Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Aaliyah stared at the name at the bottom of the page until the letters blurred.

*Marcus Carter.*

Her father's name.

His signature.

Her accusation.

None of it made sense.

“Dad,” she whispered, “why would you sign this?””

Marcus didn't answer.

He was staring at the document as if it were written in another language.

Dana stood beside him, silent.

Brianna had stopped breathing normally.

Tasha looked like she wanted to disappear.

Aaliyah reached for the paper.

Marcus handed it over.

The page trembled between her fingers.

At the top was a formal complaint filed six months earlier with the university's academic integrity office.

It accused Aaliyah of receiving unauthorized assistance on a major research project.

The complaint claimed she had used confidential material obtained through her father's company.

It claimed she had asked Marcus to intervene with a professor.

It claimed her final grade should be investigated.

And beneath the accusations was a typed statement:

*I, Marcus Carter, confirm that I am aware of my daughter's academic misconduct and believe the university should investigate.*

Aaliyah looked up.

“My father would never write this.””

Marcus's voice was quiet.

“No.””

She turned toward Dana.

“Then why is his name on it?””

Dana took the page back.

“We don't know yet.””

“You said this was submitted six months ago.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“We couldn't.””

“Why?””

“Because the university's investigation was confidential.””

Aaliyah's eyes narrowed.

“What investigation?””

Dana glanced at Marcus.

“The complaint was dismissed.””

Aaliyah blinked.

“Dismissed?””

“Yes. Your professor provided evidence that your project was independently completed.””

Aaliyah felt her knees weaken.

“So someone accused me of cheating, and I didn't even know?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Baby, look at me.””

She did.

His face was pale.

“I didn't file this.””

“I know.””

“I swear to you.””

“I know.””

Aaliyah looked down again.

“Then somebody forged your signature.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“And used my company.””

Tasha suddenly spoke.

“There were other documents.””

Everyone turned.

Brianna whispered, “Tasha, stop.””

“No.””

Tasha shook her head.

“I can't keep doing this.””

Brianna grabbed her wrist.

“Don't.””

Tasha pulled free.

“You already went too far.””

Marcus's voice became dangerously calm.

“Tasha.””

She looked at him.

“Tell me everything.””

Tasha swallowed.

“I don't know everything.””

“Tell me what you know.””

She glanced at Brianna.

Then at Aaliyah.

“Brianna told me somebody was trying to get Aaliyah kicked out of the program.””

Aaliyah's stomach dropped.

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“You do.””

“I swear, I don't.””

Brianna shook her head.

“Tasha, please.””

“No.””

Tasha's eyes filled with tears.

“You said it wasn't supposed to hurt her.””

Brianna's voice cracked.

“It wasn't.””

Aaliyah stepped toward them.

“What wasn't supposed to hurt me?””

Nobody answered.

“Brianna.””

Brianna finally looked at her.

“I was trying to get you to stop.””

“Stop what?””

“Everything.””

Aaliyah laughed once, bitterly.

“That's not an answer.””

Brianna wiped her cheek.

“You always had everything together.””

Aaliyah stared at her.

“What?””

“Your grades. Your internships. Your scholarships. Your father.””

“My father?””

“Yes.””

Brianna's voice became sharper.

“You had someone powerful standing behind you.””

“My father didn't do my work.””

“I know.””

“Then what are you saying?””

“I’m saying people noticed.””

Aaliyah shook her head.

“You think having a father who worked hard means I didn't?””

“I think you don't understand what it's like to fight for something and watch somebody else get it because of who they are.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Careful.””

Brianna looked at him.

“I wasn't talking about you.””

“You were talking about my daughter.””

“And you proved my point.””

Marcus's eyes hardened.

“How?””

“Because you're here.””

Silence.

Brianna pointed toward him.

“You walk into a courtyard and everyone stops talking.””

Marcus didn't move.

“You have money. Connections. A company. People listen when you speak.””

Brianna's voice shook.

“I wanted one thing that wasn't already yours.””

Aaliyah whispered, “So you tried to take mine?””

Brianna looked at her.

“I didn't know how else to compete.””

“You forged documents.””

“I didn't forge them.””

Marcus immediately asked, “Then who did?””

Brianna went silent.

Aaliyah noticed.

“You know.””

“No.””

“You know who did this.””

“I know someone who wanted you out.””

“Who?””

Brianna looked toward the university buildings.

Then she whispered a name.

“Professor Reed.””

Aaliyah froze.

“Dr. Reed?””

Her research adviser.

The professor who had supervised her final project.

The professor who had recommended her for an honors distinction.

“That makes no sense.””

Brianna shook her head.

“He wasn't trying to help me.””

“Then why?””

“I don't know.””

Marcus looked at Dana.

“Did you investigate him?””

“We investigated the complaint.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Dana's expression changed.

“No.””

“Then we start now.””

Aaliyah touched Marcus's arm.

“Wait.””

He looked down.

“I need to know why.””

“I know.””

“And I need to know why someone would use your name.””

Marcus nodded.

“You're right.””

He handed the document to Dana.

“Take copies.””

Dana did.

Then Marcus turned toward Brianna.

“And you.””

Brianna looked at him.

“If you know anything else, tell us now.””

She hesitated.

“There was a folder.””

“What folder?””

“Professor Reed gave it to me.””

Aaliyah's heart raced.

“What was in it?””

“Copies of your grades. Emails. Financial records.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“Financial records?””

Brianna nodded.

“He said he had proof that your scholarships were connected to donations from my company.””

Aaliyah stared at her.

“That isn't true.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“Because I checked.””

Aaliyah frowned.

“You checked?””

Brianna nodded.

“I found the scholarship foundation's records.””

“And?””

“There was no connection.””

Aaliyah exhaled.

“Then why didn't you tell anyone?””

Brianna looked ashamed.

“Because by then I had already sent the first email.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“You sent it?””

Brianna nodded.

“The email about Aaliyah.””

Aaliyah's face fell.

“You said you didn't know what would happen.””

“I didn't.””

“But you sent it.””

“Yes.””

“And then what?””

Brianna looked toward Tasha.

Tasha whispered, “Tell her.””

Brianna closed her eyes.

“Professor Reed told me if the complaint was successful, you would lose your honors distinction.””

Aaliyah stared.

“Why would he care?””

“I don't know.””

“Where's the folder now?””

Brianna hesitated.

Then her phone buzzed.

Everyone looked down.

Brianna pulled it out.

Her face went white.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

*You were told not to talk.*

Another message followed.

*Now they know.*

Brianna's hand began to shake.

Aaliyah stepped closer.

“Who is that?””

Brianna didn't answer.

Marcus held out his hand.

“Give me the phone.””

She did.

He read the messages.

Then another arrived.

*If you show them the folder, your family will regret it.*

Marcus looked up.

“Where is the folder?””

Brianna's eyes filled with tears.

“At my apartment.””

“Then we're going.””

“No.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he knows where I live.””

Aaliyah's pulse quickened.

“Who does?””

Brianna looked at her.

“I don't know his name.””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“But you've seen him.””

Brianna nodded.

“Once.””

“Where?””

“Outside the library.””

“What did he say?””

Brianna swallowed.

“He said…”

Her phone buzzed again.

This time, there was a photograph.

Brianna opened it.

Aaliyah leaned over her shoulder.

It was a picture of Aaliyah.

Taken from across the university courtyard.

Taken that morning.

Taken while Aaliyah stood alone, waiting for her father.

Aaliyah stopped breathing.

The caption beneath the photograph contained only four words:

*I see you, Aaliyah.*

Marcus took the phone from Brianna.

His face became completely still.

Then he looked toward the campus entrance.

“We're not going to Brianna's apartment.””

Aaliyah looked at him.

“Why?””

Marcus slipped the phone into his pocket.

“Because whoever sent this wants us to leave campus.””

He looked directly at Dana.

“Call security.””

May you like

Then the courtyard lights flickered.

And somewhere behind the graduation backdrop, a door slammed shut.
