Chapter 7: The Man Who Walked Into His Own Trap

Daniel Cross walked into the lobby as if he owned the building.

His black Italian suit was perfectly tailored. A silver watch flashed beneath his sleeve, and his polished shoes barely made a sound against the marble floor.

He was in his late fifties, with neatly combed gray hair and the confident expression of a man who had spent decades making other people nervous.

Behind him walked two men carrying leather briefcases.

Daniel stopped a few feet from my father.

"Marcus. It's been a long evening.""

My father didn't offer his hand.

"Apparently.""

Daniel glanced toward me.

"Danielle. Congratulations on the baby. I wish we'd met under better circumstances.""

I tightened my arms around Amara.

"Do you know why a woman slapped me tonight?""

Daniel gave a small, sympathetic smile.

"I heard there was an unfortunate incident.""

"An unfortunate incident?""

He nodded.

"These things happen in busy hotels.""

My father stepped forward.

"Not when someone has been paying employees to conceal complaints.""

Daniel's smile disappeared for half a second.

Then it returned.

"I have no idea what you're talking about.""

David Whitmore opened his portfolio.

"Perhaps we should discuss the consulting payments made to Hale Hospitality Consulting.""

Daniel looked at him.

"David. Still working late, I see.""

"Somebody has to.""

Daniel chuckled.

Then he turned toward my father.

"Marcus, I suggest we discuss this privately. The guests don't need to be involved in corporate disagreements.""

My father looked around the lobby.

"You're right. Guests shouldn't have to witness corporate misconduct.""

Daniel frowned.

"That's a serious accusation.""

"Then let's establish the facts.""

Daniel glanced toward the security supervisor.

"Why are all these people standing around?""

Angela answered.

"Because there has been an alleged assault, an investigation into improper payments, and several unresolved employee complaints.""

Daniel sighed.

"Angela, you seem to be misunderstanding the situation.""

Angela didn't move.

"I understand exactly what the records show.""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Be careful.""

My father immediately stepped between them.

"Don't speak to her that way.""

Daniel smiled.

"Still protecting everyone, Marcus?""

"Only people who deserve protection.""

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then Daniel looked at the document in David's hands.

"I understand there are concerns about a proposed transaction.""

My father nodded.

"That's one way to describe it.""

"An internal restructuring.""

"Using my signature?""

Daniel spread his hands.

"Your office authorized the preliminary documentation.""

"My office didn't.""

"Then perhaps someone made an administrative error.""

David stepped forward.

"The digital records show that the document was accessed using credentials associated with three individuals. We have not yet established who used them.""

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly. Which is why I suggest everyone stops making accusations.""

My father studied him.

"Then you'll have no objection to an independent forensic audit.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"An audit would be unnecessary.""

"Why?""

"Because there is nothing to find.""

My father nodded slowly.

"Then it should be easy.""

Daniel looked toward his assistants.

One of them opened a briefcase.

"Marcus, I brought something that might help resolve this.""

He removed a thick envelope.

My father didn't take it.

"What is it?""

"A proposal.""

"About what?""

"Your hospitality holdings.""

David looked at the envelope.

"Is this related to the proposed acquisition?""

Daniel smiled.

"It's an alternative arrangement. One that would protect the company and avoid unnecessary disruption.""

My father finally accepted the envelope.

He opened it.

Inside were several pages outlining a proposed transfer of certain management rights to Daniel's investment group.

The document included a financial offer.

A generous one.

But there was a problem.

My father wasn't selling.

He looked up.

"Why would I transfer management rights to you?""

Daniel leaned closer.

"Because you're getting older, Marcus. You have a family now. Perhaps it's time to simplify your responsibilities.""

My father laughed softly.

"Is that what this is about?""

Daniel's expression remained calm.

"Business is business.""

My father closed the envelope.

"Then let's talk business.""

Daniel nodded.

"Good.""

"How much did you pay Richard Coleman?""

Daniel's face changed.

"Excuse me?""

"How much?""

"I didn't pay Richard anything.""

David held up the accounting report.

"Several payments were authorized through a discretionary account. Some were routed through Ms. Hale's consulting company.""

Daniel looked at the document.

Then he turned toward Victoria.

She was standing near the security desk.

"Victoria," he said sharply.

"I thought you had this handled.""

The entire lobby went silent.

Victoria stared at him.

"Don't put this on me.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You assured me the complaints were closed.""

Victoria shook her head.

"You told me the company would protect us.""

My father looked at David.

David quietly wrote something down.

Daniel realized his mistake.

He looked around.

Then he smiled again.

"You're twisting a private conversation.""

The police officer approached.

"Mr. Cross, we need to speak with you regarding some financial records.""

Daniel turned.

"Am I being accused of something?""

"We're gathering information.""

"Then contact my attorney.""

"You're welcome to do that.""

Daniel looked at my father.

"This is becoming ridiculous.""

My father nodded.

"Agreed. Which is why I'm going to ask you one question.""

Daniel sighed.

"What?""

"Did you authorize the transfer document bearing my daughter's husband's signature?""

Daniel stared at him.

Then he looked at me.

"Your husband?""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Yes. James.""

Daniel smiled.

"Ah. James.""

My father stepped closer.

"Answer the question.""

Daniel adjusted his cuff.

"James has been involved in matters he doesn't fully understand.""

I stood up.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Your husband has been asking questions about transactions that are none of his concern.""

"He's my husband. What did you do?""

Daniel ignored me.

My father moved closer.

"Don't speak around my daughter. Answer her.""

Daniel finally looked directly at me.

"James discovered some documents that were never meant to be circulated.""

"Why?""

"Because they involve confidential negotiations.""

I shook my head.

"Then why was his signature forged?""

Daniel's smile vanished.

"Forged is a very strong word.""

My father spoke quietly.

"Careful, Daniel.""

Daniel turned toward him.

"You want to make this personal?""

"It became personal when my daughter was assaulted and your associates tried to intimidate her.""

Daniel looked at Victoria.

Then at Richard.

Then back at my father.

"Marcus, you're making a serious mistake.""

My father smiled.

"Perhaps. But I'm not the one who walked into a building filled with cameras.""

Daniel's eyes flickered toward the security supervisor.

The supervisor nodded.

"All lobby recordings are preserved, sir.""

Daniel looked increasingly uncomfortable.

Then David's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

And immediately turned toward my father.

"Marcus, the forensic team found something.""

"What?""

"The transfer document was created on a computer registered to Daniel Cross's investment office.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"That's impossible.""

David continued.

"And the signature image was copied from an earlier corporate authorization.""

My father looked at Daniel.

"Still an administrative error?""

Daniel said nothing.

The police officer stepped closer.

"Mr. Cross, we'd like you to accompany us for an interview.""

Daniel laughed.

"You cannot be serious.""

"Sir, we're requesting your cooperation.""

Daniel looked toward his assistants.

One of them quietly stepped backward.

The other closed his briefcase.

Then Daniel turned toward my father.

"You think you've won?""

My father shook his head.

"No. I think we've finally started asking the right questions.""

Daniel was escorted toward the side corridor.

Victoria watched him go.

Then she looked at me.

Her face was pale.

I thought she might finally apologize.

Instead, she whispered:

"You still don't understand.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

She stepped closer.

"Daniel isn't the person who started this.""

My father turned.

"Who did?""

Victoria looked at me.

Then she spoke three words.

"Your husband did.""

My heart stopped.

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

It was James.

I answered immediately.

"James!""

His voice sounded exhausted.

"Danielle, I'm sorry.""

"Where are you?""

"At the airport.""

"Why did you disappear?""

"I didn't disappear. Someone took my phone while I was speaking to you.""

I looked at my father.

James continued.

"Danielle, there's something I haven't told you.""

"What?""

"I knew Daniel Cross was trying to take control of your father's company.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why didn't you tell us?""

"Because I thought I could stop him without involving your father.""

My father reached for the phone.

"James, what did you sign?""

James was silent.

Then he answered.

"Nothing willingly.""

"What does that mean?""

"I signed a confidentiality agreement six months ago. I thought it was connected to a legitimate financial review.""

David immediately looked up.

My father asked:

"Who gave it to you?""

James swallowed.

"Victoria.""

I looked at the woman standing across the lobby.

She was smiling again.

James continued.

"And Danielle, that agreement contains something else.""

"What?""

"If I disclose certain information, they can claim I violated the contract and sue me.""

My father looked at David.

David's expression became serious.

Then James said:

"Marcus, the person who gave Victoria access to the company wasn't Daniel.""

A pause.

"It was someone inside your family.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

My father slowly looked toward me.

And behind us, David opened a second folder.

There was a name on the first page.

A name I recognized.

May you like

My father's younger brother.

*Terrence Brooks.*
