Chapter 2: The Man Who Made the Manager Go Pale

I had seen my father angry before.

But never like that.

The black SUV remained outside while two other dark vehicles pulled in behind it.

A hotel doorman hurried toward the entrance.

Two security officers who had previously been standing near the gaming floor suddenly moved toward the reception area.

Inside the lobby, the atmosphere began changing.

Victoria noticed it first.

She adjusted her pink dress and glanced toward the entrance.

"What's all that about?"" she asked.

Richard looked at his radio.

"I don't know.""

Then the automatic glass doors slid open.

My father walked inside.

Marcus Brooks was sixty-one years old, six feet tall, with a close-cropped silver beard and a calm expression that usually made people feel comfortable.

He wore a dark navy suit, a white shirt, and a simple gold watch.

There was nothing flashy about him.

But the way people reacted when he entered that lobby told a different story.

The hotel's director of operations, a man named Thomas Reed, hurried away from the reception desk.

"Mr. Brooks!""

My father didn't stop.

He looked straight at me.

"Danielle.""

My throat tightened.

"Dad.""

He crossed the lobby in seconds.

When he reached me, he didn't look at Victoria.

He didn't look at Richard.

He dropped to one knee beside me and gently touched my shoulder.

"Let me see your face, sweetheart.""

I tried to smile.

"I'm okay.""

He studied the redness spreading across my cheek.

His jaw tightened.

"Who did this?""

I looked toward Victoria.

My father followed my eyes.

Then he looked at Richard.

"Who is the manager here?""

Richard stepped forward immediately.

"Mr. Brooks. Richard Coleman. Guest services manager.""

My father stood.

"Did you witness what happened to my daughter?""

Richard cleared his throat.

"Sir, there seems to have been a misunderstanding.""

"A misunderstanding?""

"Yes. There was a disturbance involving your daughter and another guest.""

My father glanced at me.

"Danielle, did you cause a disturbance?""

I shook my head.

"No, Dad. I was waiting for you.""

He looked back at Richard.

"Did my daughter strike anyone?""

Richard hesitated.

"No, sir.""

"Did she threaten anyone?""

"No.""

"Did she damage hotel property?""

Richard shifted his weight.

"Not that I'm aware of.""

My father paused.

"Then explain why she's sitting here with a bruised cheek, holding a crying newborn, while you're telling her to leave.""

Richard opened his mouth.

Victoria stepped forward.

"Excuse me. I don't know who you are, but this woman was behaving inappropriately.""

My father turned toward her.

"You're the woman who hit my daughter?""

Victoria raised her chin.

"I didn't hit her. I was trying to get her attention.""

I watched my father's expression.

He didn't shout.

He didn't move toward her.

He simply looked at her as if he were giving her one final opportunity to tell the truth.

"You're saying you didn't slap her?""

Victoria folded her arms.

"Absolutely not.""

My father nodded slowly.

Then he turned toward Thomas Reed, the director of operations.

"Thomas, do you have working cameras in this lobby?""

Thomas immediately nodded.

"Yes, sir. Several.""

"Good. Preserve every recording from the last hour. Every camera. The entrance, reception, elevators, and surrounding corridors.""

Thomas looked toward Richard.

"Richard, contact surveillance immediately.""

Richard appeared uncomfortable.

"Sir, I think we're getting ahead of ourselves.""

My father didn't even look at him.

"Are we?""

He gently took Amara from my arms after asking whether I was comfortable letting him hold her.

My daughter was still crying.

He tucked her carefully against his chest, supporting her head.

"Hello, little princess," he whispered.

His voice softened.

Then he looked at Thomas again.

"Please arrange for a medical professional to examine my daughter and granddaughter.""

Thomas nodded.

"Of course, Mr. Brooks.""

Victoria laughed.

"This is ridiculous. You're acting like you've bought the hotel.""

The words caused several people nearby to turn.

My father looked at her.

"No, ma'am. I'm acting like a father whose daughter was assaulted in front of her newborn.""

Richard stepped between them slightly.

"Mr. Brooks, perhaps we should discuss this privately.""

My father looked at him.

"Why privately?""

"To avoid upsetting the other guests.""

My father glanced around the lobby.

Several guests were already filming.

"Interesting. You were perfectly comfortable humiliating my daughter in front of everyone. But now that I'm here, you want privacy?""

Richard's face reddened.

"That's not what I meant.""

"Then explain what you meant.""

Before Richard could answer, Thomas returned with a woman wearing a dark business suit.

She introduced herself as Angela Morris, the hotel's general manager.

"Mr. Brooks," she said, extending her hand.

"I'm Angela Morris. I sincerely apologize for what happened.""

My father didn't take her hand immediately.

"Did you know my daughter was asked to leave?""

Angela looked confused.

"No, sir.""

"Did you know she was struck?""

"No.""

"Then perhaps you should find out why your manager made that decision.""

Angela turned toward Richard.

"Richard?""

He swallowed.

"Ms. Morris, the situation wasn't as straightforward as it appears.""

My father gently handed Amara back to me.

Then he pulled out his phone.

"Thomas, have the surveillance team send the footage to Angela and the hotel's legal department. I want an independent record of everything.""

Angela nodded.

"Absolutely.""

Victoria rolled her eyes.

"Are we really going to waste everyone's time over a little argument?""

My father slowly turned.

"A little argument?""

"Yes. People bump into each other. Things happen.""

I finally spoke.

"She didn't bump into me. She slapped me.""

Victoria glared.

"Watch your mouth.""

My father stepped slightly closer to me.

"Don't speak to my daughter that way.""

Victoria laughed.

"Your daughter needs to learn how to behave in places like this.""

For the first time, my father smiled.

It wasn't a friendly smile.

"Places like this?""

Victoria looked at him.

"Yes. This is a luxury hotel. Not a public playground.""

My father nodded.

"You're absolutely right. This is a business that depends on people being treated with dignity, regardless of how much money they have.""

Then he turned to Angela.

"Would you mind explaining who owns the operating company responsible for this property?""

Angela looked uncomfortable.

"Mr. Brooks, I believe that's a conversation we should have in the executive office.""

My father shook his head.

"No. Not yet.""

He looked toward the reception desk.

"Bring the ownership records and the current management structure down here.""

Angela stared at him.

"Here?""

"Yes.""

Richard's expression changed.

"Why would you need those documents?""

My father looked directly at him.

"Because I want to know whether the people responsible for running this property understand the standards they're supposed to uphold.""

Victoria suddenly seemed less certain.

She looked at Richard.

"What's going on?""

Richard didn't answer.

My father turned back toward me.

"Danielle, how long were you waiting before this happened?""

"Maybe ten minutes.""

"Did anyone ask you for identification?""

"No.""

"Did anyone tell you that you weren't allowed to stand here?""

"No. She just walked up and started insulting me.""

He nodded.

"All right.""

Angela spoke softly.

"Mr. Brooks, the medical team is on its way.""

"Thank you.""

For a moment, the lobby became quiet.

Then my father's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

The name displayed was David Whitmore.

I recognized it immediately.

David was my father's longtime attorney.

My father answered.

"David.""

He listened for several seconds.

Then his expression became serious.

"You're sure?""

Another pause.

"Good. Bring the documents down.""

He ended the call.

I looked at him.

"What is it, Dad?""

He rested a hand on my shoulder.

"Nothing you need to worry about right now.""

But Victoria had overheard the name.

She looked at Richard.

Then at Angela.

Then back at my father.

"Who exactly are you?""

My father didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward the elevators.

A man carrying a leather portfolio was approaching.

It was David Whitmore.

He stopped beside my father and whispered something.

My father's eyes narrowed.

Then David opened the portfolio.

The first page contained a document with the hotel's corporate ownership structure.

Angela leaned forward to read it.

Her face slowly lost its color.

And when she looked up at my father, she spoke in a voice barely above a whisper.

"Mr. Brooks... are you saying that you...""

My father raised one hand.

"Let's wait until everyone responsible is here.""

Then he looked at Richard.

May you like

"And make sure Ms. Hale doesn't leave.""

Victoria's smile disappeared.
