Chapter 3: The Name on the Ownership Papers

The general manager looked as though she had suddenly forgotten how to breathe.

David Whitmore stood beside my father with the leather portfolio open.

Richard kept staring at the documents.

Victoria, however, appeared irritated.

"This is absurd," she announced.

"I have a reservation upstairs, and I'm not standing here all night.""

My father looked at her.

"Nobody is asking you to stand here all night.""

"Good. Because I have dinner reservations.""

"You're welcome to wait for the police if you prefer.""

Victoria's mouth fell open.

"The police?""

"Yes.""

She looked toward Richard.

"Tell him this is unnecessary.""

Richard rubbed his forehead.

"Ms. Hale, please cooperate.""

Victoria stared at him.

"Excuse me?""

Angela stepped forward.

"Ms. Hale, we need to establish exactly what happened.""

Victoria threw her hands into the air.

"I already told you! She walked into me, I asked her to move, and she started making a scene.""

I looked at her.

"That's a lie.""

She pointed a finger at me.

"Don't you dare call me a liar.""

My father immediately spoke.

"Lower your hand.""

Victoria dropped it.

For the first time since the incident, she seemed unable to find a quick response.

A nurse from the hotel's medical team arrived with a small examination kit.

She introduced herself as Patricia.

"Miss Brooks, may I examine your cheek?""

I nodded.

She checked the swelling and asked whether I felt dizzy or had any other symptoms.

Then she examined Amara carefully while I held her.

"She's crying because she was startled, but I'm not seeing an immediate concern," Patricia said.

"However, given her age, I recommend a pediatric evaluation if the crying continues or anything seems unusual.""

My father nodded.

"Please arrange that.""

I looked at him.

"Dad, I don't want to make this bigger than it needs to be.""

He turned toward me.

"Sweetheart, someone put their hands on you while you were holding my granddaughter. You're not making anything bigger. You're asking people to take responsibility.""

I looked down at Amara.

Her little fingers had curled around the fabric of my blouse.

I kissed her forehead.

"I just wanted to spend the evening with you.""

My father gently brushed a tear from my cheek.

"And you still will.""

Then David stepped forward.

"Marcus, the documents are ready.""

Angela looked toward the portfolio.

"May I?""

David handed her a copy.

She read the first page.

Then the second.

Her lips parted.

Richard leaned closer.

"What is it?""

Angela looked at him.

"Richard, stop talking.""

He froze.

She turned back to the document.

The hotel was operated by a subsidiary of a larger hospitality group.

That group had recently undergone a major restructuring.

And the controlling investment entity was Brooks Hospitality Holdings.

My father's company.

I stared at the papers.

I knew he owned hotels and commercial properties.

But I had never imagined that this particular property was among them.

My father stepped beside Angela.

"Please read the ownership section aloud.""

Angela swallowed.

"The controlling investment entity is Brooks Hospitality Holdings, with Marcus Brooks listed as the principal beneficial owner.""

Victoria blinked.

Then she laughed nervously.

"That's supposed to impress me?""

Nobody answered.

Angela continued reading.

"The current operating agreement also identifies Mr. Brooks as the designated executive authority for major management and compliance decisions.""

Richard took a step backward.

My father looked at him.

"Now do you understand why I asked you to preserve the footage?""

Richard's face had become pale.

"Mr. Brooks, I had no idea.""

My father nodded.

"That is precisely the problem.""

Victoria looked between them.

"Wait. You're telling me this man owns the hotel?""

Angela corrected her.

"Mr. Brooks is the controlling owner through the investment company.""

Victoria's mouth tightened.

She suddenly looked at my blouse.

Then at my diaper tote.

Then at my face.

Her voice became softer.

"Well, I obviously didn't know.""

My father looked at her.

"Would that have changed anything?""

She said nothing.

He continued.

"If my daughter had been wearing a designer dress and carrying a luxury handbag, would you have treated her differently?""

Victoria looked away.

"I was just having a difficult evening.""

My father nodded slowly.

"So was my daughter. She was caring for a newborn. But she didn't slap anybody.""

A few guests nearby exchanged glances.

One man who had been filming lowered his phone slightly.

Angela stepped forward.

"Mr. Brooks, I want to apologize on behalf of the hotel. This behavior is completely unacceptable.""

My father looked at her.

"An apology is a beginning, Angela. It isn't a solution.""

"I understand.""

"Then here's what I want.""

He pointed toward the reception desk.

"First, preserve every relevant security recording. No editing. No deleting. No selective sharing.""

Angela nodded.

"Agreed.""

"Second, I want a complete incident report identifying everyone who witnessed this event and every employee who responded.""

"Of course.""

"Third, I want the security team to document the physical condition of my daughter and arrange the appropriate medical follow-up.""

Angela looked toward Patricia.

"That is already underway.""

"Good.""

Then he turned toward Richard.

"And fourth, I want to know why you chose to dismiss the victim before even reviewing the evidence.""

Richard looked down.

"Mr. Brooks, I made a mistake.""

My father remained silent.

Richard continued.

"I was trying to resolve the disturbance quickly.""

"By asking the person who had been assaulted to leave?""

"I didn't have all the information.""

"Did you ask for it?""

Richard didn't answer.

My father waited.

Finally, Richard whispered, "No, sir.""

Angela closed the portfolio.

"Richard, I am placing you on immediate administrative leave pending a formal investigation.""

His head snapped up.

"Ms. Morris?""

"You heard me.""

"But I—"

"Your decision to dismiss a guest without investigating an alleged assault is unacceptable.""

Victoria suddenly interrupted.

"This is getting ridiculous. You're going to punish employees because of one woman's story?""

My father turned toward her.

"No. We're investigating what happened because there are cameras, witnesses, and a woman with a visible injury.""

Victoria looked at the guests.

"Somebody needs to tell him he's being unreasonable.""

Nobody stepped forward.

Then the hotel security supervisor approached Angela.

"Ma'am, surveillance has confirmed that the lobby cameras captured the entire incident.""

Angela nodded.

"Have you reviewed the footage?""

"Yes.""

"And?""

The supervisor glanced at me.

Then at my father.

"Ms. Brooks was standing beside the reception area. Ms.

Hale approached her, exchanged words with her, and struck her across the face. Ms. Brooks fell while protecting the infant.""

Victoria's expression changed.

"That's not what happened!""

The supervisor continued.

"The footage also shows Mr. Coleman arriving afterward and directing Ms. Brooks to leave without first interviewing the other guests or reviewing the incident.""

Richard closed his eyes.

Victoria took a step toward the supervisor.

"You're leaving out the part where she provoked me!""

The supervisor remained calm.

"The video has no audio, ma'am. We are also collecting statements from witnesses.""

My father looked at David.

"Make sure the footage is preserved and that the appropriate authorities receive it.""

David nodded.

"Already arranged.""

Victoria's confidence was disappearing.

She glanced toward the entrance.

Then toward the elevators.

"Can I go now?""

Angela answered.

"Not until we've completed the initial incident documentation and spoken with the responding officers. You're not being detained by hotel staff, but we are requesting that you remain available and cooperate.""

Victoria's face turned red.

"This is harassment!""

My father shook his head.

"No, ma'am. It's accountability.""

A moment later, two uniformed police officers entered the lobby.

One approached Angela.

"Good evening. We received a report of an alleged assault.""

Angela nodded.

"Yes, officer. We have surveillance footage and several witnesses.""

The officer turned toward me.

"Ma'am, are you the person who was struck?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

"Are you willing to provide a statement?""

"Yes.""

My father stood beside me.

"I'll arrange for her attorney to be present if she wants one.""

I looked at him.

"Thank you, Dad.""

The officer began taking my details.

Victoria was speaking rapidly to the second officer.

"I never intended to hurt anyone. It was a misunderstanding. I barely touched her.""

The first officer glanced at the surveillance supervisor.

"Is the footage available?""

"Yes, officer.""

"Good. We'll need a copy.""

While they worked, my phone vibrated.

A message from my husband appeared.

Danielle, are you okay? Your father just called me. I'm getting on the next flight.

I smiled faintly.

For the first time that evening, I felt like I could breathe.

My father noticed.

"Everything all right?""

I nodded.

"James is coming.""

"Good.""

He looked at Amara, who was finally quiet.

Then he looked back at the reception desk.

"Danielle, there's something else you should know.""

I frowned.

"What?""

He glanced toward David.

David closed the portfolio and pulled out another document.

My father lowered his voice.

"When I learned you were coming to Las Vegas, I made arrangements for something.""

"What kind of arrangements?""

He hesitated.

Then he handed me the document.

At the top was the name of a new charitable foundation.

Below it was a photograph of a building I recognized.

It was the old community maternity center where I had volunteered before giving birth.

My eyes widened.

"Dad...""

He smiled gently.

"I've been working on acquiring that building and reopening it as a free maternal and newborn care center.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I wanted to surprise you.""

I looked at the document again.

My name was printed beneath the words:

Founding Director: Danielle Brooks.

I covered my mouth.

"Dad, I can't believe this.""

He placed his hand over mine.

"You've spent your life caring for people who needed help. I wanted to build something that would let you keep doing that.""

I looked at the photograph.

Then at my daughter.

Then at the woman standing several feet away, still arguing with the police.

Something inside me became very clear.

My father hadn't come to Las Vegas to rescue a helpless woman.

He had come to spend time with his daughter.

And I didn't want the worst moment of my life to become the thing that defined that evening.

I folded the document carefully.

"Thank you, Dad.""

He kissed my forehead.

"You're welcome, sweetheart.""

Then Angela approached us one more time.

"Mr. Brooks, there's something you need to see.""

She held out a tablet.

The screen displayed the lobby surveillance footage.

But beneath the video was a second notification.

The hotel's internal incident system had automatically recorded an earlier complaint involving Victoria Hale.

Angela looked at my father.

"Apparently, this isn't the first time she's been involved in an incident with another guest.""

My father studied the screen.

Then his eyes narrowed.

"How many complaints?""

Angela hesitated.

"Three.""

I stared at her.

"Three?""

She nodded.

"And all three were closed without disciplinary action.""

My father looked toward Richard.

Richard was standing beside the security desk, his face drained of color.

Then David leaned closer and whispered something to my father.

My father's expression hardened.

"Danielle," he said quietly, "I think there's more to this than a woman losing her temper.""

He turned the tablet toward me.

The first complaint had been filed six months earlier.

The second, three months earlier.

And the third had been filed just two weeks before my arrival.

All three involved guests who had described the same behavior.

All three had mentioned Richard Coleman.

And all three had been dismissed.

I looked at my father.

"Why would he keep protecting her?""

My father stared at the screen for several seconds.

Then he turned toward Angela.

"Find out who authorized those closures.""

Angela nodded.

"Immediately.""

But before she could walk away, David's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and slowly looked toward my father.

"Marcus," he said, "you need to see this.""

He turned the screen around.

It showed an email sent from Richard Coleman's work account.

The subject line read:

*SPECIAL GUEST ARRANGEMENT — VICTORIA HALE.*

And beneath it was a payment authorization bearing Richard's digital approval.

My father stared at the screen.

May you like

Then he said four words that made the entire lobby go silent.

"Now we know why.""
