Chapter 6: The Woman Who Came Back
I stood there staring at the woman in front of me, unable to move.
My mind knew what I was seeing.
My heart refused to accept it.
Emily.
My wife.
Maya’s mother.
The woman whose funeral I attended.
The woman whose photographs I kept because they were the only pieces of her I had left.
She was standing on my porch.
Alive.
Older.
Exhausted.
But alive.
“Marcus,” she whispered.
My hand tightened around the doorframe.
Behind her stood Doctor Harris, holding a thick brown folder against his chest.
And suddenly I understood.
This wasn’t just a reunion.
This was evidence.
Emily took one step forward.
“I know you hate me right now.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know what I feel.””
That was the truth.
Anger.
Relief.
Betrayal.
Love.
Everything crashed together until I couldn’t separate one emotion from another.
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted to come back.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
She looked down.
“Because I was scared.””
A laugh escaped me.
Not a happy one.
“Scared?””
I looked behind me at Claire.
“She was scared?””
Emily followed my eyes.
The second she saw Claire, her face changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
Real fear.
Claire stepped backward.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Emily’s voice shook.
“You know exactly why I’m here.””
Claire looked at Doctor Harris.
“What are you doing with her?””
Doctor Harris answered calmly.
“Making sure the truth finally reaches the people who need to hear it.””
I looked at him.
“Doctor, what is in that file?””
He opened it slowly.
“Medical records. Psychological evaluations. And evidence collected over the past six years.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“Collected by who?””
“By Emily.””
The room became silent.
Emily looked at me.
“I didn’t disappear because I wanted to leave you.””
I swallowed.
“Then what happened?””
She stepped inside.
And for the first time in six years, we sat in the same room.
The same house.
The same place where I had built a life without her.
“Six years ago,” Emily began, “I found out Claire wasn’t who she said she was.””
I frowned.
“She was your friend.””
Emily nodded.
“That’s what I thought.””
She looked at Claire.
“But she was studying me.””
Claire’s expression hardened.
“Don’t make me sound like some monster.””
Emily looked at her.
“You became one.””
The words were quiet.
But they cut deeper than shouting.
Emily continued.
“After Maya’s diagnosis problems started. She was having nightmares. She was afraid to be alone with Claire.””
My heart dropped.
“Maya never told me that.””
“Because she tried.””
Emily looked at me.
“She told you once.””
I froze.
“When?””
“The night before my accident.””
I searched my memory.
Six years ago.
Maya had been six.
She had come into my room crying.
I remembered.
I remembered her saying:
“Daddy, I don’t like when Claire closes the door.””
At the time, I thought she meant she wanted attention.
I told her:
“Claire loves you. Give her a chance.””
The memory hit me like a punch.
I had ignored my own daughter.
Emily saw my face.
“Marcus.””
I looked away.
“I should have listened.””
“You didn’t know.””
“I should have.””
Claire suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
It was a bitter, broken sound.
“You two are unbelievable.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“You’re sitting here acting like I’m the only reason this family fell apart.””
Emily stepped forward.
“Because you are.””
“No,” Claire snapped.
Her calm mask was gone.
“I was the only person who saw the truth.””
“What truth?”” I asked.
Claire looked at me.
“That Emily was leaving.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“She was going to take Maya and disappear.””
Emily shook her head.
“That’s a lie.””
Claire pointed at her.
“You wrote the letter.””
Emily went silent.
I looked between them.
“What letter?””
Claire smiled sadly.
“The one Emily wrote before she died.””
My heart stopped.
“She wrote a letter?””
Emily looked shocked.
“I never wrote anything saying I wanted to leave.””
Claire’s smile disappeared.
“Then I guess you should see it.””
She walked toward the cabinet.
I immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Claire stopped.
For the first time, she looked afraid of me.
“Marcus…”
“Where is it?””
She didn’t answer.
Doctor Harris opened the folder.
“I already have a copy.””
He pulled out a paper.
“My team found this in storage.””
I took it.
The handwriting looked like Emily’s.
My hands shook as I read.
Marcus,
I’m sorry.
I don’t think I can stay anymore.
You and Maya deserve someone better than me.
Please don’t look for me.
I couldn’t breathe.
Emily looked at the letter.
Then at Claire.
“That’s not mine.””
Claire whispered:
“It is.””
“No.””
Emily stepped closer.
“I never wrote that.””
Doctor Harris pointed to the bottom.
“Look at the signature.””
I did.
And then I noticed something.
Something small.
Something I should have seen.
The signature was almost perfect.
Almost.
But Emily always crossed the letter “t” in her name with a long line.
This signature didn’t.
It was copied.
I looked at Claire.
“You forged this.””
Her face changed.
And that was when I knew.
She had no more lies left.
The next morning, the police would arrive.
The truth would finally come out.
But before anyone could move, Emily grabbed my arm.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
Her face was terrified.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
She looked upstairs.
At Maya’s room.
“Claire wasn’t trying to replace me.””
My heart sank.
“Then what was she trying to do?””
May you like
Emily whispered:
“She was trying to become the only person Maya trusted.””
