Chapter 8: The Betrayal Came From Inside the Family

Richard read Robert Hayes's message again.
Don't let Danielle sign anything tonight.
He looked toward his legal counsel.
"Did anyone prepare documents requiring Danielle's signature?""
The lawyer shook his head.
"Not that I'm aware of.""
Richard turned toward Patricia.
"Was there any paperwork scheduled for the ballroom presentation?""
Patricia checked the event records.
"There was supposed to be a ceremonial appointment announcement. Nothing requiring a signature.""
Richard looked back at the phone.
Then he called Robert.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Finally, a familiar voice answered.
"Richard.""
"Where are you?""
"At the corporate office.""
"Why are you messaging me about Danielle?""
Robert paused.
"Because there's something happening that you don't understand.""
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Then explain it.""
"Not over the phone.""
"Robert, I have Lauren Pierce sitting in front of me with documents showing unauthorized changes to the Whitmore agreement.""
Silence.
Then Robert sighed.
"Lauren doesn't know the entire arrangement.""
Richard looked toward the document case.
"What arrangement?""
"Meet me at the hotel. I'll explain everything.""
Richard lowered his voice.
"Are you involved in this?""
Robert didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Richard, I've been protecting this company for fifteen years. Don't make a decision you'll regret.""
The call ended.
Richard stared at the screen.
Danielle stepped closer.
"Dad?""
He looked at her.
"I need to speak with Robert.""
"Do you trust him?""
Richard didn't answer.
That silence frightened Danielle more than anything else.
Robert Hayes had been part of their lives for years.
He had attended family dinners.
He had helped Richard navigate difficult business decisions after Danielle's mother died.
He had even given Danielle a watch when she graduated from college.
She remembered him standing beside her father in the hospital waiting room when Amara was born.
He had seemed genuinely happy.
Now, his name appeared on a list of suspicious payments.
And he was warning her not to sign documents she had never even seen.
Richard finally spoke.
"I used to trust him.""
The conference room door opened.
A security employee entered.
"Mr. Carter, Mr. Hayes has arrived.""
Richard stood.
"Bring him in.""
Robert entered wearing a dark suit and carrying a leather briefcase.
His gray hair was neatly combed.
He looked exactly as Danielle remembered.
But his eyes moved immediately toward the papers on the table.
Then toward Lauren.
"You shouldn't have brought those here," he said.
Richard frowned.
"Good evening to you too.""
Robert placed his briefcase on the table.
"Richard, we need to discuss this privately.""
"No. We're discussing it here.""
Robert glanced at Danielle.
Then at the baby.
His expression softened.
"Danielle. How are you?""
She didn't answer.
He looked at her cheek.
"What happened?""
Richard spoke before she could.
"Vanessa Whitmore slapped her. Marcus tried to remove her. Someone attempted to delete the footage. And now we've discovered that your name appears in financial records connected to the Whitmore agreement.""
Robert closed his eyes.
"I was afraid of this.""
Richard leaned forward.
"Then tell me the truth.""
Robert sat down.
He opened his briefcase and removed a thin folder.
"Six months ago, Daniel approached me with a proposal.""
Richard stared.
"What proposal?""
"He wanted to invest in the hotel expansion. At the time, the company was experiencing cash-flow pressure because of the renovation costs.""
Richard nodded.
"I remember.""
Robert continued.
"He offered to provide financing through Whitmore Capital. In exchange, he requested a minority ownership position.""
"And?""
"I believed it was a reasonable offer.""
Richard looked at the folder.
"But the revised agreement gives him control.""
Robert shook his head.
"That wasn't the original arrangement.""
"Who changed it?""
Robert glanced at Daniel.
Daniel looked away.
Robert continued.
"I discovered the changes three weeks ago. I should have reported them immediately.""
Richard's voice became colder.
"Why didn't you?""
Robert hesitated.
"Because I had already approved several preliminary transactions.""
The room fell silent.
Richard stared at him.
"Without my authorization?""
Robert nodded.
"Yes.""
Danielle felt her stomach tighten.
"How much money?""
Robert looked at her.
"Danielle, I can explain.""
"How much?""
Robert lowered his eyes.
"Approximately four million dollars.""
Richard stood.
"Four million?""
"Some of it went toward legitimate project expenses.""
"Some of it?""
Robert rubbed his forehead.
"Some was transferred through intermediary companies.""
Richard looked toward the legal counsel.
"Document every transaction.""
The lawyer nodded.
Robert leaned forward.
"Richard, I didn't do this for personal gain.""
Richard laughed once, without humor.
"Then why did you do it?""
Robert looked at Danielle.
"Because I believed your father was making a mistake.""
Danielle frowned.
"What mistake?""
Robert turned toward Richard.
"Promoting Danielle to president.""
Richard's face became completely still.
Robert continued.
"I know you love your daughter. But she has only recently returned to the business. She doesn't have the experience required to oversee a company of this size.""
Danielle looked at him.
"Then why didn't you tell my father that directly?""
Robert sighed.
"Because he had already made up his mind.""
Richard's voice was low.
"You had fifteen years to discuss your concerns with me.""
"I did.""
"No. You disagreed with me. That's different.""
Robert opened another folder.
"I also believed that partnering with Daniel would protect the company from financial instability.""
Richard looked at him.
"By giving him control without the board's approval?""
Robert said nothing.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"Robert, tell them what you promised me.""
Everyone turned.
Daniel looked at her sharply.
"Vanessa.""
She ignored him.
"You told me Danielle would never become president. You said Richard would change his mind before the announcement.""
Robert stared at her.
"I never promised you that.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You told me the appointment was temporary.""
Robert looked toward Richard.
"That was a private discussion about succession planning.""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Explain.""
Robert shifted in his chair.
"Richard, you have been considering retirement. I believed the company needed an experienced executive to manage the transition.""
"And you believed that executive should be Daniel Whitmore?""
Robert nodded.
"I believed he had the financial backing.""
Richard stared at him.
"You were willing to hand an outside investor control of the company I built because you disagreed with my daughter's appointment?""
Robert lowered his voice.
"I thought it was best for the company.""
Danielle stepped forward.
"Did you also think it was best for the company to let a woman holding a newborn get slapped in the lobby?""
Robert looked startled.
"What?""
"Did you know about the incident before my father arrived?""
Robert hesitated.
That was enough.
Richard turned sharply.
"Robert?""
The CFO looked down.
"I received a message from Marcus.""
"And what did you do?""
"I told him to avoid escalating the situation.""
Danielle stared at him.
"You knew?""
Robert looked uncomfortable.
"I didn't know the full circumstances.""
"You knew I was being removed from the hotel.""
"Yes.""
"And you didn't tell my father?""
Robert didn't answer.
Danielle's voice trembled.
"You've known me since I was a little girl.""
Robert looked at her.
"Danielle, I never wanted you hurt.""
"But you didn't care enough to stop it.""
The room fell silent.
Robert rubbed his face.
"That's not fair.""
Richard stepped between them.
"What's not fair is that my daughter was treated like an intruder in a company she was supposed to lead.""
Robert looked at him.
"Richard, please. We can fix this.""
Richard shook his head.
"No. You can cooperate with the investigation.""
He turned toward legal counsel.
"Robert Hayes is suspended from all financial and administrative access pending an independent review.""
Robert stood.
"You can't do this!""
Richard looked directly at him.
"I can, and I am.""
For a moment, Robert seemed ready to argue.
Then he picked up his briefcase.
But before he could leave, Lauren spoke.
"Mr. Hayes?""
Robert stopped.
She opened her laptop.
"There's something you haven't told them.""
He turned slowly.
Lauren displayed a spreadsheet.
It contained a series of payments made to a private account.
The account holder was listed as Vanessa Whitmore.
Vanessa stood abruptly.
"What is that?""
Lauren looked at her.
"Payments from the company handling the proposed hotel acquisition.""
Vanessa's face went white.
Robert shook his head.
"Those were consulting fees.""
Lauren opened another document.
"Then why were they paid through an account registered to a shell company?""
Daniel stood.
"Lauren, shut that laptop.""
She didn't move.
Richard looked at Vanessa.
"Did you receive these payments?""
Vanessa began crying.
"I didn't know where they came from.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Vanessa!""
She looked at him.
"You told me it was legitimate!""
Daniel's face hardened.
"You were the one who wanted the money.""
The words hung in the air.
Vanessa stared at her husband.
Then she slowly sat down.
Richard looked toward his legal counsel.
"Preserve these records. Everything.""
The lawyer nodded.
At that moment, Danielle's phone vibrated.
It was Michael.
*Michael:* I'm downstairs. Security says there's an issue. Is Amara okay?
Danielle immediately called him.
"Michael?""
"Baby, where are you?""
"Executive conference room. We're safe.""
"I'm coming up.""
She smiled faintly.
"Okay.""
A few seconds later, Michael entered the room.
He wore a dark blue suit and carried a small baby bag.
The moment he saw Danielle's cheek, his expression changed.
He walked straight toward her.
"Who did this?""
Danielle looked at him.
"It's being handled.""
Michael gently kissed her forehead.
Then he looked toward Vanessa.
"Was it you?""
Vanessa looked down.
Michael's jaw tightened.
Richard stepped closer.
"Michael, we're dealing with it.""
Michael nodded.
"I understand.""
He opened the baby bag and handed Danielle a bottle of water.
Then he looked toward the table.
"What have you discovered?""
Richard explained the financial documents, the unauthorized transfers, and the attempted manipulation of the company's records.
Michael listened without interrupting.
Finally, he asked one question.
"Have you checked whether the proposed ownership transfer was already filed with the state?""
Richard looked toward his legal counsel.
The lawyer frowned.
"Not yet.""
Michael placed his phone on the table.
"I think you should.""
He opened an email.
"I received something from our family attorney about an hour ago. Someone sent him a document claiming that Danielle had already agreed to transfer her future voting rights to a third-party company.""
Danielle froze.
"What?""
Michael turned the phone toward her.
The document contained her name.
Her signature.
And a date from three weeks earlier.
Danielle stared at it.
"I never signed this.""
Richard took the phone.
His face darkened.
"Who prepared this?""
Michael pointed toward the bottom of the page.
There was an electronic authorization record.
And beneath it was the name of the person who had supposedly witnessed Danielle's signature.
Richard read it.
Then he looked at Robert.
Robert had stopped breathing.
Because the witness wasn't Daniel.
It wasn't Vanessa.
It wasn't Lauren.
It was Robert Hayes.
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
"Robert, did you forge my daughter's signature?""
Robert looked at Danielle.
Then at Richard.
And finally, he whispered:
"I didn't forge it.""
Danielle felt cold.
"Then who did?""
Robert closed his eyes.
"The person who had access to your mother's old estate records.""
Richard's expression changed completely.
"My wife's estate?""
Robert nodded.
"And if you want to know who prepared that document, you need to look at the original inheritance file.""
Richard stood motionless.
May you like
Because his wife had been dead for almost six years.
And the person responsible for managing her estate was someone he had trusted more than almost anyone else.
