Chapter 8: The Woman Who Stole Four Million Dollars

Margaret Collins had worked for the Whitmore family for twenty-two years.

She had managed Richard's accounts, prepared the company's annual reports, and helped Eleanor understand complicated financial statements.

When Richard died, Margaret had been the person who sat beside Eleanor in the hospital waiting room.

She had brought her coffee.

She had arranged the funeral payments.

She had even helped Charles organize his father's business affairs.

And now, according to the recording, she had helped Victor steal four million dollars.

Eleanor couldn't believe it.

“No,” she whispered.

David placed a hand on the table.

“Eleanor, I understand this is difficult.””

“Margaret was my friend.””

Charles looked at his mother.

“Mom, she stole from us.””

“She was there when your father died.””

“Exactly.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“She held my hand at his funeral.””

Charles looked away.

The betrayal seemed almost worse than Victor's crime.

Victor had always been a businessman.

But Margaret had been part of their family.

Detective Laura Bennett immediately requested a warrant to search Margaret's properties.

Her office had been closed for three days.

Her apartment was empty.

Her car had been abandoned near the train station.

There was no sign of her.

But investigators found something in her office.

A locked drawer containing copies of the original insurance documents.

Inside was a handwritten ledger.

Every transfer was listed.

Every account number.

Every payment.

At the bottom of the final page was a note:

Victor promised I would receive ten percent. He has paid nothing.

Charles read the sentence twice.

“So she helped him steal four million dollars because she wanted a commission?””

David shook his head.

“People who become involved in financial fraud often tell themselves they're only borrowing money. Then they spend years trying to hide the evidence.””

Eleanor looked at the ledger.

“Did Margaret know Richard was going to be hurt?””

Nobody answered.

The detective closed the folder.

“We'll find out.””

Later that afternoon, Charles received an unexpected call.

It was Vanessa.

He nearly rejected it.

Then he remembered the recording.

He answered.

“What do you want?””

Vanessa sounded exhausted.

“Charles, please don't hang up.””

“You have thirty seconds.””

“I know where my father is.””

Charles stood.

“Where?””

“He's staying at a private property outside the city. He's planning to leave the country.””

“Tell the police.””

“I will, but I need to see you first.””

“Why?””

“Because I found something about Margaret.””

Charles looked at David.

“What about her?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“My father has been paying her for years. But she wasn't just helping him with the insurance money.””

“What else?””

“She helped him obtain the original property documents.””

Charles felt his stomach tighten.

“Why would he need those if he never owned the estate?””

“Because the documents were altered. My father planned to use them to claim ownership of the industrial land.””

Charles looked at Eleanor.

She was listening carefully.

“Where are you?”” he asked.

“I'm at the old hotel near the courthouse.””

“Don't move. I'm calling the police.””

“Charles, please.””

He lowered his voice.

“If you want to help, tell the truth to the investigators.””

“I will.””

“And Vanessa?””

“Yes?””

“Don't expect me to forgive you.””

The call ended.

An hour later, Charles and Detective Bennett met Vanessa in a private conference room at the police station.

She looked different.

Her expensive clothes had been replaced by a plain sweater and jeans.

Her eyes were swollen.

When Charles entered, she stood.

“Thank you for coming.””

“Don't thank me.””

She sat down.

Detective Bennett placed a recorder on the table.

“This conversation is being recorded. You may request legal representation at any time.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I understand.””

Charles folded his arms.

“Tell us about Margaret.””

Vanessa took a breath.

“My father started using her shortly after Richard's death. She had access to the insurance documents and the company accounts. She helped him transfer the money.””

“Did she know the money was stolen?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Vanessa looked down.

“She signed the instructions herself.””

The detective leaned forward.

“Do you have evidence?””

Vanessa removed a small notebook from her handbag.

“My father kept a list of payments. He used it to remind people who owed him favors.””

She opened it.

Margaret's name appeared several times.

Beside it were dates and amounts.

The total exceeded four hundred thousand dollars.

Charles stared at the notebook.

“Where did you get this?””

“From my father's office.””

“Why did you take it?””

“Because he threatened me.””

She looked up.

“He told me that if I ever spoke about the accident, he would make sure I was charged as an accomplice.””

Charles's expression hardened.

“Were you?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I was involved in the financial fraud. I knew about the forged documents. I helped prepare some of them.””

The detective stopped writing.

“You're admitting participation?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Charles felt his anger rise.

“Then why should we believe anything else you say?””

She looked directly at him.

“Because I'm not asking you to believe me. I'm giving you evidence.””

She slid another document across the table.

It was a photograph of a handwritten note.

Victor's handwriting.

Margaret must obtain the original deed before the estate audit. Without it, the claim cannot proceed.

Beneath it was another sentence.

The daughter must marry Charles before he discovers the insurance transfer.

Charles went completely still.

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn't know about that note until yesterday.””

Charles looked at her.

“You knew the marriage was part of your father's plan.””

“Yes.””

“And you still walked down the aisle.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I thought I could make it work. I thought if I married you, I could convince my father to leave the family alone.””

Charles stared at her.

“You wanted to marry me to control the situation?””

“I wanted to believe I could change things.””

“You don't get to turn betrayal into love just because you regret it.””

Vanessa lowered her hands.

“I know.””

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she whispered:

“There's something else about your father.””

Charles looked at her.

“What?””

“My father told me that Richard had discovered Margaret was working with him before the accident.””

The detective immediately leaned forward.

“Are you certain?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He said Richard was planning to confront her.””

Charles looked at David.

David's face had gone pale.

“Then Margaret may have had a reason to make sure Richard never reached the police.””

That evening, the police located Margaret.

She was hiding in a rented house outside the city.

When officers entered, they found her packing two suitcases.

She didn't resist arrest.

She simply looked at the officers and said:

“I wondered how long it would take.””

At the station, Margaret initially refused to answer questions.

But when investigators presented the recording, the financial ledger, and Vanessa's notebook, her confidence disappeared.

Detective Bennett placed the documents on the table.

“Mrs. Collins, we have evidence connecting you to the fraudulent transfer of four million dollars.””

Margaret stared at the papers.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain.””

She began to cry.

“Victor told me it was temporary.””

“Four million dollars?””

“He said Richard owed him money.””

“Did you know the agreement was fraudulent?””

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Did you know the signature on the insurance transfer was forged?””

“Yes.””

The detective leaned forward.

“Did you know Richard was planning to expose the fraud?””

Margaret looked up.

“Yes.””

“Did you tell Victor?””

She began shaking.

“Yes.””

The detective paused.

“Did you know Victor planned to confront Richard on the night of the accident?””

Margaret covered her mouth.

“I didn't know he would hit him.””

“But you knew there was a confrontation?””

She nodded.

“Victor called me that evening. He said Richard had become a problem.””

“What did you do?””

“I told him where Richard was going.””

The room fell silent.

The detective stared at her.

“You gave him Richard's location?””

Margaret started crying harder.

“I didn't think he'd do something like that.””

“Mrs. Collins, did you call emergency services after the collision?””

She shook her head.

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Did you help Victor remove the original financial records?””

Margaret nodded.

The detective closed the folder.

“Then you need to tell us exactly what happened.””

Margaret stared at the table for a long time.

Finally, she spoke.

“Victor wasn't supposed to kill Richard. But he knew the collision might be serious.””

She wiped her face.

“And after it happened, he called me.””

“What did he say?””

Margaret's voice dropped to a whisper.

“He said Richard was still alive. He said someone had to make sure the insurance claim went through before the police discovered the financial fraud.””

Detective Bennett stared at her.

“Who made sure the insurance claim went through?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I did.””

The confession was delivered to Eleanor and Charles the following morning.

Eleanor sat in Richard's study, staring at the old photograph on the mantel.

Her husband had trusted Margaret.

He had trusted Victor.

And both had betrayed him.

Charles entered quietly.

“Mom?””

She looked up.

“They arrested her?””

“Yes.””

“Did she confess?””

He nodded.

Eleanor pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“Your father knew something was wrong. He tried to protect us.””

Charles sat beside her.

“It's over now.””

She shook her head.

“No, sweetheart. Not yet.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because we still don't know who actually caused your father's death.””

Charles frowned.

“Victor drove into his car.””

“Yes. But Margaret knew where your father was going. She knew about the confrontation. And she helped Victor afterward.””

Charles took her hand.

“Mom, the police will establish what happened.””

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“I need to know whether Richard suffered because someone decided his life was worth less than four million dollars.””

Charles had no answer.

Then David entered.

He carried a large envelope.

“We've received the preliminary forensic results from the storage unit.””

Charles stood.

“What did they find?””

David opened the envelope.

“Richard's recorder contained a hidden audio track. It wasn't included in the original file list.””

Eleanor frowned.

“Another recording?””

“Yes.””

David placed a printed transcript on the desk.

“Apparently, your father recorded a final conversation with Victor in the parking area outside the company headquarters. It took place less than an hour before the accident.””

Charles began reading.

Then he stopped.

His face changed.

“Mom.””

“What?””

He handed her the transcript.

At the bottom, Richard's voice was recorded saying:

Victor, I know you didn't act alone. I know who gave you access to my accounts.

Eleanor looked at the next line.

It wasn't Victor's reply.

It was a woman's voice.

A familiar woman's voice.

Richard, please. You don't have to destroy everything.

Eleanor felt her blood run cold.

The transcript identified the speaker.

*Helen Whitmore.*

Richard's younger sister.

Charles slowly looked at his mother.

“My aunt?””

David nodded.

“According to the recording, she was present during the confrontation.””

Eleanor stood.

“Helen told me she was out of the country that week.””

David lowered his voice.

“She wasn't.””

Charles stared at the transcript.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

It was from an unknown number.

Your mother knows why Helen was there. Ask her what happened to the second will.

Charles looked at Eleanor.

“Mom, what second will?””

Eleanor's lips parted.

For seven years, she had believed Richard left only one will.

But now she remembered something.

A sealed document.

May you like

A second signature.

And a conversation she had promised never to reveal.
