Chapter 10: The Last Name on the Birth Certificate

At 11:47 p.m., Naomi received another message.

*Midnight. The Whitmore estate. Come alone. Your father's life depends on it.*

She stared at the photograph attached to the message.

Daniel Carter stood beside Victoria in front of the estate's library. He wore a dark suit, and his expression was calm. Victoria had one hand resting on his shoulder.

It looked like a photograph of two old friends.

Not two people who had spent seven years supposedly trying to destroy each other.

Naomi enlarged the image.

Something caught her attention.

Behind them, on the library desk, stood a small bronze clock.

She recognized it immediately.

Her father had owned that clock when she was a child. It had disappeared from the family house after his supposed death.

She looked at the timestamp.

Three weeks ago.

Her father had been at the estate.

Alive.

And someone had known.

Naomi put her phone down.

Across the hospital corridor, Edward sat with his head lowered. Daniel Reed was speaking with a police officer, while Margaret had gone to collect the original financial records.

Evelyn was still in surgery.

Naomi approached Edward.

“I need to go somewhere.””

He looked up.

“Where?””

“The estate.””

Edward immediately stood.

“No.””

“Someone sent me a photograph of my father.””

His expression changed.

“Let me see.””

She handed him the phone.

Edward examined the picture.

Then his face became strangely still.

“That clock.””

“You recognize it?””

He nodded.

“It was in Daniel's office.””

“Why would he be with Victoria?””

Edward didn't answer.

Naomi's voice hardened.

“You know something.””

Edward sat down again.

“Three weeks ago, I received a package containing a letter from Daniel. He said he had information about the original accident.””

Naomi stared.

“And you didn't tell me?””

“I thought it was a trap.””

“What did the letter say?””

Edward reached into his jacket and removed a folded piece of paper.

“I kept it.””

Naomi unfolded it.

Edward,

Victoria has agreed to meet me. She claims she wants to confess everything, but I don't trust her.

If anything happens to me, find the second ledger. It contains the names of everyone involved in the original arrangement.

Do not let Naomi inherit the company until she understands what happened to Marcus.

Naomi read the final sentence twice.

“What does this mean?””

Edward looked at her.

“Your father believed Marcus had been involved in something much bigger than the accident.””

Naomi shook her head.

“Marcus Bell?””

Edward nodded.

“He was the driver, but he was also responsible for handling certain private security arrangements.””

“Why would my father tell you not to let me inherit the company?””

Edward lowered his eyes.

“Because he believed someone inside the family had a legitimate claim to it.””

Naomi remembered Evelyn's words.

Your brother.

“Marcus Whitmore.””

Edward looked at her sharply.

“You know?””

Naomi nodded.

“Mom told me.””

Edward closed his eyes.

“Then we need to find him.””

At 11:58 p.m., Naomi entered the Whitmore estate.

She wasn't alone.

James followed several feet behind her, and two security officers waited outside the main entrance. Edward had insisted on accompanying her, but Naomi had refused to let him risk his life.

She had made one condition.

Nobody would enter the library until she gave the signal.

The house was dark.

Only the hallway lamps were illuminated.

Naomi moved toward the library.

The door stood slightly open.

Inside, a man sat behind the desk.

Daniel Carter.

Her father.

He looked up.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he stood.

“Naomi.””

She stopped at the doorway.

“Why?””

Daniel's expression softened.

“Sweetheart—”

“Don't call me that until you explain why you were meeting Victoria.””

He looked toward the chair opposite him.

“Sit down.””

“No.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“You have every right to be angry.””

“Seven years, Dad. Seven years.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

“You let me believe you were dead. You let me believe Mom was dead. You let me spend years in hospitals wondering why nobody could tell me what happened.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“I thought staying away was the only way to keep you safe.””

Naomi shook her head.

“That's what everyone says. Edward says it. Mom says it.

Victoria says it. Nobody ever tells me the truth.””

Daniel opened a drawer.

He removed a thick black ledger.

“This is why.””

Naomi approached the desk.

The cover was worn, and several pages had been marked with red tabs.

“What's inside?””

“Every payment connected to the original accident.””

She opened it.

Names.

Dates.

Account numbers.

Signatures.

Her eyes moved down the first page.

Then she stopped.

Marcus Bell.

Victoria Whitmore.

Samuel Whitmore.

And beneath them, another name.

Edward Whitmore.

Naomi looked up.

“Why is Edward here?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Because his signature was used to authorize the payment to Marcus.””

“But he said he never signed it.””

“He didn't.””

“Then why did you leave him out of the investigation?””

“Because I suspected someone had access to his private accounts. I needed to know who.””

Naomi turned another page.

A second set of payments appeared.

This time, the recipient was a medical facility.

The same facility where Evelyn had received treatment.

“Who paid for Mom's treatment?””

“I did.””

“Through a company connected to Victoria?””

Daniel nodded.

“She was being watched. I needed the payments to look like they came from someone she trusted.””

Naomi looked at him.

“So you were working with Victoria?””

“Temporarily.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed I was helping her recover the money she thought belonged to her. I needed her to reveal the identities of the people who had helped arrange your accident.””

Naomi closed the ledger.

“And Marcus?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Marcus was your brother.””

“Why did he drive the car?””

“Because Victoria told him you were going to be taken somewhere safe. She promised him that nobody would hurt you.””

Naomi's voice trembled.

“He abandoned me.””

Daniel nodded.

“He made a terrible choice.””

“Did he know who I was?””

“Yes.””

Naomi closed her eyes.

The betrayal was almost too much to absorb.

“Where is he now?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he reached beneath the desk and placed a second photograph in front of her.

It showed a young man standing outside a rehabilitation center.

He was holding a bouquet of white flowers.

Naomi recognized the date.

It was the anniversary of her accident.

“Who is this?””

“Marcus.””

Naomi stared.

“He came to see me?””

“Every year.””

“Why didn't he come inside?””

“Because he believed you would never forgive him.””

Naomi laughed bitterly.

“He didn't even give me the chance.””

Daniel nodded.

“He knows.””

A noise came from the hallway.

Naomi turned.

James appeared in the doorway.

“Miss Carter, we have a problem.””

“What?””

“The security cameras have gone offline.””

Daniel immediately stood.

“She's here.””

Naomi looked at him.

“Who?””

Before he could answer, the library doors opened.

Victoria entered.

She was wearing a black evening coat, and her hair was perfectly arranged. Her expression was almost peaceful.

Behind her stood Marcus Bell.

But he no longer looked like the frightened driver Naomi had seen at the loading entrance.

He carried himself like someone who had spent years preparing for this moment.

“Hello, sister,” he said.

Naomi stared at him.

Victoria smiled.

“Now we can finally finish this.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Victoria, this is over.””

She laughed.

“Daniel, you have been saying that for seven years.””

She looked toward Naomi.

“Do you know why your father survived?””

Naomi said nothing.

“Because I let him.””

Daniel's face hardened.

Victoria continued.

“After the accident, I needed Daniel alive. He knew where the original trust documents were hidden. I thought he would eventually give them to me.””

Naomi looked at her father.

“Is that true?””

Daniel nodded.

“I was held in a private property for several months. Marcus helped me escape.””

Naomi turned toward her brother.

“Then why did you keep driving for her?””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“Because I owed her.””

“You owed her?””

“She raised me.””

Victoria smiled.

“His biological mother abandoned him. I took him in.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You stole him from the hospital.””

Victoria's smile vanished.

“I gave him a life.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You told me Evelyn had died.””

“She did die to us.””

“You told me Naomi was the reason I couldn't have a family.””

Victoria turned toward him.

“Because she was.””

Marcus's face tightened.

Daniel Reed entered the library behind James.

He stopped when he saw Marcus.

“Who is this?””

Naomi looked at him.

“My brother.””

Daniel Reed stared.

Then he looked toward Victoria.

“So that's why you wanted my DNA report.””

Victoria's expression changed.

Daniel Reed continued.

“You knew I wasn't the biological father of Brianna's baby. But you also knew Marcus had a claim to the trust.””

Victoria remained silent.

Naomi finally understood.

Victoria had been trying to create a legitimate heir through Brianna's pregnancy while hiding the existence of her own son.

But the paternity test had destroyed that plan.

And Marcus was the person she had kept hidden for years.

Daniel Reed stepped toward the desk.

“You used me.””

Victoria looked at him.

“You were useful.””

He shook his head.

“You destroyed my life for a company.””

Victoria's voice became cold.

“Don't pretend you were ever part of this family.””

Daniel Reed looked at Naomi.

Then he quietly placed a document on the desk.

“Maybe I wasn't.””

Naomi examined it.

It was a laboratory report.

A DNA comparison.

Daniel Reed and Marcus Bell.

The probability of a biological relationship was 99.98 percent.

Naomi looked up.

“What?””

Daniel Reed nodded.

“I had a private test done after what Evelyn told us.””

Marcus stared at the report.

Daniel Reed continued.

“Apparently, we're brothers.””

For the first time, Marcus looked genuinely shocked.

Victoria stepped backward.

“No.””

Daniel Reed looked at her.

“You didn't just hide one child.””

He pointed toward the document.

“You separated both of us from the family.””

Marcus looked at Victoria.

“You told me I was an only child.””

Victoria's composure shattered.

“You were supposed to be protected!””

“From what?””

“From people like them!””

Marcus shook his head.

“You mean from my own family?””

Victoria's eyes filled with rage.

Then she reached into her coat.

James shouted.

“Don't move!””

Victoria pulled out a small pistol.

Daniel moved toward Naomi.

Marcus stepped forward.

But Victoria wasn't pointing at Naomi.

She aimed at the black ledger.

“If I can't have the company, nobody will.””

She fired.

The bullet struck the desk.

James tackled her before she could fire again.

The weapon skidded across the floor.

Marcus rushed toward the ledger.

Naomi's wheelchair struck the side of the desk as she reached for it.

Daniel pulled her back.

“Are you hurt?””

“No.””

James secured Victoria's hands.

The police officers entered seconds later.

Victoria struggled as they pulled her toward the hallway.

“You think you've won?”” she screamed.

Naomi looked at her.

“No. I think it's finally over.””

Victoria turned.

“You have no idea what you've inherited.””

Naomi looked down at the ledger.

“I inherited the truth.””

Victoria was escorted out.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus approached Naomi.

He stopped in front of her wheelchair.

“I know I don't deserve forgiveness.””

Naomi looked at him.

“You were there.””

He nodded.

“I was.””

“You knew I was in the car.””

“Yes.””

“And you drove away.””

His eyes filled.

“I was twenty years old. Victoria told me you would be taken to a private hospital. She said your father had agreed to it. When I realized what she had done, I went back.””

Naomi stared.

“But I was already gone.””

Marcus nodded.

“I looked for you for years.””

“You could have told me.””

“I was afraid.””

Naomi looked away.

She had spent years being afraid herself.

Afraid of the future.

Afraid of being abandoned.

Afraid that the people she loved would disappear.

“I can't forgive you tonight,” she whispered.

Marcus lowered his head.

“I understand.””

“But I don't want another lie.””

He looked up.

“There won't be another one.””

Naomi extended her hand.

Marcus took it carefully.

It wasn't forgiveness.

Not yet.

But it was a beginning.

Six months later, the Whitmore estate looked different.

The ballroom had been renovated, but Naomi had requested that the enormous chandelier remain exactly where it was.

She wanted to remember the night everything changed.

Victoria was awaiting trial on charges related to fraud, forgery, conspiracy, and the original attempted murder investigation. The financial records had exposed several accomplices, including former company executives and the private doctor who had falsified the birth records.

Brianna had agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Her relationship with Daniel Reed was over.

She had given birth to a healthy baby boy, and a court-ordered paternity test confirmed that Daniel Reed was not the child's biological father.

Daniel Reed had chosen to move away from the family business.

He and Marcus were slowly building a relationship, discovering the childhood they had never shared.

Margaret Ellis had returned as an independent financial adviser.

And Edward had stepped down from the company board.

He still visited Naomi every Sunday.

Sometimes they talked about business.

Sometimes they said nothing at all.

But the greatest change was Evelyn.

She had survived surgery.

She was now living in a quiet house near Naomi's new home, surrounded by photographs, flowers, and the daughter she had once believed was gone forever.

Daniel Carter had also returned.

He and Evelyn were rebuilding their marriage slowly, one honest conversation at a time.

There were still painful questions.

There were still apologies that needed to be made.

But nobody was pretending anymore.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, Naomi sat in the garden beneath an old oak tree.

She wore a simple blue dress.

Evelyn sat beside her, holding a cup of tea.

Daniel Carter approached with a small wooden box.

“Can I give you something?””

Naomi smiled.

“Another secret?””

He laughed.

“No more secrets.””

He placed the box on her lap.

Inside lay a photograph.

It showed Naomi as a newborn, wrapped in the same pale yellow blanket from Evelyn's old photograph.

Beside her lay another baby.

A little boy.

Their hands were touching.

Naomi looked up.

“You kept this?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother took it the morning you were born.””

Evelyn smiled through her tears.

“I always said you two would look after each other.””

Naomi looked toward the garden gate.

Marcus and Daniel Reed were arguing over a barbecue grill.

Edward sat nearby, laughing at something Margaret had said.

For the first time in years, the family was together without anyone pretending.

Naomi returned her attention to the photograph.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“Why did you name me Naomi?””

Daniel smiled.

“Because your mother said you would be a light in a very dark world.””

Naomi looked at Evelyn.

Her mother reached over and gently squeezed her hand.

“You were,” Evelyn whispered.

Naomi leaned back.

For seven years, she had believed her story was defined by the accident.

By the wheelchair.

By the people who had abandoned her.

But she finally understood something.

The worst thing that had happened to her did not have to become the most important thing about her.

She had lost seven years.

She could never get them back.

But she had found her parents.

She had discovered a brother.

She had reclaimed her name, her inheritance, and the truth.

And most importantly, she had learned that family was not the people who controlled your life.

It was the people who stood beside you when the truth finally came out.

Daniel placed his hand on her shoulder.

“Are you happy, sweetheart?””

Naomi looked around the garden.

Then she smiled.

“I'm home.””

Across the lawn, Marcus raised his glass.

“To the Whitmore family!””

Daniel Reed laughed.

“Technically, we should probably say the Carter family too.””

Edward lifted his glass.

“To both.””

Everyone laughed.

And for the first time, Naomi didn't feel like the girl in the wheelchair sitting outside the family celebration.

She was no longer waiting to be invited.

May you like

She was the reason the family had finally come together.

*THE END.*
