Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Never Supposed to Enter the Ballroom

"Find Lauren Pierce. Immediately.""
Richard Carter's order sent three members of the hotel's security team rushing toward the elevators.
Daniel Whitmore remained beside the conference table, his face drained of color.
Vanessa sat motionless, staring at the message on her phone.
Danielle looked between them.
"Who is Lauren Pierce?""
Richard closed the folder in front of him.
"She's Daniel's executive assistant. She's also been communicating with someone inside our company.""
"But why would she want to stop me from entering the ballroom?""
Richard hesitated.
Before he could answer, Patricia stepped forward.
"Mr. Carter, there's something you should know about tonight's event.""
Richard looked at her.
"What is it?""
"The original event program was changed this afternoon.""
"Changed how?""
Patricia opened a document on her tablet.
"Your daughter's name was removed from the announcement schedule. The replacement document lists Mr. Whitmore as the principal business partner and includes a presentation about the upcoming hotel development.""
Richard frowned.
"Who authorized that change?""
Patricia checked the digital approval record.
"It appears to have come from the executive office.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"I never approved it.""
"That's what I suspected.""
Danielle looked at her father.
"Wait. Were you planning to announce my promotion tonight?""
Richard nodded.
"I wanted your first appearance as president to happen at the charity reception. I thought it would be a beautiful way to introduce you to the employees and our business partners.""
Danielle glanced down at Amara.
"Dad, I didn't know.""
"I wanted it to be a surprise.""
She gave a small, disbelieving laugh.
"You certainly surprised me.""
Richard smiled briefly.
Then he returned to the matter at hand.
"The announcement was confidential. Only a handful of executives knew.""
Daniel finally spoke.
"Mr. Carter, I think you're making an assumption about my company.""
Richard turned toward him.
"Your assistant's device was used to access my administrative account. Your wife just admitted that Lauren was supposed to prevent my daughter from reaching the ballroom. What assumption am I making?""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"I don't know what Lauren has been doing.""
Vanessa suddenly looked up.
"That's a lie.""
Daniel turned sharply.
"What?""
"You know exactly what she was doing.""
"Vanessa, stop.""
"No! I'm tired of protecting you.""
Danielle looked at her.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa's hands trembled.
"Lauren told me your father's announcement would ruin everything.""
Richard stared at her.
"How would Danielle becoming president ruin anything?""
Vanessa looked toward Daniel.
He shook his head slightly.
But she continued.
"Because the development agreement was supposed to be signed tonight. Daniel had already promised certain investors that he would control the hotel expansion.""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Control it?""
Daniel stepped forward.
"That is a complete misrepresentation.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Then explain why you kept telling me that once the announcement was made, we would lose everything.""
Daniel grabbed his briefcase.
"I'm leaving.""
Patricia moved toward the door.
"Mr. Whitmore, please wait.""
"Get out of my way.""
Richard raised his voice for the first time.
"Daniel!""
The businessman stopped.
Richard walked toward him.
"You came into my hotel tonight expecting to sign a multimillion-dollar agreement. Now we have evidence suggesting that someone attempted to manipulate my company's records, interfere with my daughter's appointment, and conceal financial information.""
He paused.
"And you think you're simply going to walk away?""
Daniel looked directly at him.
"You cannot detain me.""
Richard nodded.
"You're correct. But you can stay long enough to answer reasonable questions from our legal representatives.""
Daniel looked toward the door.
Then toward Vanessa.
For the first time, the two seemed completely disconnected.
A knock interrupted the confrontation.
James entered.
"Mr. Carter, we've located Lauren.""
Richard immediately turned.
"Where?""
"She was seen entering the underground parking garage approximately ten minutes ago.""
"Did she leave?""
"Not yet. Security is checking the vehicle exits.""
Richard looked at Patricia.
"Bring her here if she's willing to speak. Do not force anything.""
James nodded.
As he turned to leave, his radio crackled.
"Security to executive floor. We have a situation at the service entrance.""
James lifted the radio.
"Go ahead.""
A guard's voice came through.
"Ms. Pierce is attempting to leave with a document case. She says she has authorization from Mr. Whitmore.""
Daniel went pale.
Richard looked at him.
"What document case?""
Daniel didn't answer.
James spoke into the radio.
"Ask her to wait. Nobody should interfere with her belongings.""
A moment later, another voice came through.
"Understood. But she's asking to speak to Mrs. Whitmore.""
Vanessa slowly stood.
"She wants me?""
Richard looked at her.
"Do you know why?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know.""
But her voice suggested otherwise.
Richard turned toward Patricia.
"Have Lauren brought to the conference room.""
Ten minutes later, the door opened.
A woman in a charcoal business suit entered carrying a black leather document case.
She appeared to be in her early thirties.
Her blonde-highlighted hair was tied neatly behind her head, and her expression was controlled.
But when she saw Daniel, her composure faltered.
"Mr. Whitmore.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Lauren. What are you doing here?""
She placed the case on the table.
"I was leaving.""
"Why?""
"Because you told me to finish everything before the chairman arrived.""
Daniel's eyes widened.
"Keep your voice down.""
Lauren looked at Richard.
"Mr. Carter, I can explain what happened.""
Richard gestured toward a chair.
"Please do.""
Lauren sat.
Then she opened the document case.
Inside were printed emails, financial statements, hotel correspondence, and several folders marked CONFIDENTIAL.
Richard's legal counsel immediately leaned forward.
"Where did you obtain these documents?""
Lauren looked at Daniel.
"From Mr. Whitmore's office.""
Daniel stood.
"Those are company records. You had no right to remove them.""
Lauren looked at him.
"You told me to bring them.""
"I never said that.""
"You said if the partnership collapsed, I would be the person blamed.""
Daniel's face tightened.
"Lauren, be careful.""
She turned toward Richard.
"I have copies of the original development proposal, including a revised ownership structure.""
Richard opened the first folder.
His eyes moved across the pages.
Then he stopped.
The proposal listed a new company as the controlling partner in the hotel expansion.
Its name was Whitmore Strategic Holdings.
Richard looked up.
"This entity wasn't included in the original agreement.""
Lauren nodded.
"No. It was added in the revised documents.""
"Who authorized the change?""
"Mr. Whitmore.""
Daniel shook his head.
"She's lying.""
Lauren opened another folder.
"I also have the emails.""
Richard's legal counsel took the documents.
As he reviewed them, his expression grew increasingly serious.
"Mr. Carter, these emails appear to show that the revised ownership structure was submitted without the approval of the Carter Hospitality board.""
Richard turned toward Daniel.
"Is that true?""
Daniel looked at the papers.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
Nobody spoke.
Lauren continued.
"There was another issue. Mr. Whitmore believed Danielle's appointment would prevent the transaction from going through.""
Danielle tightened her hold on Amara.
"Why?""
"Because you would become the controlling executive responsible for approving future development agreements.""
Richard nodded slowly.
"And somebody wanted the agreement signed before that happened.""
Lauren looked down.
"Yes.""
Vanessa suddenly covered her mouth.
Richard turned toward her.
"Did you know about this?""
Vanessa began crying again.
"I knew Daniel was negotiating something. I didn't know all the details.""
Lauren looked at her.
"That's not true.""
Vanessa stared at her.
"Don't.""
Lauren continued.
"You knew about the ownership changes. You were the one who told me Danielle had to be kept away from the announcement.""
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"Because you told me it was necessary!""
Daniel slammed his hand against the table.
"Enough!""
Richard's security director moved closer.
Daniel stepped away from the table, breathing heavily.
Richard remained still.
"Why was my daughter specifically targeted?""
Lauren hesitated.
Then she opened the final folder.
Inside was a printed photograph of Danielle.
It had been taken several weeks earlier outside Carter Hospitality's corporate headquarters.
Beneath it was a handwritten note.
*If Danielle becomes president, the old agreement will be reviewed. Prevent her from attending the reception.*
Danielle stared at the photograph.
"Who wrote that?""
Lauren looked at Daniel.
"He did.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's not my handwriting.""
Richard took the page.
He examined it carefully.
Then he looked at his legal counsel.
"Preserve it for independent examination.""
His lawyer nodded.
Lauren lowered her voice.
"There's something else.""
Richard looked at her.
"What?""
"The reason they were so desperate to sign tonight wasn't just the ownership change.""
She reached into the document case and removed one final envelope.
It contained a list of payments.
Several names had been highlighted.
Richard scanned the first few lines.
Then he stopped.
His expression became unreadable.
"These payments were made to whom?""
Lauren swallowed.
"People connected to the hotel's previous management team.""
Patricia stepped forward.
"Previous management?""
Lauren nodded.
"And one payment was made to someone who still works in your executive office.""
Richard slowly closed the envelope.
"Who?""
Lauren looked at Danielle.
Then at Vanessa.
Finally, she whispered the name.
"Your chief financial officer, Robert Hayes.""
Richard's face changed.
Robert had been with the company for almost fifteen years.
He had attended Danielle's graduation.
He had stood beside Richard during his wife's funeral.
He had been one of the few people Richard trusted completely.
And now, according to the documents on the table, Robert might have been helping Daniel Whitmore gain control of the company.
Richard reached for his phone.
Before he could make the call, a new message appeared.
It was from Robert.
*Richard, I need to speak with you urgently. Don't trust Lauren. She's not telling you the whole story.*
A second message followed.
*And whatever you do, don't let Danielle sign anything tonight.*
Richard looked at his daughter.
Then he looked at the documents.
May you like
Because suddenly, the question wasn't simply who had tried to keep Danielle out of the ballroom.
It was why someone inside her own father's company was so desperate to stop her from becoming president.
