Chapter 5: The Woman in the Hallway
For one second, I couldn't move.
Marcus stepped in front of me.
“Who are you?””
The woman didn't answer him.
She was looking at me.
Older than I remembered.
Hair streaked with silver.
A thin scar ran from beneath her left ear to the edge of her jaw.
But her eyes were the same.
I remembered those eyes from my childhood.
My father's business partner.
His closest friend.
The woman who had been at our house the night before he died.
“Evelyn?””
She nodded.
I heard the name leave my mouth like it belonged to someone else's life.
“You're alive.””
“I never died.””
“I know.””
My voice shook.
“You disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your father told me to.””
Marcus looked between us.
“Can someone explain what's going on?””
Evelyn walked toward the kitchen.
“Come inside.””
I didn't move.
“Who said you could touch the files in my company?””
She stopped.
“I didn't.””
“Then who did?””
“Julian.””
My chest tightened.
“Where is he?””
“Not here.””
“Where?””
“Where he always goes when something falls apart.””
“And where is that?””
Evelyn gave a bitter smile.
“Your mother's house.””
I stared at her.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
Marcus swore under his breath.
Evelyn sat at the old kitchen table.
I remained standing.
“Start talking.””
She looked at me.
“Your father knew he was dying.””
“I know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You know he died. That's different.””
I felt anger rise.
“Don't play games with me.””
“I’m not.””
She folded her hands.
“Your father discovered that money was disappearing from the company.””
“Julian?””
“He suspected Julian first.””
“He was right.””
“He wasn't.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
“Julian was stealing.””
“I know that.””
“No.””
Evelyn leaned forward.
“Julian was stealing because someone told him to.””
Silence.
Marcus spoke first.
“Who?””
Evelyn looked directly at me.
“Your mother.””
I laughed once.
It came out empty.
“No.””
“She hated the company.””
“She helped build it.””
“She helped build your father's reputation.””
Evelyn’s voice hardened.
“Not the company.””
I felt dizzy.
“My mother was his wife.””
“She wanted control.””
“Of what?””
“Everything.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It will.””
Evelyn stood and walked toward a cabinet.
She opened a drawer.
Inside were files.
Dozens.
Bank statements.
Contracts.
Photographs.
Letters.
And a sealed envelope.
She handed it to me.
My name was written on the front.
My father's handwriting.
I stared at it.
“What is this?””
“Something he wanted you to have when you were old enough.””
“I was old enough twelve years ago.””
“You weren't safe twelve years ago.””
“Safe from who?””
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
Then back at me.
“Everyone you trusted.””
My hands trembled as I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single letter.
Danielle,
If you are reading this, then the company survived.
That means one of two things happened.
Either your mother took control.
Or you did.
If it is you, listen carefully.
Never let Julian tell you he is protecting the family.
Never let your mother tell you the company belongs to the Carters.
And never believe that my death was an accident.
I stopped reading.
My throat closed.
Marcus reached for the letter.
“Keep going.””
I did.
The person who caused my death believes the truth died with me.
It didn't.
I recorded everything.
There is a second copy of the recording inside the executive system.
It is hidden behind the owner access page.
My eyes lifted.
“The employee system.””
Evelyn nodded.
“That is why they panicked when you refreshed your page.””
I remembered Paige's face.
The termination notice.
The sudden fear.
“You knew I'd come to the store.””
“No.””
“Then why was I photographed?””
“Because someone was watching you.””
“Who?””
Evelyn hesitated.
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
She whispered,
“Julian wasn't trying to stop you from discovering the restaurant incident.””
“Then what was he trying to do?””
“Push you toward it.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“So you'd fire the cashier.””
I stared at her.
“Why would he want that?””
“Because the cashier saw something.””
“What?””
“Three weeks ago, she found a file in the back office.””
“What file?””
“One showing payments to your mother's trust.””
My pulse raced.
“So the refusal…”
“Was bait.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn't explain why she discriminated against us.””
“It does if Julian needed you angry enough to investigate.””
I felt sick.
The humiliation.
The photograph.
The messages.
The employee system.
The store.
Everything had been designed to pull me toward a hidden file.
Evelyn reached for another folder.
“The cashier wasn't the real target.””
“Then who was?””
“You.””
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice whispered,
“Don't trust Evelyn.””
I looked at her.
She stared back.
“Who is this?””
The caller ignored me.
“Open the owner access page.””
“How do you know about that?””
“You only have ten minutes.””
“Why?””
“Because Julian has already started deleting it.””
The line went dead.
I turned to Marcus.
“Get me a laptop.””
He opened his bag.
I sat at the old farmhouse table and logged into the company system.
Owner portal.
Executive access.
Security verification.
The page loaded.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then a hidden folder appeared.
*CARTER / PRIVATE — LEGACY FILES*
I clicked it.
Inside was one audio recording.
Dated eleven years, eight months, and nineteen days ago.
The night before my father died.
I pressed play.
Static.
Then my father's voice.
“Danielle, if you're hearing this, I didn't die because of the heart attack.””
I stopped breathing.
A second voice came through.
A woman's.
My mother's.
“Then you shouldn't have found out.””
The recording crackled.
My father's voice rose.
“You stole from your own children.””
My mother answered softly.
“No.””
A pause.
“I saved what should have been mine.””
Then another voice joined them.
A man's voice.
Julian.
“You said she'd never know.””
I looked at Marcus.
Neither of us moved.
The recording continued.
My father said,
“If anything happens to me, Danielle will inherit everything.””
Julian replied,
“She won't if the trust transfers first.””
Then my mother's voice said the sentence that made my blood turn cold.
“Good. Then after tonight, there won't be a daughter left to inherit anything.””
The audio abruptly cut off.
I stared at the screen.
Marcus whispered,
“Danielle…”
I clicked the file details.

Then I saw the final line.
*Last accessed: 14 minutes ago.*
Someone was still inside my system.
May you like
And the access name wasn't Julian.
It was mine.
