Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Wedding

Eleanor read the message three times.

The attachment contained a photograph of a document.

At the top was the name of a luxury property company. Beneath it were several financial transactions, a list of outstanding debts, and a signature that looked unmistakably like Vanessa's.

But one line caught Eleanor's attention.

*Beneficiary: Charles Whitmore.*

She immediately called the wedding planner.

“Margaret, what am I looking at?””

Margaret sounded frightened.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I wasn't sure whether I should send that to you.””

“Where did you get it?””

“Vanessa left a folder in the bridal suite. I was organizing the final paperwork when I noticed the documents. I recognized Charles's name.””

Eleanor sat down.

“Tell me exactly what you found.””

Margaret took a breath.

“Vanessa has been telling people that Charles is going to give her control of several family assets after the wedding. She also asked me to prepare a separate announcement about the family trust.””

Eleanor frowned.

“What family trust?””

“Apparently, she's expecting a transfer of ownership shortly after the ceremony.””

Eleanor looked toward the brown envelope on the desk.

“Did she say why?””

Margaret hesitated.

“She said it was part of the marriage arrangement.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

There was no marriage arrangement.

At least, not one Charles had ever discussed with her.

“Margaret, don't confront her. Don't tell her you've contacted me.””

“I won't.””

“Send me everything you have.””

After the call ended, Eleanor remained seated.

She had suspected Vanessa was interested in money.

But suspicion was not proof.

She needed to understand what was happening before she did anything that might damage her son's future.

She called the family attorney, David Bennett.

David had represented Richard and Eleanor for almost thirty years.

“David, I need you to review something confidentially.””

“Of course. What's happened?””

“It's about Charles's wedding.””

There was a pause.

“Is Vanessa involved?””

Eleanor's fingers tightened around the phone.

“You know something?””

“Not enough to make an accusation. But I received an unusual inquiry from a law firm in Manhattan last week. They requested information about the Whitmore family trust.””

“Who made the inquiry?””

“Someone claiming to represent Vanessa Reed.””

Eleanor stood.

“Did you give them anything?””

“Absolutely not. The trust is private, and Charles has no authority to transfer assets that don't belong to him.””

Eleanor walked to the window.

“David, I want you to investigate this quietly.””

“I'll start immediately.””

“And David?””

“Yes?””

“Don't tell Charles yet.””

“Eleanor, he deserves to know.””

“I know. But I want facts, not suspicions.””

The next morning, Eleanor drove into town.

She wore a simple navy coat and carried the brown envelope.

At the Whitmore estate office, she met David in his private conference room.

He had arranged several documents across the table.

“There's something you should see.””

He opened a file.

“Vanessa has contacted three separate financial institutions over the last two months. In each case, she claimed she was acting on behalf of the future Whitmore household.””

Eleanor frowned.

“Did she use Charles's name?””

“Yes.””

“Did he authorize it?””

“According to Charles, no.””

David slid another document toward her.

“This is more concerning.””

Eleanor read it.

It was a draft agreement involving a substantial loan secured against property that belonged to the family trust.

The document listed Charles as a co-signer.

But his signature looked wrong.

Eleanor leaned closer.

“That's not his handwriting.””

“I agree. We've asked a forensic document examiner to review it.””

“Can you stop the transaction?””

“It hasn't been approved. But if Vanessa has been circulating forged documents, we need to act.””

Eleanor slowly removed her glasses.

“David, I don't want to destroy a young woman's life because she made a mistake.””

David looked at her.

“Eleanor, this isn't about destroying anyone. It's about protecting your family.””

She stared at the document.

Then she remembered Richard's final words.

Protect our son before it's too late.

“Find out everything,” she said.

Meanwhile, Vanessa was sitting in a beauty salon with her best friend, Madison.

Madison was scrolling through wedding photographs on her phone.

“Your dress is gorgeous,” she said.

“But are you seriously going through with this?””

Vanessa glanced at her reflection.

“Why wouldn't I?””

“Because you barely seem happy.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Madison, do you know how many women would kill to marry a man like Charles?””

“He's handsome. I'll give you that.””

“His family owns half the land around Whitmore County. His mother has money, property, investments. And Charles is the only child.””

Madison lowered her phone.

“So?””

“So, once we're married, everything changes.””

Madison studied her.

“Are you marrying him because you love him?””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Love is important, obviously. But love doesn't pay for a penthouse or a private jet.””

“Vanessa.””

“What? You think people marry for love alone? Grow up.””

Madison looked uncomfortable.

Vanessa picked up her phone.

“Besides, his mother is practically begging to be accepted. She's already paid for a huge portion of the wedding.””

“That's nice of her.””

“It's convenient.””

Vanessa smiled at her reflection.

“After the wedding, I'll convince Charles to move his financial interests into a company we control. His mother won't have a say.””

Madison slowly put down her phone.

“Does Charles know about this?””

“Not yet.””

“Then maybe you shouldn't be doing it.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Don't start preaching to me.””

That afternoon, Charles visited his mother's farmhouse.

Eleanor was in the kitchen, preparing tea.

“Mom?””

She turned and smiled.

“Hello, sweetheart.””

Charles kissed her cheek.

“Have you been busy?””

“Just a little gardening.””

He sat at the table.

“Vanessa said you were acting strangely at the last fitting.””

Eleanor paused.

“Did she?””

“She thinks you don't approve of her.””

Eleanor placed a cup in front of him.

“Charles, do you?””

He frowned.

“Do I what?””

“Approve of the woman you're marrying?””

He laughed.

“Of course I do.””

Eleanor sat across from him.

“Then tell me what you love about her.””

Charles looked surprised.

“That's a strange question.””

“I'm your mother. I'm allowed to ask strange questions.””

He smiled.

“She makes me laugh. She's ambitious. She has her own business. She knows what she wants.””

“And how does she treat you when you disagree?””

Charles looked down at his tea.

“Why are you asking all this?””

“Because marriage is more than beautiful photographs and expensive celebrations.””

He reached across the table and took her hand.

“Mom, I know you're worried. But Vanessa is the woman I chose.””

Eleanor nodded.

“I hope she's the right one.””

“She is.””

For a moment, she wanted to show him the documents.

But she remembered the uncertainty.

She needed the complete truth.

So she asked one more question.

“Has Vanessa ever asked you to sign anything related to your inheritance?””

Charles frowned.

“My inheritance?””

“Property documents. Trust papers. Financial agreements.””

“No. Why?””

Eleanor held his gaze.

“Just making sure.””

Charles leaned back.

“Mom, you know I don't care about the money.””

“I know.””

“And neither does Vanessa.””

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

She wished she could believe him.

Two days before the wedding, David called.

“Eleanor, we have the examination results.””

She stood in the middle of the orchard, holding a basket of apples.

“Go ahead.””

“The signature on the loan document is forged.””

Eleanor's heart sank.

“Are you certain?””

“Yes. The examiner compared it with Charles's verified signatures.””

“What about the trust inquiry?””

“We traced it to a private legal consultant hired by Vanessa. The consultant requested information about the estate's assets and succession arrangements.””

Eleanor looked toward the old barn.

“Why?””

David's voice became quieter.

“There's something else. Vanessa has been telling creditors that after the wedding, she will have access to the Whitmore family estate.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“How much debt does she have?””

“Approximately eight hundred thousand dollars, excluding disputed obligations.””

The basket slipped slightly in Eleanor's hands.

Eight hundred thousand.

“Does Charles know?””

“Not as far as we can determine.””

Eleanor took a long breath.

“Send me the report.””

“Eleanor, I strongly recommend that we inform Charles before the ceremony.””

She looked toward the house.

Her son's wedding photograph sat on the mantel inside.

“Not yet,” she whispered.

“Why are you waiting?””

“Because I want him to hear the truth in a way that leaves no room for Vanessa to deny it.””

David sighed.

“Then we need to be careful.””

“I know.””

On the morning of the wedding, Eleanor arrived at the church early.

Sunlight poured through the tall stained-glass windows. White roses lined the aisle, and a magnificent floral arch stood behind the altar.

She wore her lilac dress, a pearl necklace Richard had given her on their twentieth anniversary, and a small silver bracelet.

Margaret, the wedding planner, approached.

“Mrs. Whitmore.””

“Good morning.””

“Did you receive everything?””

“Yes.””

Margaret glanced toward the bridal suite.

“There's another problem.””

Eleanor turned.

“What now?””

“Vanessa has asked the photographer not to include you in the main family portraits.””

Eleanor looked at her.

“Did she give a reason?””

“She said she wanted a more polished image.””

For a moment, Eleanor said nothing.

Then she smiled faintly.

“That's all right, Margaret.””

But Margaret looked furious.

“It's not all right.””

Eleanor touched her arm.

“Please. Today is supposed to be about Charles.””

Margaret lowered her voice.

“There's something else. Vanessa has been telling the guests that you are financially dependent on Charles.””

Eleanor's expression changed.

“She's been saying what?””

“That your farmhouse is old, that you struggle to maintain it, and that Charles has been supporting you.””

Eleanor stared at the planner.

She had never asked Charles for a single dollar.

Not once.

Instead, she had spent years quietly helping him build his life.

But she didn't argue.

She simply walked toward the front pew and sat down.

At that moment, Charles entered the church.

He looked handsome in his black tuxedo.

When he saw his mother, he smiled.

“Mom.””

Eleanor stood.

“You look wonderful, sweetheart.””

He hugged her.

“Thank you for coming early.””

“Wouldn't miss it.””

Charles glanced toward the entrance.

“Vanessa is nervous.””

“I'm sure.””

He took her hands.

“Whatever happens today, I want you to know that you're still the most important woman in my life.””

Eleanor felt tears sting her eyes.

“Oh, Charles.””

He kissed her forehead.

Then his phone buzzed.

He looked down.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Charles, before you marry Vanessa, ask her what happened to the money she borrowed from her former fiancé.

Charles frowned.

“Mom, do you know anyone named Daniel Cross?””

Eleanor slowly released his hands.

And before she could answer, the church doors opened.

Vanessa appeared at the entrance in her magnificent white gown.

Behind her, Madison was holding a bouquet and looking terrified.
