Chapter 9: The Baby They Switched

Naomi stared at the hospital record.

Two babies.

Two mothers.

One handwritten authorization.

She felt as if the room had become smaller.

“Explain it,” she whispered.

Evelyn shook her head.

“Naomi, don't listen to her.””

Victoria laughed.

“Of course. That's what she has always done. She tells you what to believe, and you follow.””

Naomi looked at her.

“Put the gun down.””

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

“You sound just like your father.””

Edward stepped forward.

“Victoria, this ends now.””

She turned the weapon toward him.

“Stay where you are.””

James slowly moved his hand toward his waist.

Victoria noticed.

“I said stay where you are!””

Naomi looked at Evelyn.

“Mom, what is she talking about?””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

Then she nodded.

“It's true that two babies were born that night.””

Naomi felt her chest tighten.

“What?””

“Your mother and Victoria were both patients at the same private hospital. Victoria had suffered several miscarriages. She had been told she might never carry another child.””

Victoria's expression changed.

“Don't.””

Evelyn continued.

“I gave birth to you at 2:14 in the morning. Victoria gave birth to a boy less than an hour later.””

Naomi looked at the record.

“Then what happened?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Dr. Samuel Whitmore was Victoria's brother. He had access to the maternity ward. He discovered that Richard Whitmore's estate would pass through the male bloodline if the family had no surviving son from the original branch.””

Daniel Reed frowned.

“But my father was alive.””

“Your father had already left the family,” Evelyn explained.

“Victoria wanted a child who could restore her influence.””

Naomi stared.

“So she switched us?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Not immediately. At first, she only wanted to falsify the records so her son would be registered under the Carter family name. That would allow her to gain access to the trust through Daniel.””

Victoria's voice became sharp.

“That's not what happened.””

Evelyn turned toward her.

“Then tell her.””

Victoria's jaw tightened.

“Your mother signed the original transfer.””

Naomi looked at Evelyn.

“Did you?””

Evelyn's tears fell.

“Yes.””

Naomi recoiled.

“Why?””

“Because Victoria told me her baby had been born with a serious medical condition. She said she needed time to arrange treatment and wanted to protect him from the family press.””

Victoria laughed.

“She was always so easy to manipulate.””

Evelyn ignored her.

“I agreed to help her temporarily. But when I discovered she had changed the hospital records and registered the babies under different identities, I tried to stop it.””

Naomi looked down.

“Was I the baby who was switched?””

Evelyn nodded.

“You were.””

Naomi struggled to breathe.

“Then whose daughter am I?””

Evelyn reached for her hand.

“You are my daughter. I carried you. I gave birth to you. No document can change that.””

Naomi looked at Victoria.

“And the boy?””

Victoria's eyes hardened.

“He died.””

The words were delivered without emotion.

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Victoria turned toward her.

“Don't.””

“You told me he was dead.””

“He was.””

Evelyn looked at Naomi.

“Victoria's son didn't die in infancy. He was taken away from the hospital and placed with another family.””

Naomi's eyes widened.

“Why?””

“Because Victoria discovered that the trust would be easier to control if the boy remained outside the family. She wanted to use him later, when she had secured the financial documents.””

Daniel Reed looked at the hospital record again.

“Who was the boy?””

Evelyn turned toward him.

“I don't know his original identity.””

Victoria's expression became strangely calm.

“But I do.””

She lowered the gun slightly.

Then she looked directly at Daniel Reed.

“You were.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared at her.

“What?””

Victoria smiled.

“Your father was never Richard Whitmore's son.””

Edward's face twisted.

“That's enough!””

Victoria continued.

“Daniel Reed, your mother gave birth to you at the same hospital. You were the child Victoria had been told she could never have.””

Daniel Reed stepped backward.

“No.””

“Your father adopted you.””

Daniel looked toward Edward.

“Is that true?””

Edward appeared devastated.

“I didn't know.””

Victoria laughed.

“Of course you didn't. Richard arranged everything before he died.””

Daniel shook his head.

“So I'm not a Whitmore?””

Victoria's smile widened.

“You are. Just not in the way you thought.””

Naomi looked at the hospital record.

The truth was becoming clearer.

Victoria had wanted her own son to inherit the family fortune. But when the original arrangement failed, she had used Brianna's pregnancy and Daniel Reed's supposed connection to the family to create another path.

She had manipulated everyone.

But there was still one question.

“Why did you try to kill me?”” Naomi asked.

Victoria looked at her.

“Because you were the only person who could expose the original trust.””

“That's not the whole truth.””

Victoria's expression hardened.

“You were a threat.””

Naomi shook her head.

“You could have taken the money. You could have left the company. You could have disappeared. But you made sure I lost everything.””

Victoria's voice rose.

“Because your father refused to give me what I deserved!””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Daniel offered you a settlement.””

Victoria turned toward her.

“He offered me scraps!””

“He offered you a way out.””

“I wanted the company!””

Victoria's composure finally cracked.

“I spent years watching Edward build an empire while I sat beside him like decoration. I watched Daniel Carter become his trusted partner. I watched you walk into that family and receive everything I believed should have been mine.””

Edward looked at her.

“You had a family. You had a home. You had more money than most people could dream of.””

Victoria laughed.

“Money wasn't the point.””

“Then what was?””

She looked toward Naomi.

“Control.””

The answer was immediate.

Victoria wanted to control the inheritance, the company, the family, and the people inside it.

Naomi looked at Evelyn.

“And the accident?””

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“Victoria arranged for Marcus to take you away. She wanted the trust documents. When Daniel tried to stop her, she ordered Marcus to abandon the car.””

Victoria said nothing.

Naomi stared.

“You knew I was inside.””

Victoria raised her chin.

“Yes.””

Evelyn gasped.

Edward gripped his cane.

“Victoria!””

She continued.

“You were supposed to be frightened. You were supposed to sign the documents. I never intended for the car to crash.””

Naomi's voice became cold.

“But it did.””

Victoria looked away.

For the first time, there was something resembling regret in her expression.

Then it disappeared.

“You survived.””

Naomi stared at her.

“That is what you call it?””

Victoria lifted the gun again.

“Enough. Give me the original trust documents.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“They aren't here.””

Victoria pointed the weapon toward her.

“Where are they?””

Evelyn looked at Naomi.

“Your father gave them to me.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere only you can access.””

Naomi frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn reached into her cardigan and removed a small silver key.

The same key Daniel Carter had given Naomi earlier.

But this one was different.

It had a tiny letter engraved on it.

E.

“Your father created a second safety deposit box,” Evelyn whispered.

“He wanted both of us to have access.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Give it to me!””

Evelyn held it tightly.

“No.””

Victoria raised the gun.

James moved.

Everything happened at once.

A loud crack filled the apartment.

Evelyn collapsed.

Naomi screamed.

James tackled Victoria, sending the gun sliding beneath the sofa.

Edward shouted for help.

Daniel Reed rushed toward Evelyn.

“Call an ambulance!””

Naomi reached for her mother's hand.

“Mom! Mom, look at me!””

Evelyn's eyes fluttered.

She was bleeding from her shoulder.

“Naomi…”

“Don't talk. Please.””

Evelyn pressed the silver key into Naomi's palm.

“Your father…”

Naomi leaned closer.

“What?””

“He didn't come back alone.””

Naomi froze.

“What do you mean?””

Evelyn's breathing became shallow.

“There's someone else. Someone who knows what happened to your father before the accident.””

“Who?””

Evelyn looked toward Edward.

Then she whispered:

“Your brother.””

Naomi stared.

“My brother?””

Evelyn nodded faintly.

“The baby Victoria gave birth to. He survived.””

Daniel Reed looked stunned.

“Who is he?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“His name is Marcus.””

Naomi looked toward the hallway.

The man who had been driving the car.

The man who had disappeared during the crash.

Marcus Bell.

She shook her head.

“No. That's impossible.””

Evelyn opened her eyes one last time.

“Not Marcus Bell.””

She struggled to breathe.

“Marcus Whitmore.””

The ambulance sirens grew louder outside.

James held Victoria on the floor while Edward stood motionless.

Daniel Reed looked at Naomi.

“Your brother was the driver?””

Naomi stared at the silver key in her palm.

Her entire life had been built on a lie.

And now she was beginning to understand that the man who had put her in the wheelchair might have been the only person who could tell her what really happened.

At the hospital, doctors rushed Evelyn into surgery.

Naomi waited outside the operating room with Edward and Daniel Reed.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Edward sat beside her.

“I should have told you everything.””

Naomi looked at him.

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“I don't expect you to forgive me.””

“Good.””

Edward nodded.

Naomi looked toward the surgical doors.

“Is there anything else I should know?””

Edward hesitated.

“There is one thing.””

She turned toward him.

“Your father left me a recording shortly before he disappeared. He said that if you ever discovered the truth about Evelyn, I should show it to you.””

Naomi held out her hand.

Edward gave her a small memory card.

She inserted it into her phone.

The screen displayed a video.

Daniel Carter appeared.

He looked exhausted, with a bandage across his forehead.

He was sitting in a dark room.

“Naomi,” he began, “if you're watching this, then Evelyn has finally found you.””

Naomi's eyes filled.

Daniel continued.

“There is something I have never told anyone. The night of the accident, I wasn't trying to escape Victoria.””

He paused.

“I was trying to save your brother.””

The recording flickered.

Then Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus wasn't the only person involved in the accident. There was another driver.””

Naomi leaned closer.

Daniel's voice dropped.

“And that driver was—”

The video abruptly ended.

Naomi stared at the black screen.

Then her phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

Unknown number.

*Your father is alive, but he isn't the man you think he is. Meet me at the Whitmore estate at midnight. Come without Edward.*

A photograph followed.

It showed Daniel Carter standing beside Victoria.

Both were smiling.

The date was from three weeks earlier.

Naomi's blood ran cold.

If the photograph was real, then her father had been meeting Victoria recently.

And if he had…

Why had he allowed everyone to believe he was fighting her?
