Chapter 6: The Paper Hidden in Bunny

Camilla did not touch the rabbit.

She wanted to. Every instinct urged her to pull apart the loose seam and discover what Daniel had hidden inside the toy.

But Lily's frightened expression stopped her.

If the rabbit contained evidence, it needed to be handled carefully. And if Daniel had hidden something inside it, Camilla wasn't going to risk destroying it by acting out of fear.

She looked at Ms. Bennett.

“Can we have the officers examine Bunny?””

“Of course,” the specialist replied.

“We'll explain to Lily what is happening and make sure the toy is handled appropriately.””

Camilla turned to her daughter.

“Sweetheart, I know Bunny is special to you. Nobody is going to take him away without explaining why. But if Daddy put something inside him that could help keep us safe, we need to let the officers look.””

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“Will they cut him?””

“They might need to examine the seam. They'll try to preserve him, but I can't promise exactly what they'll need to do.””

Lily considered this.

Then she lifted Bunny with both hands and placed him in Camilla's lap.

“Tell them to be gentle.””

Camilla kissed her forehead.

“I will.””

The officers arrived a short time later. They documented the toy's condition, photographed the loose seam, and arranged for a qualified evidence examiner to inspect it under appropriate procedures.

Lily watched from beside Ms. Bennett, gripping Camilla's fingers.

Nobody rushed.

Nobody made promises they could not keep.

When the examiner finally returned, he carried a clear evidence sleeve containing a folded sheet of paper.

Camilla stared at it.

“Is that what was inside Bunny?””

“Yes,” the officer replied.

“The paper was concealed inside the lining. We've preserved the toy and documented how the item was recovered.””

“Can you tell me what's written on it?””

“We're reviewing the document now. You'll receive information through the appropriate process.””

Camilla nodded, although disappointment pressed against her chest.

She had hoped for answers.

Instead, she had another sealed envelope and another reason to fear what her husband had done.

That evening, Camilla and Lily were taken to a secure temporary location arranged through her attorney. It was a modest furnished apartment with clean white walls, a small kitchen, and windows overlooking a quiet courtyard.

It was nothing like the sprawling house where Lily had learned to ride a bicycle.

But there were locks on the doors, working lights, and no photographs of Daniel smiling beside Camilla as if their marriage had been perfect.

For the first time in weeks, Camilla could breathe without seeing him in every corner.

Lily sat on the couch, watching a cartoon at low volume while the repaired rabbit rested beside her.

Camilla stood at the kitchen counter, staring at her phone.

Daniel had called seventeen times.

His messages had begun with demands.

Pick up.

We need to talk.

Then came the softer ones.

Camilla, please. I'm worried about Lily.

You know I would never hurt you.

Finally, the message that made her hands go cold.

You don't know what she found. Please don't let them open that storage unit.

Camilla read it twice.

Then she took a screenshot and sent it to her attorney, who forwarded it to the appropriate investigator.

She did not reply.

A few minutes later, another message arrived.

If they open room 214, everyone loses everything.

Camilla sat down.

Everyone.

Not just Daniel.

Not just Vanessa.

Everyone.

She looked toward Lily, who was trying to fit Bunny's repaired ear through the opening of a small dollhouse.

Camilla had spent so much time thinking about what Daniel had taken from her that she had almost forgotten the possibility that he had endangered their daughter, too.

Her phone rang again.

This time, the caller was her attorney.

“Camilla, the investigator has received the preliminary report on the concealed document.””

“What does it say?””

“It appears to be a photocopy of an insurance-related form. The examiner has not yet established its authenticity or whether it was ever submitted to an insurer.””

Camilla gripped the phone.

“What kind of insurance?””

“An accidental-death policy naming you as the insured person and identifying Mr. Caldwell as the beneficiary.””

She could not speak.

Her attorney continued carefully.

“The form contains your name, but the signature appears disputed. The investigator is checking whether the document corresponds to an actual policy or an abandoned application.””

Camilla stared at the wall.

An insurance policy.

Her death.

Daniel's name as beneficiary.

The failed brakes on her car.

The pieces seemed to connect, but she knew that suspicion was not proof. The investigators needed to establish what had happened, who had created the document, and whether anyone had acted on it.

Still, she felt sick.

“Did Daniel submit it?””

“We don't know yet.””

“Did he forge my signature?””

“That has not been established. A document examiner will need to compare the signature against verified samples.””

Camilla shut her eyes.

“Thank you.””

After ending the call, she sat in silence until Lily climbed onto the couch beside her.

“Mommy, are you sad?””

Camilla wiped her cheeks.

“A little.””

“Because of Daddy?””

She considered lying.

Then she remembered her promise.

“Because some of the things Daddy may have done are very serious, and I don't know all the answers yet.””

Lily leaned against her arm.

“I told the truth.””

“Yes, you did.””

“Even when I was scared.””

Camilla kissed her braids.

“Especially then.””

For a while, they sat together without speaking.

Then Camilla's attorney called again.

“There's been a development at the storage facility.””

Camilla straightened.

“What happened?””

“Investigators obtained authorization to inspect the unit. They found financial records, several electronic storage devices, and documents connected to the company named in the disputed transfer authorization.””

“Anything else?””

A pause.

“Yes. A sealed envelope addressed to you.””

Camilla's stomach tightened.

“What's inside?””

“We haven't reviewed the full contents yet. The investigator has confirmed that it contains a handwritten letter and a photograph.””

“Whose photograph?””

“Yours.””

Camilla felt a chill run down her spine.

“Doing what?””

“I haven't seen the image myself. The investigator says it appears to have been taken without your knowledge.””

She looked toward the apartment window.

Outside, the courtyard lights had switched on. A woman walked past carrying groceries, and somewhere below, a child laughed.

Ordinary life continued.

Camilla wondered how many ordinary days she had lived while Daniel was hiding things that might have changed everything.

Her attorney lowered his voice.

“The letter also contains a reference to a date.””

“What date?””

“The day of the charity dinner when your car's brakes failed.””

Camilla pressed her hand over her mouth.

“Has anyone contacted Daniel?””

“The investigators are handling that. I need you to avoid contacting him directly and preserve any further messages.””

“Of course.””

After the call, Camilla moved to the window.

She could see her own reflection in the dark glass: tired eyes, natural curls pulled back carelessly, one hand resting over her pregnant belly.

She looked like a woman who had survived a difficult divorce.

She felt like a woman standing at the edge of something far worse.

Her phone buzzed.

An unknown number.

For several seconds, she considered ignoring it.

Then another message appeared.

This is Vanessa. I know you have every reason to hate me.

Camilla stared at the screen.

A second message followed.

I was wrong about Daniel. I was wrong about everything.

Then a photograph arrived.

It showed the storage unit's open metal door, with boxes stacked along the walls. On the floor lay a black document case.

The next message contained only one sentence.

The letter in that case wasn't written by Daniel.

Camilla typed a reply.

*Who wrote it?*

The response came almost immediately.

His first wife.

Camilla's fingers went numb.

Daniel had told her he had never been married before.

He had said there had been one serious relationship in college, but nothing that lasted.

She had never seen divorce papers, wedding photographs, or even an old family picture suggesting another woman.

She typed another question.

*What was her name?*

Vanessa's answer appeared.

Elizabeth Caldwell.

Camilla searched her memory, but the name meant nothing.

Then Vanessa sent one final message.

Camilla, before you read that letter, you need to know what happened to her.

A call came through immediately afterward.

Camilla answered.

Vanessa's voice was barely recognizable. Gone was the commanding woman who had declared that Camilla deserved nothing.

“Listen to me,” Vanessa whispered.

“I know you think I wanted Daniel all to myself. I did. I wanted his money, his house, his promises. I thought I was the woman he had chosen.””

“Why are you telling me this now?””

“Because I found out that everything he told me about his first wife was a lie.””

“What happened to Elizabeth?””

Vanessa began to cry.

“He told me she abandoned him. He said she was unstable and left him with nothing. But I found an old newspaper clipping in the storage unit.””

Camilla's heart pounded.

“What did it say?””

“That Elizabeth Caldwell died in a single-car accident.””

The room seemed to close around Camilla.

“When?””

“Eight years ago.””

Camilla slowly sank into a chair.

Eight years.

Daniel had met Camilla less than a year after that.

Vanessa continued, her words tumbling over one another.

“The accident happened on a rainy road outside the city. Her car left the road and struck a tree. The article said there were questions about the vehicle, but the investigation was closed.””

Camilla thought of her failed brakes.

“Was Daniel investigated?””

“I don't know. The clipping didn't say. But the letter in that case was written by Elizabeth before she died.

I saw the envelope. It was addressed to someone named Denise Carter.””

Camilla went utterly still.

“Judge Denise Carter?””

“I don't know. That's what I saw.””

Vanessa's breathing grew ragged.

“Camilla, there's something else. The photograph in the case shows Elizabeth standing beside a little girl.””

Camilla looked toward Lily.

“How old was the girl?””

“About six.””

Silence filled the call.

Then Vanessa whispered the words that made Camilla's blood run cold.

“Camilla, I think Daniel had another daughter before Lily. And I think he was hiding what happened to her mother.””

The call ended.

Camilla remained frozen, the phone pressed against her ear.

Across the room, Lily lifted Bunny and smiled at her mother.

“Mommy? Can we go home tomorrow?””

Camilla forced herself to breathe.

She crossed the room, knelt beside her daughter, and gathered her into her arms.

“We'll find a home where you feel safe, sweetheart. I promise.””

But as she held Lily, her mind returned to the name Vanessa had mentioned.

Elizabeth Caldwell.

The woman Daniel claimed had abandoned him.

The woman whose letter had been hidden in a storage unit.

And Judge Denise Carter, who had recognized something in the evidence before anyone else understood what it meant.

Camilla looked down at Lily's rabbit.

The toy had carried a key.

The key had led to a safe.

And the safe had revealed a past Daniel had spent eight years trying to bury.

Her phone buzzed one final time.

This time, the message came from her attorney.

The investigator has identified the intended recipient of Elizabeth Caldwell's letter. It was Judge Denise Carter.

A second message followed.

The judge has requested that you come in tomorrow morning. She says there is something you need to see before the next hearing.

Camilla stared at the screen.

Then she looked at the little girl sleeping against her shoulder.

For the first time, she understood that the secret hidden in the storage unit might not merely determine the outcome of her divorce.

May you like

It might explain why Daniel had been so desperate to silence his own daughter.

And tomorrow, Judge Carter intended to reveal the one thing that could connect Elizabeth's death to the woman Daniel had married next.
