Chapter 5: Room 214

The second key changed the atmosphere in the courtroom.

The first key had raised questions.

The second suggested that Daniel had deliberately hidden something beyond the reach of his wife, his mistress, and perhaps even his own attorney.

Judge Carter instructed the clerk to document the key's appearance and location. The court made arrangements for the relevant evidence to be preserved, while the officers explained that any search of a private storage unit would require the appropriate legal authorization.

Daniel's attorney, a gray-haired man named Richard Hale, stood beside his client.

“Your Honor, my client will cooperate with any lawful request. However, I must insist that speculation not be treated as established fact.””

“Agreed,” Judge Carter replied.

“The court will not decide what the key opens based on anyone's assumptions.””

Richard nodded.

Daniel looked relieved.

For several seconds, he seemed to believe that his familiar strategy—calm voice, expensive suit, carefully selected words—might still save him.

Then Camilla spoke.

“Mr. Hale, did your client tell you that our daughter's name appears on a financial account he failed to disclose?””

The attorney hesitated.

“I have only just reviewed the document.””

“Did he tell you that the account existed?””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“No,” he admitted.

“He did not.””

Daniel's head snapped toward him.

“Richard.””

The attorney adjusted his glasses.

“You assured me that the financial disclosures were complete.””

“They are.””

“Then explain the account.””

Daniel leaned close and whispered something.

Richard listened, then stepped away from him.

“I cannot advise you properly if you continue withholding information from me.””

Vanessa let out a hollow laugh.

“Welcome to my world.””

Daniel ignored her.

Judge Carter looked toward the bailiff.

“Please escort the parties to separate waiting areas while the court coordinates the next steps. Lily will remain with her mother unless the appropriate authorities advise otherwise.””

Camilla took Lily's hand.

As they stood, Daniel called out.

“Camilla.””

She stopped but did not turn.

“Please. Just give me a minute.””

“Why?””

“I need to explain.””

“You've had months to explain.””

“This isn't what you think.””

She finally faced him.

“Then tell me what it is.””

Daniel looked toward the officers, then toward Vanessa, who was now watching him with open hostility.

He lowered his voice.

“Not here.””

Camilla almost smiled at the familiarity of the phrase.

Not here.

Not now.

Not in front of the people who might ask questions he couldn't control.

“Then I guess I don't need to hear it,” she said.

She walked away with Lily.

In a small private room near the court clerk's office, Camilla sat beside her daughter while a court-approved child specialist arrived to help determine how Lily should be interviewed safely.

The specialist introduced herself as Ms. Bennett and spoke gently.

“Lily, nobody is going to make you answer questions before you're ready. You can take a break whenever you need one.””

Lily looked at Camilla.

“Can Mommy stay?””

“For now, yes,” Ms. Bennett said.

“We'll follow the appropriate process and make sure you feel safe.””

Camilla stroked Lily's braids.

“You can tell the truth in your own time, sweetheart.””

Lily placed Bunny on the table.

“Bunny knows everything.””

Ms. Bennett smiled softly.

“Sometimes it helps to have something familiar nearby.””

Lily turned the rabbit over in her hands. A loose seam ran along its back, where the fabric had begun to separate.

Camilla frowned.

“Baby, when did Bunny get torn?””

Lily immediately covered the seam.

“Don't open him.””

“I'm not going to.””

“Daddy said not to.””

Camilla felt a chill move through her.

“Did Daddy say why?””

Lily shook her head.

“He said Bunny was special. He said if I ever had to leave the house, I had to take him with me.””

Ms. Bennett exchanged a brief glance with Camilla.

“Lily, do you remember when your daddy gave you the rabbit?””

“On the day he told me to hide the key.””

Camilla's fingers stopped moving.

“When was that?””

Lily thought carefully.

“Before the big rain.””

The big rain.

Camilla remembered it immediately.

A violent storm had swept through their neighborhood one evening in late summer. The power had gone out, and Daniel had taken Lily downstairs while Camilla searched for candles.

She remembered returning to find Daniel kneeling beside Lily, holding a stuffed rabbit that Camilla had never seen before.

He had said it was a gift from his office.

At the time, she had barely looked at it.

Now she stared at the rabbit's worn gray ears.

“Did Daddy put something inside Bunny?”” she asked.

Lily nodded.

“He said it was a treasure.””

Ms. Bennett gently intervened.

“Lily, we don't want to make guesses about what might be inside the toy. If the officers believe it's relevant, they can examine it safely and properly.””

Camilla agreed.

She wasn't going to cut open her daughter's favorite toy based on a suspicion.

But the possibility that the rabbit had been used to hide something made her stomach twist.

A knock sounded at the door.

One of the officers entered with permission from the specialist.

“Mrs. Caldwell, we've received preliminary confirmation that the storage facility exists. Investigators are working to determine the lawful steps needed to access unit 214.””

“Can they tell what's inside?””

“Not yet.””

Camilla looked at the second key, now secured in an evidence envelope.

“Do you know why my daughter had it?””

“We're still establishing that.””

The officer paused.

“There's one additional matter. The storage facility's records indicate that the unit was rented under a business name connected to Mr. Caldwell. The rental agreement was recently renewed.””

“When?””

“Four days ago.””

Camilla stared at him.

Four days.

Daniel had known the divorce hearing was approaching. He had known that the financial discrepancies were being examined. And he had renewed the storage unit shortly before Lily appeared in court with a key he claimed never to have given her.

“Thank you,” Camilla said quietly.

After the officer left, Ms. Bennett continued speaking with Lily, careful not to suggest answers or press her for details.

Camilla sat very still.

She thought about the papers Lily had mentioned. The account in her daughter's name. The garage. The failed brakes.

And the phrase Vanessa had let slip.

He told me it was supposed to be an accident.

Camilla pressed a hand to her belly.

She had spent months believing that she had simply lost her husband to another woman.

Now she wondered whether Daniel had been trying to remove her from his life in a much more permanent way.

A few hours later, after the court had completed its initial proceedings, Camilla was escorted to a private office where Richard Hale had requested a brief conversation with her attorney present.

Daniel was not there.

Richard looked exhausted.

“Mrs. Caldwell, I want to be very clear that I cannot disclose privileged communications from my client. However, I have discovered that certain documents I relied upon may not have been complete.””

“Which documents?””

“The financial disclosures, among others.””

“Did you know about the account in Lily's name?””

“No.””

“Did you know about the storage unit?””

“No.””

“Did you know about my car?””

Richard looked at her carefully.

“What happened to your car?””

Camilla described the incident at the intersection, including the sudden failure of the brakes and Daniel's explanation afterward.

The attorney's face grew grave.

“I was not aware of that incident.””

“Would you have continued representing him if you had known?””

“I would have investigated the facts and assessed my professional obligations. I cannot answer hypotheticals about evidence I had never seen.””

Camilla appreciated the honesty, even if it offered little comfort.

“Then tell me one thing,” she said.

“Why would Daniel put money in an account for Lily if he planned to take everything from me?””

Richard folded his hands.

“I don't know.””

She watched him for a moment.

“Do you think he was hiding money from me?””

“I think the records need to be examined before anyone reaches a conclusion.””

He slid a copy of a document across the desk.

It was a transfer authorization bearing Camilla's name.

Her signature appeared at the bottom.

She stared at it.

“That isn't my signature.””

Richard's expression tightened.

“You're certain?””

“I sign my name the same way I've signed it for fifteen years. Look at the C. Look at the way the last name slopes. I didn't sign this.””

The transfer authorization showed a substantial sum moved from their joint account into a company she had never heard of.

Camilla felt the room grow cold.

“Who submitted this?””

“Mr. Caldwell's office.””

“Then he forged my signature.””

“I cannot make that determination without an appropriate examination. But your objection is significant and should be documented.””

Camilla pushed the paper away.

“Why would he do this?””

Richard did not answer.

He didn't need to.

Money. Control. The house. The business.

And whatever was hidden in room 214.

When Camilla left the office, Lily was asleep against a chair, her head resting on Bunny. The child had cried herself into exhaustion.

Camilla knelt beside her.

“I'll take you home soon,” she whispered.

Lily opened her eyes.

“Not the big house?””

Camilla hesitated.

“No, sweetheart. Somewhere safe.””

“Will Daddy come?””

“I don't know.””

Lily hugged the rabbit tighter.

“I don't want him to find Bunny.””

Camilla's heart began pounding.

“Why, baby?””

Lily looked toward the closed door.

“Because Bunny has the other paper.””

Camilla froze.

“What other paper?””

May you like

Lily carefully lifted the rabbit and pointed at the loose seam along its back.

“The paper Daddy said would make Mommy disappear.””
