Chapter 3: The Reservation I Never Made
I stood in the hallway reading the confirmation email.
At first, I thought it was a mistake.
Then I saw the reservation number.
It was different from mine.
The dates were identical.
The resort was identical.
And the booking included five guests.
Michael Carter.
Vanella Carter.
Brianna Carter.
Madison Reed.
And one additional name.
I read it again.
Olivia Carter.
My daughter.
I looked up.
“Vanella, explain this.””
She took one step toward me.
“Michael, please don't jump to conclusions.””
I turned the phone toward her.
“Why is there another reservation?””
She stared at the screen.
For a moment, she looked as though she might faint.
Brianna reached for the phone.
“That's not supposed to happen.””
I pulled it away.
“What isn't supposed to happen?””
Vanella took a breath.
“Michael, I booked that reservation as a backup.””
“A backup?””
“Yes. In case something happened with the original booking.””
“Something like me canceling it?””
She didn't answer.
I scrolled through the email.
The reservation had been made eleven days earlier.
The payment method was a credit card ending in numbers I didn't recognize.
The listed primary guest was Vanella.
The booking had already been paid in full.
I looked at her.
“Where did you get the money?””
“From my savings.””
I almost believed her.
Then I noticed the amount.
$12,000.
Exactly the amount I had paid for the original vacation.
I opened my banking application.
There it was.
An outgoing transfer from our joint household account.
Twelve thousand dollars.
The transaction date matched the reservation.
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Vanella.””
She closed her eyes.
“Michael, I was going to tell you.””
“You transferred twelve thousand dollars out of our joint account?””
“It was for the family.””
“You used money from our household account to book a second vacation while I was paying for the first one?””
“I didn't think you'd mind.””
I stared at her.
“You didn't think I'd mind?””
She raised her voice.
“Michael, you make everything about money! I was trying to do something nice for Brianna.””
“And Madison?””
“She needed a break.””
“And Olivia?””
Vanella looked away.
That was when I understood something.
The second booking hadn't been created to protect our family vacation.
It had been created to protect a different plan.
A plan that apparently didn't include me having any say in how my money was spent.
I opened the reservation details.
There was an additional note attached to the booking.
Please arrange separate room access for the younger guests. Do not place Olivia in the same suite as Brianna and Madison.
I read the sentence aloud.
“Separate room access?””
Vanella rubbed her temples.
“It's a normal arrangement.””
“For five people?””
“Michael, please.””
“Why does Olivia need a separate room?””
Brianna suddenly spoke.
“Because Madison and I wanted our own space.””
I looked at her.
“You wanted your own space from my daughter, so you used money from my household account to book her a separate room?””
“Mom said it was fine!””
I turned to Vanella.
“Did you plan to tell Olivia she was going on this vacation but would be separated from everyone?””
Vanella folded her arms.
“She doesn't like spending time with Brianna anyway.””
I felt my anger shift into something colder.
“That's not an answer.””
Vanella took a step closer.
“Michael, you need to understand that Brianna has never had the opportunities Olivia has had. She sees Olivia getting everything, and she feels like she has to compete.””
I looked at the woman I had married.
“Olivia lost her mother. I worked hard to make sure she never felt that losing one parent meant losing her entire childhood.””
“And what about Brianna?””
“Brianna has a mother standing beside her right now, defending her even after she stole something that wasn't hers.””
Vanella's eyes flashed.
“You're being cruel.””
“No. I'm asking a question. Why did you transfer twelve thousand dollars without telling me?””
She looked down.
“Because I knew you'd say no.””
The honesty of that answer stunned me.
I slowly lowered my phone.
“You knew I'd say no?””
“Yes!””
“Then you knew you weren't supposed to do it.””
“I knew you'd turn it into another argument about Olivia!””
I stared at her.
“Olivia had nothing to do with the money you took.””
Vanella laughed bitterly.
“Everything in this house revolves around Olivia. Her school, her clothes, her inheritance, her feelings. What about Brianna?””
Brianna moved beside her mother.
“Mom, forget it. He doesn't care.””
I looked at the girl.
“Brianna, I have paid for your school, your clothes, your phone, and every expense your mother has brought to me. I've never treated you like you were less important.””
“You're not my father,” she snapped.
The words hung in the air.
Vanella immediately touched her daughter's arm.
“Brianna.””
But I raised my hand.
“No. Let her finish.””
Brianna's eyes filled with angry tears.
“You always choose Olivia. Even when she's wrong, you choose her.””
I looked at the stained gown still lying across the staircase railing.
“Was she wrong to ask you not to take her dress?””
Brianna said nothing.
“Was she wrong to ask you not to take her grandmother's handbag?””
Still nothing.
I took a breath.
“You don't have to love Olivia. You don't even have to be friends. But you do have to respect her.””
Vanella stepped between us.
“This conversation is over.””
I nodded.
“Actually, it isn't.””
I opened the bank transaction and downloaded the transfer details.
Then I called my bank.
Vanella's expression changed immediately.
“Michael, what are you doing?””
“Protecting the household account.””
“You can't just freeze everything!””
“I can protect the money I earn.””
“That's my money, too!””
“Then we can review every transaction together.””
She reached toward my phone.
“Don't you dare!””
I moved away.
“I'm not discussing this while you're trying to take my phone.””
The bank representative answered.
I explained that I wanted to secure the joint account and review an unauthorized transfer.
Vanella stood motionless.
Brianna whispered something to her mother.
I couldn't hear the words, but I saw Vanella's face change.
Her confidence disappeared.
When I ended the call, she looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
Fear.
“Michael,” she said, “there's another reason I made that booking.””
I waited.
She glanced toward Brianna.
Brianna shook her head.
“Mom, don't.””
Vanella ignored her.
“Madison wasn't supposed to come just for the vacation.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanella looked at the floor.
“Brianna and Madison were planning to stay with us after Hawaii.””
“Stay with us?””
“For a few months.””
“Why?””
Brianna finally spoke.
“Because Madison's mother is moving overseas, and she doesn't want to go.””
I looked at her.
“And you thought you could invite another person to live in my house without asking me?””
Vanella's voice dropped.
“She was going to help Brianna feel more comfortable.””
I stared at her.
There were already two daughters in this house.
One had been trying desperately to be accepted.
The other had learned that if she complained loudly enough, everyone would rearrange their lives around her.
And my wife had been quietly preparing to add another person to that arrangement.
I turned toward the staircase.
“I'm going to check on Olivia.””
Vanella followed me.
“Michael, don't walk away from me.””
I stopped at the bottom step.
“I've spent four years trying to make this marriage work. But I'm not sacrificing my daughter to keep you happy.””
She grabbed my sleeve.
“Don't make a decision you'll regret.””
I gently removed her hand.
“I'm already regretting one.””
I climbed the stairs.
Olivia was sitting on her bedroom floor, carefully removing the damaged sequins from her grandmother's dress.
A small sewing box sat beside her.
She looked up when I entered.
“Dad?””
I knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart, I need to ask you something.””
She put down the needle.
“What?””
“Did you know about Madison staying here?””
Olivia nodded slowly.
“Brianna told me last week.””
“Did she say why?””
Olivia hesitated.
Then she reached into her desk drawer and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I found this in the printer yesterday.””
I opened it.
It was a printed document.
At the top was the name of an attorney's office.
Below it was a heading:
*PROPOSED HOUSEHOLD AND PROPERTY ARRANGEMENTS.*
I scanned the first paragraph.
Then I read the second.
My hands went cold.
It wasn't simply a plan for Madison to stay in our house.
It was a proposal to transfer ownership of a portion of the property into Vanella's name.
And at the bottom of the page, someone had written a handwritten note.
Once Michael agrees, Olivia's access to the east wing can be restricted.
I looked at my daughter.
“Where did you find this?””
“In the printer tray.””
“Did you show your stepmother?””
Olivia shook her head.
“I didn't know what it meant.””
I read the document again.
Then I noticed the date.
The proposal had been prepared three weeks before the argument over the dress.
Three weeks before the Hawaii booking.
Three weeks before my wife had told me she wanted to take a family vacation.
I looked at the signature line.
There was a name written beneath the heading, confirming that the document had been prepared at Vanella's request.
And beside it was a handwritten instruction that made my heart stop.
Do not discuss the inheritance until the vacation is complete.
I stared at the paper.
Then I heard my wife's footsteps outside Olivia's bedroom.
“Michael,” Vanella called through the door.
Her voice was trembling.
“Please put that document down. There's something about Olivia's inheritance you don't understand.””
May you like
I slowly turned toward the door.
Because suddenly, the stained dress and the canceled vacation seemed like the smallest parts of what was happening inside my own home.
