Chapter 7: The Price of My Daughter's Inheritance
“Because the forty thousand dollars was never supposed to be the real payment.””
Denise's voice came through the speakerphone with such confidence that, for a moment, nobody moved.
Vanella stood beside the dining table, gripping her phone with both hands.
Brianna had backed away toward the kitchen.
I reached across the table and turned the speaker volume higher.
“Denise,” I said, “you have my attention. Explain yourself.””
A short laugh came through the phone.
“Michael. Finally. I've heard so much about you.””
“I doubt that.””
“Vanella told me you're a very successful man. Very protective of your daughter, too.””
I glanced at my wife.
“Get to the point.””
“Of course. The forty thousand dollars was an advance. There was supposed to be another sixty thousand once the property documents were finalized.””
“And who was supposed to receive that money?””
“Vanella, naturally. She was the one doing the work.””
Vanella shook her head.
“Denise, you told me the full amount was supposed to clear my debts!””
Denise sighed.
“Vanella, darling, we discussed this. You were going to receive your portion after the transaction was completed.””
“My portion?””
“Don't pretend you misunderstood.””
I stepped closer to the phone.
“What transaction?””
“The transfer of the east wing into a family holding arrangement.””
“Olivia's property?””
“Technically, yes.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“You tried to steal a house from an eighteen-year-old girl.””
“That's a rather emotional way of describing a property restructuring.””
I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“Emotional?””
“Yes. The girl has no immediate need for that much property. Your wife thought it would be better managed by the adults.””
I looked at Vanella.
She couldn't meet my eyes.
“Denise,” I said, “you have thirty seconds to explain why you believed you could take my daughter's inheritance.””
Denise laughed again.
“Because your wife told me you had already agreed.””
I turned toward Vanella.
“Did you tell her that?””
Vanella shook her head desperately.
“No. I told her you might agree.””
Denise interrupted.
“You said he wouldn't object once the documents were prepared.””
“That's not what I said!””
“Vanella, please. We have messages.””
The color drained from my wife's face.
I held out my hand.
“Give me the phone.””
She hesitated.
“Michael—”
“Now.””
She placed it on the table.
I activated the recording function on my own device and informed Denise that the conversation was being documented.
Then I continued.
“You mentioned a second transfer. Who was supposed to receive the remaining sixty thousand?””
Denise's tone changed.
“That's none of your business.””
“It's my daughter's property.””
“Then perhaps you should have paid more attention to your household.””
I heard a chair scrape against the floor.
Brianna was crying now.
“Mom, make her stop.””
Denise heard her.
“Brianna? Is that you?””
Brianna froze.
“Don't talk to me.””
“Oh, sweetheart. Don't be dramatic. You were going to benefit from this, too.””
I turned toward her.
“What does she mean?””
Brianna shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Denise laughed.
“Come on, Brianna. You and Madison already discussed the room arrangements.””
Vanella closed her eyes.
I looked at Brianna.
“What room arrangements?””
Brianna whispered, “The east wing.””
Denise continued.
“Your mother wanted to make sure you had a permanent place in the house. Madison was going to help organize everything.””
I felt my hands curl into fists.
“You were going to give my daughter's property to your friend's daughter?””
Denise sighed.
“Michael, you're making this sound much worse than it was.””
“Stop telling me how to feel about someone trying to take my daughter's inheritance.””
There was a brief pause.
Then Denise said something that made the room go silent.
“Perhaps you should ask Vanella why she was so desperate to get the money before Olivia turned nineteen.””
I looked at my wife.
“Why?””
Vanella's lips trembled.
Denise answered for her.
“Because once Olivia reached the next stage of the trust arrangement, the restrictions would become even harder to challenge. We had a deadline.””
I felt sick.
The deadline hadn't been about a vacation.
It hadn't been about family bonding.
It had been about getting the paperwork through before Olivia's legal protections became stronger.
I looked at Vanella.
“Is that true?””
She began crying.
“Michael, I never wanted to hurt her.””
“But you knew about the deadline.””
“I thought I could fix everything before she found out.””
I stared at her.
“You thought you could steal from my daughter and then fix it afterward?””
She covered her mouth.
Denise interrupted.
“Vanella, don't let him manipulate you. We all agreed this would improve your financial position.””
I picked up the phone.
“Denise, listen carefully. The attorney has already been informed. The forged documents are being preserved.
The lending company has been contacted. You will not receive another dollar.””
Her voice became cold.
“You have no idea how many people are involved.””
“Then I suggest you start telling the truth.””
I ended the call.
For several seconds, the only sound in the dining room was Vanella crying.
Then Brianna spoke.
“Mom, you said Madison was helping us.””
Vanella looked at her daughter.
“She was.””
“No. She was helping herself!””
“Brianna, please.””
“She kept asking me to take pictures of Olivia's room. She wanted to know where the original documents were kept. She even asked me about Dad's office!””
I turned toward her.
“When?””
“Last month.””
I stared.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Brianna looked ashamed.
“Because Madison said she was just helping us plan the vacation.””
Vanella shook her head.
“That's enough.””
“No, Mom!”” Brianna shouted.
“You told me Olivia was going to college and wouldn't need the house. You said we'd finally have something that belonged to us.””
I looked at my stepdaughter.
“Brianna, you have a home. You've had one since you moved in.””
She wiped her eyes.
“But I never felt like it was mine.””
I paused.
That was the first honest thing she had said all evening.
But it didn't excuse what she had done.
“You could have told me that,” I replied.
“You could have asked for help. Instead, you participated in taking things that belonged to Olivia.””
Brianna lowered her head.
I looked at Vanella.
“Where are the original trust documents?””
“In the study cabinet.””
“Who has access?””
“Only you and me.””
“Did you remove anything?””
“No.””
I watched her face.
“Are you sure?””
She nodded.
I went into the study and opened the locked cabinet.
The folder containing the original trust documents was still there.
But the envelope that had contained Rebecca's personal letter to Olivia was missing.
I searched the other folders.
Nothing.
I called Daniel.
“There's a missing envelope from Rebecca's estate file.””
“What was inside?””
“A letter. Rebecca wrote it for Olivia before she died.””
Daniel was quiet.
“Was it part of the legal trust?””
“No. It was personal.””
“Then we need to find it. But don't disturb anything else.””
I returned to the dining room.
“Vanella, where is Rebecca's letter?””
She looked confused.
“What letter?””
“The envelope from the trust cabinet.””
“I don't know.””
“Did you remove it?””
“No.””
I turned toward Brianna.
She was staring at the floor.
“Brianna?””
She swallowed.
“Madison took it.””
I felt my heart stop.
“When?””
“Two weeks ago.””
Vanella stood abruptly.
“Brianna!””
“She said she needed to see whether there was anything important in it!””
I looked at my stepdaughter.
“Why would Madison want a personal letter from Rebecca?””
Brianna began crying harder.
“She said it might contain something that could help with the property documents.””
I closed my eyes.
That letter had been written shortly before Rebecca died.
She had asked me to keep it safe until Olivia was old enough to understand what her mother had wanted for her future.
I had never read it.
I had promised Rebecca I wouldn't.
I looked at Vanella.
“Where is Madison?””
“I don't know.””
“Then find her.””
Vanella picked up her phone.
But before she could make another call, mine rang.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
“Michael, we've received the preliminary forensic review.””
“What did you find?””
“The beneficiary consent form wasn't signed by Olivia.””
“I know.””
“There's more. The signature appears to have been copied from an older school document.””
Brianna covered her mouth.
Daniel continued.
“The witness signature is also questionable. We have evidence suggesting the document was submitted through an electronic account associated with your wife.””
I looked at Vanella.
“Can you prove who uploaded it?””
“We're working on that.””
Then Daniel paused.
“Michael, we also received a notification from the lending company. Someone attempted to authorize the second sixty-thousand-dollar transfer this morning.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
“The request came from a device associated with your wife's email account.””
Vanella started shaking her head.
“No. No, I didn't do that.””
I looked at her.
“Did you?””
“I swear I didn't!””
Daniel continued.
“The transfer was temporarily blocked because the beneficiary verification failed. However, there's another issue.””
“What?””
“The company received a message requesting that the funds be sent to a different account.””
“Whose account?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Madison Reed's.””
I stared at the phone.
Then I looked at Brianna.
Her face had gone completely white.
She whispered:
“Madison told me she was going to Hawaii.””
I slowly lowered the phone.
The vacation had never been about a family celebration.
May you like
It had been a cover.
And the person who had encouraged all of this might already be preparing to disappear.
