.””
Lily looked at her for a long time.
Then she opened the box.
Inside lay a folded letter, a hospital bracelet, and a tiny yellow blanket that had faded almost to white.
Lily lifted the bracelet first.
Her name was written on it in blue ink.
*Baby Lily Reed.*
She touched the words with one finger.
Then she unfolded the letter.
Vanessa watched her anxiously, but said nothing.
Lily began reading aloud.
Dear Emma,
I am writing this because I don't know how else to explain what happened today.
When I saw Lily in your arms, I realized that I had never been as afraid of losing her as I was of failing her.
I wanted to take her home. I wanted to keep her, hold her through the night, and wake up every morning knowing she was mine.
But I watched you hold her, and I saw the way you looked at her. I saw that you were already her mother.
Lily's voice faltered.
She continued reading.
I know that giving her to you doesn't make the grief disappear. I know that I will remember her birthdays, her first day of school, and every milestone I will never see.
But I need you to understand that I did not choose you because I loved her less.
I chose you because I loved her enough to admit that love alone was not going to be enough.
Tears rolled down Lily's face.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Lily kept reading.
Please tell Michael that I chose your family because I believed he would protect her. Please tell him that if I ever come back, it will only be because Lily wants to know me.
And please, if she ever asks whether I wanted her, tell her that I did.
The letter ended with Vanessa's signature.
Lily placed it on the table.
For a long time, she didn't look at anyone.
Then she asked, “Did Mom ever answer this?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Lily turned toward me.
“Dad?””
I looked at the papers in front of us.
There was another page beneath the letter, folded in half.
It was in Emma's handwriting.
Vanessa reached for it, then stopped herself.
“I've never seen that before.””
I unfolded the page.
The first line made my chest tighten.
Vanessa, I believe you love Lily. But Michael has a right to know the truth, and Lily deserves the chance to choose what her future looks like.
I read the next sentence.
I will tell him when the time is right, and I will never allow either of you to make Lily feel responsible for the choices we adults have made.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying openly now.
Lily took the letter from my hand and read the final paragraph.
If you ever find yourself standing in front of her again, remember that you are not entitled to her forgiveness. You are only entitled to the chance to tell her the truth and let her decide.
Lily folded the letter.
Then she stood.
Vanessa rose instinctively, but Lily lifted a hand.
“Please don't.””
Vanessa stopped.
“I won't,” she whispered.
Lily looked at her for a long time.
“I believe you loved me when I was a baby.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“And I believe you loved me while I was growing up, even when you couldn't tell me who you were.””
Vanessa nodded through her tears.
“But love isn't the same as being a mother. And it doesn't erase what you did.””
“I understand.””
“No,” Lily said quietly.
“I don't think you do. But maybe you will someday.””
She picked up the music box.
“I need time. I don't know how much. I don't know whether I'll ever be ready to call you Mom.””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“You don't have to call me anything you're not comfortable with.””
Lily nodded.
Then she looked at me.
“Can we go home?””
I stood.
“Of course.””
As we reached the door, Vanessa called after us.
“Lily?””
My daughter stopped but didn't turn around.
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“There is one more thing I haven't told you. I found out recently that my father has been looking for you.””
Lily went still.
I turned slowly.
“What do you mean?””
Vanessa gripped the back of the chair.
“He contacted me last month. He knows you're sixteen, and he knows where you live.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“Why?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Because he's dying, and he wants to meet his granddaughter before he dies.””
Lily stared at her.
May you like
Then Vanessa said the words that changed the entire meaning of the secrets we'd uncovered.
“He doesn't want to apologize, Lily. He wants you to sign something.””
