Chapter 2: The Little Girl With the Rabbit
The courtroom doors opened slowly.
Camilla heard the soft squeak of the hinges before she saw the child standing between the doors.
A little girl.
Perhaps six years old.
Her hair was arranged in neat braids, and she wore a yellow coat that looked a size too large for her small frame. Both arms wrapped around a worn plush rabbit, its gray ears bent from years of being held.
For a moment, the girl didn't move.
She stared at the rows of unfamiliar faces, the wooden benches, and the judge seated high above everyone else.
Then her eyes found Camilla.
“Lily?””
Camilla's voice broke.
She pushed herself halfway out of her chair, one hand instinctively protecting her belly.
“Lily, sweetheart?””
The little girl took a step forward.
Her lower lip trembled.
“Mommy?””
Camilla felt the room tilt.
She had not seen Lily in eleven days.
Eleven nights without tucking her into bed. Eleven mornings without hearing her small feet running down the hallway. Eleven days of unanswered questions and carefully worded explanations from Daniel's attorney.
Daniel had insisted that Lily was staying with his sister while the adults handled their legal problems.
He had said the arrangement was temporary.
He had said the child was too young to understand what was happening.
He had said many things.
But he had never told Camilla that Lily would appear in court.
Vanessa shot to her feet.
“No. Not her!””
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Every head turned.
Judge Carter's expression hardened.
“Ms. Reed, sit down.””
Vanessa didn't sit.
“Your Honor, this is inappropriate. She's a child. She has no business being dragged into an adult dispute.””
Lily flinched at the sudden volume.
The rabbit slipped slightly in her hands.
Camilla hurried around the table, but the bailiff raised one palm gently to indicate that she should wait until the judge permitted her to approach.
“Mrs. Caldwell,” Judge Carter said, her voice softening, “please remain where you are for just a moment. We need to make sure Lily is comfortable.””
Camilla stopped.
Every instinct in her body screamed at her to cross the room and gather her daughter into her arms.
Instead, she crouched slightly so Lily could see her face.
“It's okay, baby,” Camilla whispered.
“Mommy's right here.””
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
“I brought Bunny.””
Camilla pressed her fingers against her lips.
“You did, sweetheart.””
Lily held up the rabbit as if presenting proof that she had followed the instructions someone had given her.
“I didn't leave him.””
“No,” Camilla said, fighting to keep her voice steady.
“You don't ever have to leave Bunny.””
Daniel suddenly stood.
“Your Honor, I object to this entire situation.””
Judge Carter looked at him.
“You may explain your objection when I invite you to speak.””
“But I have parental rights, and nobody informed me that Lily would be brought here to testify.””
“Mr. Caldwell, you were notified that the court would hear additional evidence.””
“Not from her!””
The words rang through the courtroom.
Lily recoiled.
Daniel saw it, but instead of lowering his voice, he took a step toward the aisle.
“Lily, sweetheart, you don't need to be here. Come over to Daddy.””
The little girl pressed the rabbit against her chest.
She didn't move.
“Lily,” Daniel repeated, forcing a smile that looked painful on his face.
“Come here. Everything is fine.””
She shook her head.
Vanessa grabbed Daniel's sleeve.
“Stop talking to her,” she hissed.
He jerked his arm away.
“Don't tell me how to talk to my daughter.””
For a second, Vanessa looked almost frightened.
Then she leaned closer to him and whispered, “You said she didn't remember.””
Camilla heard her.
So did the judge.
Judge Carter's gaze sharpened.
“What exactly did you say, Ms. Reed?””
Vanessa froze.
“I said nothing relevant to these proceedings.””
“Then you should have no difficulty repeating it clearly.””
“I was speaking privately.””
“In a courtroom, while a child is standing before me?””
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
Daniel rubbed a hand over his forehead.
“Your Honor, Lily has been through a confusing period. Her mother and I are separating, and she may have misunderstood something she witnessed.””
Camilla turned toward him.
“Something she witnessed where, Daniel?””
He looked at her sharply.
“Don't.””
“Don't what? Ask what happened to our daughter?””
“I said she's confused.””
“You haven't seen her cry herself to sleep because she thinks she did something wrong. You haven't been there when she asks me why Daddy doesn't come home. And now you're standing here telling a judge she doesn't know what she's talking about before she's even said a word.””
Daniel's face reddened.
“You have no idea what I've been dealing with.””
Camilla let out a small, disbelieving laugh.
“Then tell me.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Judge Carter raised her hand.
“Enough. We are not going to argue over this child.””
She turned to the bailiff.
“Please bring Lily to the witness area. Make sure she has water and a seat. I want the attorneys to address the appropriate procedure before any substantive questions are asked.””
The bailiff approached Lily slowly and knelt to her level.
“Hi, Lily. My name is Officer Harris. Would you like to sit over here with me?””
Lily glanced at Camilla.
Camilla nodded.
“It's okay, sweetheart. You can sit down.””
Lily walked toward the witness area, her shoes making tiny sounds against the polished floor.
As she passed Daniel, he reached out.
“Lily, look at Daddy.””
She kept walking.
His hand remained suspended in the air for a moment before he lowered it.
Vanessa watched the child with an expression that had lost every trace of confidence.
When Lily was seated, Judge Carter leaned forward.
“Lily, I'm Judge Carter. You are not in trouble, and nobody is asking you to choose between your parents. Do you understand?””
Lily nodded cautiously.
“Can you tell me why you wanted to come here today?””
Lily rubbed one of the rabbit's worn ears between her fingers.
“Because Mommy doesn't know.””
Camilla's breath caught.
“Doesn't know what, sweetheart?”” the judge asked.
Lily looked at Daniel.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
The little girl tightened her grip on Bunny until its soft fabric bunched between her fingers.
“About Daddy and the mean lady.””
Vanessa rose so abruptly that her chair scraped backward.
“Your Honor, stop this!””
The bailiff stepped between her and the witness area.
“Ma'am, return to your seat.””
Vanessa pointed toward Lily.
“She doesn't understand what she's saying! Someone has coached her!””
Lily's shoulders began to shake.
Camilla moved closer to the table, her voice suddenly fierce.
“Don't you dare frighten my daughter.””
Daniel stood again.
“This has gone too far. Lily, you don't have to answer anything. Daddy will take you home.””
The bailiff blocked his path.
“Sir, you need to remain behind the table.””
“Move.””
“Sir, step back.””
Daniel stared at the uniformed officer, his nostrils flaring. For several seconds, it looked as though he might try to push past him.
Then the judge struck her gavel.
“One more disruption, Mr. Caldwell, and I will have you removed from this courtroom.””
Daniel stopped.
Lily watched him with wide, frightened eyes.
Judge Carter waited until the room settled.
Then she addressed the little girl again.
“Lily, you said you saw something. You don't have to rush. Take your time.””
Lily lowered her eyes to Bunny.
“I was hiding.””
“Where were you hiding?””
“In the big house.””
Daniel's face turned ashen.
Camilla's mind raced.
Their family home.
The home Daniel had claimed was empty whenever Vanessa visited. The home where Lily had once drawn pictures on the refrigerator and left tiny shoes beside the front door.
Judge Carter continued gently.
“What happened while you were hiding?””
Lily swallowed.
“I heard Daddy say Mommy couldn't know.””
Daniel gripped the table.
Vanessa's fingers flew to her mouth.
Lily lifted her head, tears shining along her lower lashes.
“Then the mean lady said they had to make sure Mommy never found out what they did.””
Camilla felt a cold sensation move through her chest.
“What did they do, sweetheart?”” she whispered.
Judge Carter raised a hand, asking Camilla to let the child continue at her own pace.
Lily looked directly at her mother.
For one terrible moment, she seemed to forget the judge, the lawyers, and everyone else in the room.
She was simply a little girl trying to explain something that had frightened her.
“I saw what they did,” Lily whispered.
Vanessa leaned forward, her face twisting.
“Don't let her talk!””
Judge Carter's gaze snapped toward her.
“Ms. Reed, sit down. Now.””
Vanessa dropped into her chair, breathing hard.
The judge returned her attention to Lily.
“Lily, what did you see?””
The child opened her mouth.
Daniel's posture became rigid.
Vanessa's eyes widened.
And just before Lily could speak, Daniel whispered three words that only the people nearest him could hear.
“She's got the key.””
Camilla turned toward him.
“The key to what?””
Daniel didn't answer.
May you like
But Lily reached into the pocket of her yellow coat, pulled out a small brass key, and placed it on the witness table beside Bunny.
Then she said, “This is what Daddy told me to hide.””
