Chapter 7: The Safe Behind the Wall

Three knocks sounded from the other side of the ballroom doors.

Nobody moved.

Isaiah stared at the handles.

The first knock had been soft.

The second had been deliberate.

The third had been loud enough to make several guests gasp.

Brielle grabbed his sleeve.

"Isaiah, don't open that.""

He looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

"Why?""

"I don't know who's out there.""

Camille stepped backward.

Her face had lost all color.

"I do.""

Isaiah looked at her.

"Who?""

Camille didn't answer.

Evelyn did.

"Your grandfather's lawyer.""

Isaiah frowned.

"He's dead.""

"No.""

The ballroom doors opened.

An older Black man stood in the doorway wearing a dark suit, silver tie, and expression that made the room feel colder.

Isaiah recognized him from the family photographs.

Daniel Whitmore.

The attorney.

He held a leather briefcase in one hand.

"Mr. Cole.""

Isaiah stared.

"You said you were on the phone.""

"I was.""

"How are you here?""

Daniel glanced around at the destroyed cake.

"Because I was downstairs.""

Isaiah's eyes narrowed.

"You knew what was happening.""

"I knew something was happening.""

Daniel walked inside and closed the doors.

He looked at Evelyn.

"Mrs. Cole.""

She nodded.

"You shouldn't have come.""

"I had no choice.""

Daniel placed the briefcase on an empty table.

"I found the original deed.""

Isaiah stepped toward him.

"You told me over the phone that it existed.""

"I told you we'd found it.""

"Where?""

Daniel opened the briefcase.

"Your grandfather's study.""

Camille shook her head.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel looked at her.

"You were looking in the wrong place.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means the safe was never behind the bookshelf.""

Camille stared.

"Then where?""

Daniel turned toward Isaiah.

"Your grandfather built a false wall behind the fireplace.""

Isaiah looked at Evelyn.

She slowly nodded.

"I knew.""

His voice tightened.

"You knew where the safe was?""

"I knew there was a wall.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because your grandfather told me never to.""

Isaiah laughed bitterly.

"Everyone in this family seems to have a promise they care about more than telling me the truth.""

Daniel opened the briefcase.

Inside were folders.

Photographs.

Bank statements.

A small brass key.

And a sealed envelope.

Isaiah pointed.

"What's that?""

"Something your grandfather left for you.""

"How long have you had it?""

"Since this morning.""

"Why didn't you send it to me?""

"Because it was marked to be delivered only after your wedding.""

Isaiah looked toward the ring on the cake table.

His wedding was already over.

Daniel nodded toward it.

"Apparently, the condition has been satisfied.""

Brielle whispered,

"What condition?""

Daniel looked at her.

"Your marriage had to occur.""

Brielle's face tightened.

"And?""

"Your grandfather anticipated that it might not survive the day.""

Isaiah stared at him.

"Why?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he removed a document from the briefcase.

"Because he knew someone would eventually come after the house.""

Brielle's eyes dropped.

Isaiah noticed.

He turned to her.

"Did you know?""

"No.""

"Did your mother know?""

Camille shook her head.

"Not about the condition.""

Daniel looked at Camille.

"Your daughter knew enough.""

Brielle's face hardened.

"Don't talk about me like I'm not standing here.""

Daniel remained calm.

"I am talking about you because your name appears in the records.""

Isaiah looked at the papers.

"What records?""

Daniel placed a bank statement on the table.

"Payments.""

Brielle stepped backward.

"No.""

Isaiah picked it up.

His eyes moved down the page.

The account belonged to a company he had never heard of.

But the payments were made to another company.

A consulting firm.

And the recipient's address was Brielle's apartment.

Isaiah looked up.

"What is this?""

Brielle's voice shook.

"I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

"My mother used my address.""

"For what?""

"Mail.""

"Mail containing what?""

"I don't know.""

Isaiah's eyes hardened.

"You knew about the house.""

"Yes.""

"You knew about the altered deed.""

"Yes.""

"You knew your mother was investigating my family.""

"Yes.""

"And you never told me.""

Brielle started crying.

"I was scared.""

Isaiah held up the statement.

"Was this your money?""

"No.""

"Did you receive any of it?""

"No.""

"Did you know these payments were being made?""

Brielle hesitated.

"Some of them.""

Isaiah closed his eyes.

That hesitation hurt more than the answer.

Daniel spoke quietly.

"There is more.""

He opened another folder.

A photograph slid onto the table.

It showed Brielle entering a bank.

Isaiah looked at the date.

Four months before their wedding.

"What were you doing there?""

Brielle wiped her face.

"My mother asked me to retrieve something.""

"What?""

"A safety deposit box.""

Isaiah stared.

"What was inside?""

"I don't know.""

"You opened it.""

"No.""

"You had the key.""

"My mother had the key.""

"Then why were you there?""

Brielle's voice cracked.

"Because she couldn't go herself.""

Camille stepped forward.

"That's enough.""

Isaiah looked at her.

"No.""

Camille stopped.

"I've had enough people deciding what I can handle.""

He pointed at Brielle.

"If she knew something, she should have told me.""

Camille lowered her eyes.

"She was trying to protect you.""

"By marrying me?""

Brielle flinched.

"I loved you.""

Isaiah's voice softened for the first time.

"Then you should have trusted me.""

She looked at him.

"I did.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"You trusted your fear.""

Daniel cleared his throat.

"We're running out of time.""

Isaiah looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because the house is being transferred tomorrow morning.""

Isaiah froze.

"Transferred to who?""

Daniel handed him another document.

A purchase agreement.

Isaiah read the buyer's name.

His blood went cold.

*Cole Holdings LLC.*

He looked at Daniel.

"That's my grandfather's company.""

"Yes.""

"He died.""

"The company survived him.""

"Who owns it?""

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Then Camille.

Then Brielle.

"That is the question.""

Isaiah stared at the document.

"Who signed the purchase agreement?""

Daniel pointed to the bottom.

Isaiah saw two signatures.

One belonged to an executive he didn't recognize.

The other was unmistakable.

Brielle.

His new wife.

His almost-wife.

His stomach turned.

"You signed this.""

Brielle shook her head violently.

"I didn't.""

"That's your signature.""

"I didn't sign it.""

"Then who did?""

"I don't know.""

Daniel interrupted.

"The signature is a forgery.""

Isaiah looked at him.

"How do you know?""

"Because I watched the person forge it.""

Everyone went silent.

Daniel closed the folder.

"The person who altered the original deed was not Brielle.""

"Who was it?""

Daniel looked toward the ballroom entrance.

"The person is in this room.""

Every guest turned toward one another.

Isaiah's heart pounded.

"Who?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he walked toward the wall behind the cake table.

He ran his fingers across the paneling.

Then stopped.

"Your grandfather's safe is behind this wall.""

Isaiah approached.

"What do we need?""

"The key.""

Camille held up the brass key.

"I have it.""

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"You have the other?""

She nodded.

He took both keys.

"They must be turned together.""

Isaiah stared at the wall.

"Then let's open it.""

Daniel inserted the first key.

Camille inserted the second.

They turned simultaneously.

A deep mechanical click came from behind the wall.

Something unlocked.

A narrow section of wood shifted.

Behind it was darkness.

And a steel safe.

Isaiah stepped closer.

Daniel opened it.

Inside were several ledgers.

A stack of envelopes.

A black leather journal.

And one sealed evidence bag.

Isaiah reached toward it.

Daniel stopped him.

"Wait.""

"What?""

"Look at the label.""

Isaiah leaned closer.

Written across the evidence bag were the words:

*THE NIGHT OF THOMAS COLE'S DEATH.*

His father's name.

Isaiah's hand trembled.

He looked at Evelyn.

She was crying.

"Grandma.""

She shook her head.

"I couldn't protect him.""

Isaiah opened the bag.

Inside was a keychain.

A blood-stained shirt button.

A photograph.

And a handwritten note.

He unfolded the note.

Only six words were written.

*Ask your mother about the hospital.*

Isaiah's face changed.

"My mother?""

Evelyn whispered,

"Don't.""

But it was too late.

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His mother's name appeared.

Isaiah answered.

"Mom?""

Her voice was trembling.

"Where are you?""

"At the reception.""

Silence.

Then she said,

"Isaiah, listen to me.""

"What happened to Dad?""

Another silence.

Then his mother whispered,

"Your father wasn't killed at home.""

Isaiah's grip tightened around the phone.

"Where was he?""

"The hospital.""

"Why?""

His mother's voice broke.

"Because I was there when they brought him in.""

Isaiah's eyes moved to Evelyn.

"And Grandma?""

His mother began crying.

"Your grandmother wasn't there.""

Isaiah froze.

"Then who was?""

His mother whispered,

May you like

"Brielle's mother.""

The call went dead.
