Chapter 1: The Gift That Destroyed Her Perfect Smile

“You’re nothing but a useless girl in a wheelchair.””

Brianna’s voice sliced through the ballroom, loud enough to silence the orchestra.

Nearly two hundred guests turned toward the young woman sitting beside the floor-to-ceiling windows. She wore a simple blue evening dress, her hands resting quietly in her lap. Her dark curls framed a delicate face, and her wheelchair was positioned just far enough from the main gathering to make it clear that nobody had thought to include her.

Her name was Naomi Carter.

And the woman humiliating her was about to discover that the entire evening had been arranged for a reason.

Naomi lowered her eyes.

Across the ballroom, Brianna adjusted the neckline of her shimmering gold gown, one hand resting protectively on her pregnant belly. At twenty-nine, she had mastered the art of looking innocent while making everyone around her feel small.

Especially Naomi.

“Honestly,” Brianna continued, lifting her champagne glass, “I don't understand why Mr. Whitmore insists on bringing her to family celebrations. She can't contribute anything. She just sits there expecting everyone to feel sorry for her.””

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Naomi said nothing.

She had learned that answering Brianna's insults only gave the other woman more opportunities to attack.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, the Whitmore family patriarch had invited every relative, business associate, and close family friend to his seventieth birthday celebration.

And he had personally requested Naomi's presence.

That alone had irritated Brianna.

She had spent the previous three weeks planning the event, selecting the flowers, approving the menu, and choosing the gold evening gown she believed would make her look like the undisputed future queen of the Whitmore family.

She had even arranged for Naomi's wheelchair to be placed near the service entrance.

Unfortunately for Brianna, the person who noticed that arrangement was the one man she could never afford to offend.

“That's enough!””

The deep voice came from behind her.

Edward Whitmore stepped forward, his polished black cane striking the marble floor.

At seventy, Edward remained an imposing figure. His silver hair was neatly combed, his tailored charcoal suit fit perfectly, and his dark eyes still possessed the authority that had built one of the country's most successful real estate empires.

The room fell silent.

Brianna's smile stiffened.

“Edward, darling, I was only joking,” she said.

“Was that supposed to be funny?””

Edward looked directly at her.

Brianna laughed nervously.

“Of course not. Naomi knows I don't mean anything by it.””

Naomi finally raised her eyes.

“No, Brianna. I don't.””

The response was quiet, but it made several guests turn.

Brianna's cheeks flushed.

“Excuse me?””

Edward raised one hand.

“Don't.””

His wife, Victoria Whitmore, stood near the staircase in an elegant plum-red dress. She folded her arms, her diamond bracelet catching the chandelier light.

Victoria had never liked Naomi.

In her opinion, the girl had entered the Whitmore family through pity, not merit. Naomi was the daughter of Edward's late business partner, Daniel Carter, who had died under mysterious circumstances seven years earlier.

After Daniel's death, Edward had taken Naomi under his protection.

And when a serious accident left her unable to walk, Edward had made sure she received the best care available.

Victoria had never forgiven him for it.

“Edward,” Victoria said sharply, “you're making a scene at your own birthday party.””

“Then perhaps people should stop giving me reasons to make one.””

A waiter hurried past with a silver tray.

The orchestra remained silent.

Edward turned toward Naomi.

“Are you comfortable, sweetheart?””

Naomi nodded.

“I'm fine, Mr. Whitmore.””

“Edward,” he corrected gently.

“You know you can call me Edward.””

Naomi managed a small smile.

Brianna rolled her eyes.

“Oh, this is ridiculous. We're all supposed to celebrate tonight, and somehow everything revolves around her.””

Edward looked at her for several seconds.

Then he turned toward the entrance.

“James.””

A tall assistant in a black suit immediately approached.

“Yes, sir?””

“Bring me the box.””

James disappeared through the double doors.

Brianna looked confused.

“What box?””

Edward didn't answer.

Victoria's folded arms tightened.

“Edward, whatever you're planning, I hope you're not going to embarrass this family.””

“Victoria,” Edward replied, “you should be more concerned about what someone else has done to embarrass this family.””

A murmur passed through the guests.

James returned carrying a rectangular black gift box decorated with a wide gold ribbon.

Edward accepted it.

Then he walked directly toward Brianna.

“Your gift, Brianna. Open it for everyone.””

Her expression brightened instantly.

“Oh, Edward! You shouldn't have.””

She glanced around at the guests, enjoying the attention.

Brianna had always believed Edward's approval was only a matter of time. She was carrying what everyone believed was his future grandson, and she had repeatedly reminded the family that her child would secure her position in the Whitmore estate.

She took the box.

“Is this jewelry?””

“Open it,” Edward said.

Brianna carefully untied the ribbon.

Inside lay a collection of printed photographs, several official-looking documents, and a thick sealed envelope.

Her smile remained for another second.

Then she picked up the first photograph.

It showed her standing outside a luxury hotel with a man in a navy jacket.

His hand rested against her waist.

The date printed on the back was six months earlier.

Brianna swallowed.

She picked up another photograph.

This one showed the same man kissing her beside a parked black SUV.

Her fingers began trembling.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

She pulled out the next document.

A paternity report.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she read the name at the top.

Her face drained of color.

“What is this?”” she repeated, louder this time.

“Where did you get these?””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Edward, what are you doing?””

Edward ignored her.

“Keep reading, Brianna.””

Brianna dropped the document back into the box.

“I don't know what this is. These pictures are manipulated!””

A man standing near the champagne table stepped forward.

His name was Daniel Reed.

He wore a perfectly tailored tuxedo and had been introduced to the family as Brianna's fiancé. For the past year, he had proudly told everyone that he was the father of her unborn child.

He looked from the photographs to Brianna.

“What's going on?””

Brianna shook her head.

“Daniel, don't listen to him. He's trying to humiliate me.””

Edward lifted another sheet.

“Congratulations on becoming a father, Daniel.””

He paused.

Then his voice hardened.

“If that baby is even yours.””

A glass shattered somewhere behind them.

Daniel stepped closer.

He examined the photographs, then the laboratory report.

His jaw tightened.

“Brianna…”

She reached for his arm.

“Baby, please. Let me explain.””

He pulled away.

“Who is that man?””

Brianna opened her mouth.

No sound came out.

Victoria hurried toward Daniel.

“Don't do this here. We can discuss everything privately.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Did you know?””

Victoria stopped.

That hesitation was enough to make the room even quieter.

Naomi watched from her wheelchair.

For the first time that evening, she wasn't looking at Brianna.

She was looking at Victoria.

Because Naomi recognized the photograph.

Not the man.

The hotel.

It was the same hotel where her father had supposedly attended his final business meeting before dying.

And the photograph's date was only three weeks before that meeting.

Naomi gripped the armrests of her wheelchair.

Something wasn't right.

Edward noticed her reaction.

“Naomi,” he said gently, “there is something else you need to see.””

He reached into his jacket and removed a second envelope.

This one had Naomi's name written across the front.

She stared at it.

“What's that?””

Edward looked at her for a long moment.

“Something your father left behind.””

Naomi's heart began pounding.

“My father?””

Edward nodded.

“He didn't die the way everyone told you he did.””

And as the ballroom doors slowly closed behind the security guards, Naomi realized that Brianna's humiliation was only the beginning.

May you like

Because the secret inside that envelope was about to destroy far more than one engagement.

It was about to expose the people who had stolen seven years of her life.
