Chapter 9: The Second Will and the Family's Darkest Secret

Eleanor didn't answer immediately.

Charles waited.

“Mom?””

She walked toward the desk and opened the bottom drawer.

Inside was a small leather folder.

She removed it and placed it on the table.

“Your father made two wills.””

Charles stared at her.

“Why didn't I know?””

“Because the second one was never meant to replace the first unless certain conditions were met.””

David leaned forward.

“What conditions?””

Eleanor opened the folder.

“Richard created it shortly before his death. He was concerned that someone inside the family was helping Victor.””

Charles looked at the document.

“Who?””

Eleanor turned the page.

The second will contained a list of people who would lose access to the family estate if evidence of financial fraud emerged.

One name had been underlined.

Helen Whitmore.

Charles frowned.

“Why would Dad include Aunt Helen?””

Eleanor sat down.

“Because she had been asking him for money.””

“How much?””

“Nearly two million dollars.””

David examined the document.

“Was the money a loan?””

“No. Richard told me he believed Helen was being pressured by Victor.””

Charles shook his head.

“Aunt Helen? She was always so close to Dad.””

“She was his younger sister,” Eleanor said.

“He trusted her.””

She looked down at the document.

“But in the months before his death, they had several arguments.””

“About what?””

“The family company. Helen believed she deserved part of the estate while Richard was alive.””

Charles paced across the room.

“She wanted money?””

“She wanted control.””

David studied the will.

“Eleanor, this document could be extremely important. Do you know where the original is?””

Eleanor pointed toward the leather folder.

“This is the original.””

David carefully examined the signatures.

“Then we need to verify its authenticity.””

Charles looked at his mother.

“Why did you hide it?””

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

“Because Richard asked me to protect you from a family dispute. He believed Helen might try to take the estate if she knew about the second will.””

“And you never told me?””

“I thought the matter had ended.””

Charles sat down.

“Mom, it never ended.””

The police contacted Helen Whitmore that afternoon.

She agreed to meet Detective Bennett at the family estate.

Helen arrived wearing a dark green coat and carrying a designer handbag.

She looked almost exactly as Charles remembered her.

Elegant.

Composed.

And entirely untroubled.

When she entered the study, she kissed Eleanor's cheek.

“Ellie. It's been too long.””

Eleanor didn't return the gesture.

“Helen.””

Helen glanced at Charles.

“What's all this about?””

Charles placed the second will on the table.

Helen's smile disappeared.

For several seconds, she stared at the document.

Then she laughed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Dad left it,” Charles replied.

Helen sat down.

“Richard was paranoid near the end. He didn't trust anyone.””

Eleanor looked directly at her.

“Apparently, he had a reason.””

Helen removed her gloves.

“Are we really going to discuss old family arguments?””

David placed the financial records beside the will.

“These aren't family arguments. They're financial documents.””

Helen looked at him.

“And who are you to question me?””

“David Bennett. I represented your brother.””

“I know who you are.””

Detective Bennett opened her notebook.

“Helen, we need to ask you about your relationship with Victor Reed.””

Helen's expression remained neutral.

“Professional acquaintance.””

“Did you provide him with access to Richard's accounts?””

“No.””

“Did you discuss the insurance policy with him?””

“No.””

“Were you present at the company headquarters on the night of Richard's accident?””

Helen looked toward Eleanor.

“Why are you asking me that?””

“Because we have a recording.””

Helen's face tightened.

“What recording?””

Detective Bennett played the audio.

Richard's voice.

Victor's voice.

Then Helen's.

Richard, please. You don't have to destroy everything.

Helen stared at the recorder.

When it stopped, she looked at Eleanor.

“You've been listening to private conversations?””

Eleanor's voice trembled.

“Did you know Victor was stealing from Richard?””

Helen sighed.

“Everyone knew Victor was difficult.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

Helen leaned back.

“Richard was always dramatic. He believed everyone was trying to take something from him.””

Charles stood.

“Did you tell Victor where Dad would be that night?””

Helen looked at him.

“No.””

Detective Bennett slid a printed telephone record across the table.

“This shows a call between your number and Victor's shortly before the accident.””

Helen didn't touch the paper.

“So?””

“The call lasted eleven minutes.””

Helen shrugged.

“I spoke to him about business.””

“What business?””

“I don't remember.””

Charles stared at her.

“You were talking to the man who destroyed my father's life.””

Helen's eyes narrowed.

“Don't speak to me like that.””

“Then tell us the truth.””

Helen turned toward Eleanor.

“Your husband wasn't innocent.””

Eleanor froze.

“What did you say?””

Helen folded her hands.

“Richard had been making decisions without consulting anyone. He controlled the company, the property, the money. He treated me like a child.””

“He was your brother.””

“And I was his family too!””

Helen's voice rose.

“I spent years working beside him. I helped build the business. But when he became successful, he decided everything belonged to him.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“Richard offered you a salary, a position, and a share of the profits.””

“I wanted ownership.””

Charles stepped closer.

“So you helped Victor steal from him?””

Helen stood.

“I didn't steal anything.””

Detective Bennett raised a hand.

“Please sit down.””

Helen remained standing.

Then she looked directly at Eleanor.

“You want to know why Richard made that second will? Because he knew I had evidence that could ruin him.””

Eleanor went pale.

“What evidence?””

Helen smiled bitterly.

“Your husband wasn't planning to expose Victor. He was planning to expose me.””

Charles looked at his mother.

“Mom?””

Helen reached into her handbag and removed a small photograph.

She placed it on the table.

It showed Richard standing beside a woman outside a hotel.

The woman was not Eleanor.

Charles picked it up.

“Who is she?””

Helen answered quietly.

“Her name is Claire Morgan. Richard had been secretly transferring money to her for years.””

Eleanor stared at the photograph.

“No.””

Helen continued.

“Richard wasn't the perfect husband you believed he was.””

Eleanor's hand trembled.

“Where did you get that?””

“From his private records.””

David stepped forward.

“Do you have proof of these transfers?””

Helen smiled.

“Of course.””

She removed a second document.

“This is why Richard wanted to change his will. He was afraid I would tell you.””

Eleanor slowly sat down.

For seven years, she had mourned her husband as the man who had built their family and protected them.

Now Helen was telling her there had been another woman.

Charles looked at his aunt.

“Even if that's true, it doesn't explain the forged documents or the insurance money.””

Helen's smile vanished.

“I never said it did.””

Detective Bennett leaned forward.

“Then explain your role in the accident.””

Helen looked at her.

“I wasn't there when Victor hit Richard's car.””

“Were you aware that Victor planned to confront him?””

Helen hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Yes.””

Charles felt his stomach tighten.

“Did you know he intended to hurt him?””

“No.””

“Did you tell him where Dad was?””

Helen lowered her eyes.

“I told him Richard was going to the old industrial road.””

The room fell silent.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Helen began crying.

“I didn't know what Victor would do.””

Charles stepped toward her.

“You knew he was angry. You knew Dad had evidence. You gave him his location.””

“I wanted Richard to stop interfering with my life!””

Charles stared at her.

“So you sent him into a confrontation with a man you knew was dangerous?””

Helen broke down.

“I never wanted him dead!””

Detective Bennett closed her notebook.

“That's enough for today.””

She motioned to the officers outside.

Helen looked at Eleanor.

“Ellie, please.””

Eleanor didn't move.

Helen whispered:

“Richard wasn't the only person who made mistakes.””

Eleanor finally spoke.

“But he was the one who died.””

After Helen was taken for further questioning, Charles sat with his mother in the garden.

The sky was turning dark.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Finally, Eleanor said:

“I don't know who your father was anymore.””

Charles looked at her.

“He was still your husband.””

“He lied to me.””

“Maybe.””

“He had another woman.””

“We don't know the full story.””

Eleanor looked toward the orchard.

“I spent forty years loving him.””

Charles took her hand.

“And he spent forty years loving you. One betrayal doesn't erase every good thing.””

She gave a sad smile.

“You sound like your father.””

Charles looked down.

“I wish I could ask him why.””

Eleanor leaned against his shoulder.

They sat together until the first stars appeared.

The next morning, Detective Bennett called.

“Mrs. Whitmore, we have an update.””

Eleanor immediately sat upright.

“What happened?””

“Helen has admitted that she provided Victor with information about Richard's movements.””

Charles, standing nearby, closed his eyes.

“Was she involved in the collision?””

“Not directly, according to her statement. But we're investigating whether she knowingly assisted Victor.””

“What about the second will?””

“We've confirmed the document is authentic. It also contains a handwritten addendum.””

Eleanor frowned.

“What addendum?””

“The final page names a beneficiary who would receive control of the estate if both you and Charles were unable to manage it.””

Eleanor looked at Charles.

“Who?””

The detective paused.

“Your husband's former business partner, Daniel Cross.””

Charles frowned.

“Vanessa's former fiancé?””

“Yes.””

Eleanor stared at the phone.

“Why would Richard leave anything to him?””

“We don't know yet. But the document suggests Richard had been communicating with Mr. Cross long before his death.””

Charles looked toward the desk.

“Dad knew Daniel?””

Apparently, he had.

And the implications were enormous.

That afternoon, David contacted Daniel Cross.

Daniel agreed to meet them at the farmhouse.

He arrived in a modest sedan, wearing a plain blue shirt and carrying a folder.

He was in his early thirties, with tired eyes and a serious expression.

When he entered the study, he looked at Eleanor.

“Mrs. Whitmore. I'm sorry for what happened to your family.””

Eleanor nodded.

“Thank you for coming.””

Charles shook his hand.

“You knew my father?””

Daniel nodded.

“We met several times. I worked for a financial consultancy that audited one of his development projects.””

“Why didn't I know?””

“Because your father asked me to keep our discussions confidential.””

Daniel opened his folder.

“Seven years ago, I discovered irregularities in the financial records of Victor Reed's company. I reported them to Richard.””

David leaned forward.

“And what happened?””

“Richard asked me to investigate further. I found evidence that Victor and Margaret were transferring money through several shell companies.””

Charles stared at him.

“So Dad was already investigating them.””

“Yes.””

Daniel removed another document.

“But I found something else.””

He placed a bank statement on the table.

It showed a transfer made three days before Richard's accident.

The recipient was a private account.

The account holder's name was:

*Claire Morgan.*

Eleanor stared at it.

Helen's photograph had shown Richard with Claire.

Charles looked at Daniel.

“Who is she?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Claire was not your father's mistress.””

Eleanor looked up sharply.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“She was an investigator working undercover for a financial crimes unit. Richard was secretly helping her build a case against Victor.””

Charles stared at the photograph.

“Then why did Dad transfer money to her?””

“Operational expenses. Evidence collection. Travel. He was trying to expose the entire network.””

Eleanor felt the weight in her chest begin to lift.

“Why didn't he tell me?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because he believed Victor was watching the family.””

Charles leaned forward.

“Then Helen's story was a lie.””

“Not entirely. She saw them together. But she misunderstood the relationship.””

Daniel opened another folder.

“And there's something else.””

He placed a final document in front of Charles.

It was an email Richard had sent him the day before the accident.

The subject line read:

*IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME.*

Charles began reading.

Daniel,

I have discovered that Victor has someone inside the family helping him. I believe the person is my sister.

I also suspect Margaret has been compromised.

There is one person I haven't been able to identify.

Someone who has been providing Victor with information about my son's private life.

Charles stopped.

His eyes moved to the final sentence.

I fear they have already approached Charles.

He looked up.

“Dad thought someone was watching me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Apparently.””

Charles felt a chill.

“Who?””

Daniel shook his head.

“We never found out.””

Then he removed a small photograph from his folder.

It showed Charles at a charity event seven years earlier.

Standing beside him was a woman.

Not Vanessa.

Not Madison.

A woman Eleanor recognized immediately.

The woman had been Richard's personal assistant.

And she had attended Charles's wedding.

Her name was *Rebecca Shaw*.

Charles stared at the photograph.

“Rebecca?””

Daniel nodded.

“She was the last person to speak with your father before he left the company that evening.””

Eleanor slowly stood.

“That's impossible. Rebecca resigned years ago.””

Daniel looked at her.

“She didn't resign.””

He placed another document on the table.

“She was fired the morning after Richard's accident.””

Charles looked at the date.

Then at the signature.

His father's final authorization.

And beneath it was a handwritten sentence.

Do not let Rebecca near my son.

Before anyone could speak, Charles's phone rang.

The caller ID showed Rebecca Shaw.

He answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

“Charles, I know you've found the second will.””

He froze.

“How do you know that?””

“Because I helped your father write it.””

Charles looked at Eleanor.

Rebecca continued.

“And if you want to know who really ordered the attack on Richard, you need to meet me tonight.””

“Why should I trust you?””

There was a long silence.

Then she said:

“Because the man who hit your father's car wasn't Victor Reed.””

Charles felt his blood run cold.

“What?””

Rebecca's final words were almost inaudible.

May you like

“Victor was driving the wrong vehicle that night.””

The call disconnected.
