Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Whitmore Partnership

"You're telling me they submitted false information during the partnership review?""

Richard Carter's voice carried across the lobby.

Daniel Whitmore stood motionless, his phone still pressed against his ear.

Vanessa looked at her husband.

"What is he talking about?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Richard listened for another few seconds before speaking again.

"Send the documents to my office immediately. I want the original submissions, the financial disclosures, and the correspondence with their legal team.""

He ended the call.

Then he turned toward Daniel.

"Would you care to explain?""

Daniel forced a smile.

"Mr. Carter, I think there has been some misunderstanding between our companies. These things happen during negotiations.""

Richard didn't move.

"Apparently, they happen quite frequently when your company is involved.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Excuse me. My husband is a respected businessman. You cannot accuse him of fraud in front of an audience.""

Richard looked at her.

"I'm not accusing anyone of anything. I'm asking questions based on information provided by my legal department.""

"Then ask those questions privately.""

"Why?""

Vanessa glanced around.

Several guests were still watching.

Some had stopped pretending to check their phones.

Others were whispering near the ballroom entrance.

"Because this is embarrassing," she said.

Richard's expression remained calm.

"Embarrassment is not a reason to avoid accountability.""

Danielle stood beside her father, gently rocking Amara.

She had never seen him this angry.

Richard rarely raised his voice. Even during difficult business meetings, he preferred to listen before making decisions.

But tonight was different.

He wasn't simply the chairman of a hotel company.

He was a father who had watched his daughter stand in front of strangers with a newborn in her arms while people treated her as if she didn't deserve basic dignity.

"Mr. Carter," Daniel began, "perhaps we should discuss the partnership agreement tomorrow.""

Richard shook his head.

"No. We'll discuss the documents tonight.""

He turned toward Patricia.

"Is the conference room available?""

"Yes, sir.""

"Prepare it. I want our legal team, finance director, and compliance officer present.""

Daniel swallowed.

"That's unnecessary.""

Richard looked at him.

"Then you should have no reason to worry.""

Vanessa grabbed her husband's sleeve.

"Daniel, say something!""

Daniel leaned toward her.

"Please stop talking.""

She stared at him.

For the first time that evening, Vanessa seemed genuinely confused.

Meanwhile, Danielle sat down again.

Her cheek was still painful.

Her arms were beginning to ache from holding Amara.

Richard noticed.

"Patricia, please arrange a private room for my daughter and granddaughter. Have a nurse check the baby, and bring Danielle something to eat.""

Danielle immediately shook her head.

"Dad, I'm fine.""

"You haven't eaten, have you?""

She looked away.

Richard sighed.

"That's what I thought.""

He crouched slightly so he could look into her eyes.

"You don't need to stay here and prove anything. I'll handle this.""

Danielle touched his sleeve.

"I want to know why he was so worried about those documents.""

Richard looked at Daniel.

"That's a fair question.""

Patricia approached with a tablet.

"Mr. Carter, our compliance officer has just sent the preliminary report.""

Richard accepted it.

His eyes moved across the screen.

Then he stopped.

"What is this?""

Daniel took a small step backward.

Richard looked up.

"Your company listed three commercial properties as collateral for the proposed development.""

"Yes.""

"One of them appears to have been transferred to another holding company six months ago.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"That was a restructuring matter.""

"And the second property?""

"Still under our control.""

Richard tapped the screen.

"According to these records, it was sold four months ago.""

Daniel looked toward his wife.

Vanessa's face had lost its color.

Richard continued.

"That leaves one property. And our preliminary review suggests that its valuation was substantially inflated.""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Mr. Carter, I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

Daniel glanced around.

"I'd prefer not to discuss confidential financial information in front of everyone.""

Richard nodded.

"Fair enough. Conference room. Now.""

As the group moved toward the private executive corridor, Danielle heard Vanessa whisper something to her husband.

"You told me everything was taken care of.""

Daniel replied sharply.

"Not now.""

Danielle stopped walking.

Those words stayed with her.

Everything was taken care of.

What exactly had Daniel taken care of?

And why did Vanessa sound frightened?

Before Danielle could think further, Tasha approached.

"Miss Carter?""

Danielle turned.

Tasha held out a small paper bag.

"I brought you some water and crackers. I thought you might need something.""

Danielle smiled.

"Thank you. That's very kind.""

Tasha hesitated.

"Can I ask you something?""

"Of course.""

"Are you going to be okay?""

Danielle looked at her newborn.

Then at the red mark on her cheek.

"Eventually.""

Tasha nodded.

"I hope you know that what happened wasn't your fault.""

Danielle's eyes filled again.

"Thank you.""

Tasha glanced toward the executive corridor.

"I also wanted to tell you something. Mrs. Whitmore has complained about employees before. Sometimes people lose shifts after she complains.""

Danielle frowned.

"Has that happened to you?""

Tasha looked down.

"Not yet. But I've seen it happen.""

"Then why did you record the incident?""

Tasha gave a nervous laugh.

"Because I was tired of being afraid.""

Danielle reached for her hand.

"You did the right thing.""

Across the lobby, Marcus was being asked to accompany Patricia to the administrative office.

He looked furious.

"This is completely unnecessary," he protested.

Patricia didn't raise her voice.

"Marcus, your role in the incident will be reviewed. Please cooperate.""

"I was following procedure.""

"Then the records will show that.""

Marcus turned toward Richard.

"Sir, I've worked here for four years. I've always protected this hotel's reputation.""

Richard stopped.

"Then you should have protected the people inside it.""

Marcus said nothing.

A few minutes later, Danielle was escorted to a private guest suite.

The room overlooked the city skyline.

Soft lamps illuminated the cream-colored furniture, and a small crib had already been prepared for Amara.

Danielle placed her daughter carefully inside.

For the first time since entering the hotel, she could sit without feeling watched.

She looked at herself in the mirror.

The mark on her cheek was darker now.

She touched it gently.

Then she remembered the moment Vanessa's hand had struck her.

Her stomach tightened.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from her husband, Michael.

*Michael:* How are you and Amara? Your father called me. I'm on my way.

Danielle smiled faintly.

*Danielle:* We're safe. Don't worry.

A second message appeared.

*Michael:* I am worried. Nobody gets to put their hands on my family.

Danielle set the phone down.

Outside the room, footsteps approached.

Richard entered carrying a folder.

"How's my girl?""

"Better.""

He sat beside her.

"I've been thinking about what happened.""

"Dad, please don't blame yourself.""

Richard looked surprised.

"Blame myself?""

"I know you own the hotel. I know you work hard to keep everything running. I don't want this becoming a bigger problem because of me.""

Richard leaned back.

"Danielle, listen to me. You did not create this problem.""

He opened the folder.

"There are things happening with the Whitmore company that I need to investigate. Your incident simply brought another issue to my attention.""

"What issue?""

Richard looked at the paperwork.

"False financial disclosures. Possibly unauthorized transfers. We don't know the full extent yet.""

Danielle frowned.

"Do you think Vanessa knows?""

"I think we should let the investigation answer that question.""

He closed the folder.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Patricia appeared.

Richard read it twice.

His expression changed.

"What's wrong?"" Danielle asked.

Richard looked at her.

"Security found something else.""

"What?""

He handed her the phone.

It was a screenshot from the hotel's internal incident system.

A complaint had been filed against Danielle before Richard even arrived.

The report claimed that Danielle had threatened Vanessa, behaved aggressively, and deliberately caused a disturbance.

But there was one detail that made Danielle's blood run cold.

The complaint had been submitted under her full name.

And the timestamp showed it had been filed before the slap.

Danielle looked at her father.

"How could they report me before it even happened?""

Richard stood slowly.

"That's exactly what I intend to find out.""

Then another message arrived.

This time, it was from the security director.

*Mr. Carter, we've discovered that someone attempted to delete the original lobby footage shortly after the incident.*

Richard's eyes hardened.

He looked toward the door.

"Patricia needs to come back here.""

Because somebody inside the hotel hadn't merely tried to protect Vanessa.

May you like

They had tried to erase the evidence.

And Richard was beginning to suspect that the woman in the fuchsia dress wasn't the only person involved.
