Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Plan

I returned home just after noon.

The mansion was unusually quiet.

No television.

No music.

No footsteps from upstairs.

Only the steady ticking of the grandfather clock in the entrance hall.

Vanella was sitting at the dining table with a glass of water in front of her.

Her eyes were swollen.

Brianna stood beside the kitchen island, scrolling through her phone.

Neither looked up when I entered.

I placed my briefcase on the table.

“Where is Olivia?””

“In her room,” Vanella answered.

“Is she okay?””

“She doesn't want to talk to me.””

I looked at Brianna.

“Where is Madison?””

Brianna locked her phone.

“I don't know.””

“You were supposed to be in contact with her.””

“She isn't answering.””

“Then perhaps you should tell me why her mother was involved in a forty-thousand-dollar loan.””

Brianna's expression changed.

“Mom told you?””

“She told me enough.””

Vanella stood.

“Michael, can we please sit down?””

I remained standing.

“No more half-truths.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Fine.””

I pulled out a chair.

“Start from the beginning.””

Vanella sat across from me.

For several seconds, she stared at her hands.

Then she began.

“Last year, Brianna started having problems at school. She was spending too much money, and I was struggling to keep up.””

I looked at her.

“You could have told me.””

“I didn't want you thinking she was irresponsible.””

“Vanella, she's your daughter. I would have helped.””

“You always say that, but every time I asked for something extra, you wanted to know why.””

“Because I was managing the household budget.””

She looked away.

“Madison's mother, Denise, became a close friend. She told me about private investment opportunities. She said she knew people who could help us reorganize our finances.””

I folded my arms.

“And you believed her?””

“At first, yes.””

“What did she promise?””

“That we could use the property value to secure a temporary loan. She said the money could clear my debts, and we'd repay it before anyone noticed.””

I stared at her.

“Before anyone noticed?””

Vanella closed her eyes.

“I know how that sounds.””

“It sounds like fraud.””

She began crying again.

“Denise said it was legal!””

“Did she explain how she intended to use Olivia's inheritance?””

“She said the trust could be reorganized.””

“Daniel told you it couldn't.””

Vanella nodded.

“That's why she introduced me to Gregory.””

I leaned forward.

“Did Gregory know the authorization was false?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you?””

She didn't answer.

That silence was more damaging than any confession.

I stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, the garden was bright beneath the afternoon sun. The fountain Rebecca had chosen was still running.

I could almost hear her laughing there.

I remembered how she had once told me that the greatest gift I could give Olivia was a home where she never had to compete for love.

I turned back.

“Why was Brianna involved?””

Vanella looked toward her daughter.

“She wasn't supposed to know everything.””

Brianna suddenly slammed her phone onto the counter.

“That's not true!””

Vanella turned.

“Brianna, don't.””

“You told me Madison's mother would make everything better!””

I looked at her.

“What did you know?””

Brianna swallowed.

“I knew Mom was trying to get money.””

“How much?””

“Forty thousand.””

“Did you know where it was coming from?””

She hesitated.

“Mom said it was from the house.””

“Whose house?””

Brianna looked at Vanella.

Then she whispered, “Olivia's.””

I felt something inside me break.

“Did you know they were trying to move her out of the east wing?””

Brianna nodded.

“Mom said Olivia wouldn't need all that space when she went to college.””

“And the dress?””

Brianna frowned.

“What about it?””

“Did you take it because you wanted to hurt her?””

“No!””

“Did you know it was her grandmother's dress?””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Brianna's eyes filled.

“Because Madison wanted to see it.””

I stared at her.

“Madison wanted to see Olivia's dress?””

Brianna nodded.

“She said Olivia had so many expensive things, and I should stop acting like I was less important.””

I looked toward Vanella.

“Your daughter's friend was encouraging her to take Olivia's belongings?””

Vanella looked down.

“I didn't know about the dress.””

“But you knew about the handbag.””

She didn't deny it.

I took a slow breath.

“Brianna, where is the handbag now?””

“Olivia has it.””

“Good.””

Then I asked the question that had been bothering me since the night before.

“What was the surprise Madison was talking about?””

Brianna looked terrified.

Vanella stood abruptly.

“Michael, that's enough.””

“No.””

“Please!””

I turned toward Brianna.

“Tell me.””

Brianna's voice cracked.

“Madison said she was going to help me get something.””

“What?””

“A new room.””

I frowned.

“Where?””

“In the east wing.””

I looked at Vanella.

She lowered her head.

Brianna continued.

“She said once Olivia's inheritance was transferred, we could make the whole east wing ours. Madison would stay with us, and we could turn the big bedroom into a dressing room.””

I stared at her.

“You planned to turn your stepsister's bedroom into a dressing room?””

Brianna began crying.

“Madison said it was going to happen anyway.””

I looked at Vanella.

“Did you tell her that?””

Vanella covered her face.

“I thought if we could make the property arrangement work, everyone would have more space.””

“Everyone except Olivia.””

She shook her head.

“I didn't think she would mind.””

I let out a long breath.

“She has been telling you for months that she doesn't feel welcome, and you still didn't think she would mind?””

Nobody answered.

I took my phone out.

“I'm calling Daniel.””

Vanella immediately stood.

“Michael, please. Don't bring lawyers into this.””

“Daniel is already involved.””

“Then call him and tell him to stop.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because if the loan investigation continues, my name will be attached to everything.””

“It already is.””

Her face turned pale.

“You don't understand. Denise said this could become a criminal matter.””

I paused.

“What exactly did Denise say?””

Vanella looked toward Brianna.

Then she whispered:

“She said if anyone asked, we should tell them Olivia had agreed to the property changes.””

I felt my grip tighten around the phone.

“Did Olivia ever agree?””

“No.””

“Did you ask her?””

“No.””

“Then why would you use her name?””

Vanella started crying again.

“I was desperate.””

I walked away and called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“Michael, I was about to call you.””

“What happened?””

“We received preliminary records from Gregory Shaw's office.””

I moved into the study and closed the door.

“What did you find?””

“The forty-thousand-dollar advance was transferred into an account belonging to a company called Reed Lifestyle Consulting.””

I froze.

“Reed?””

“Yes. The registered director is Denise Reed.””

Madison's mother.

I looked through the glass doors toward the dining room.

Vanella was sitting with her head in her hands.

“Daniel, was Vanella the only person involved?””

“Not according to the records.””

“What else?””

“There are several communications between Denise and another person. Someone who appears to have provided personal information about the property and your financial arrangements.””

I felt a chill run down my back.

“Who?””

Daniel paused.

Then he said:

“The emails were forwarded from an address registered to someone inside your household.””

I looked at the study door.

“Whose address?””

“Your wife's.””

I closed my eyes.

“Is that all?””

“No.””

Daniel's voice became more serious.

“The forty thousand dollars was not the only payment. There's a second transaction listed as a pending disbursement.””

“How much?””

“Another sixty thousand.””

I gripped the desk.

“Can it be stopped?””

“We've contacted the relevant parties. But there's a more urgent issue.””

“What?””

“The second disbursement requires an additional document. It appears someone has already submitted it.””

I stared at the wall.

“What document?””

“A beneficiary consent form.””

My stomach dropped.

“Whose consent?””

“Olivia's.””

I couldn't breathe for a moment.

“That's impossible. Olivia never signed anything.””

Daniel spoke carefully.

“Michael, the signature on this document appears to be hers.””

I ended the call and walked straight back into the dining room.

Vanella looked up when I entered.

“Michael?””

I placed my phone on the table.

“Did you forge Olivia's signature?””

Her face drained of color.

“What?””

“Did you sign her name on a beneficiary consent form?””

Brianna stopped moving.

Vanella stared at me.

“I didn't—”

“Think carefully before you answer.””

She began shaking her head.

“I never touched Olivia's signature.””

I looked at Brianna.

“Did you?””

Brianna stepped backward.

“Why are you looking at me?””

“Because someone signed my daughter's name.””

“I didn't!””

Vanella grabbed her daughter's arm.

“Brianna, don't say anything.””

I turned toward my wife.

“Why shouldn't she say anything?””

Vanella's eyes widened.

She seemed to realize what she'd just done.

Brianna pulled her arm away.

“Mom, you said the signature was already taken care of!””

The room went silent.

Vanella stared at her daughter.

I felt my heart pounding.

“Who took care of it?””

Brianna began crying.

“Madison.””

I looked at her.

“Madison signed Olivia's name?””

Brianna nodded.

“She said she could make it look exactly like Olivia's handwriting. She had a photograph of one of her school forms.””

I felt sick.

“And you knew?””

Brianna shook her head.

“I didn't know she was going to use it for a real document!””

Vanella stood up.

“Brianna, stop talking!””

But the damage was done.

I took my phone and called Daniel again.

“Daniel, we need to secure every document immediately. Someone has admitted that Olivia's signature was copied.””

He went quiet.

Then he said, “Michael, there's one more thing you need to know.””

I closed my eyes.

“What now?””

“The beneficiary consent form includes a witness signature.””

“Whose?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he gave me a name.

“Vanella Carter.””

I looked at my wife.

She was standing in the middle of the dining room, trembling.

And for the first time since I had married her, I realized I might not know this woman at all.

Then Daniel added:

“Michael, the form also contains a date indicating Olivia personally appeared before the witness.””

I stared at Vanella.

“That never happened.””

“I know,” Daniel replied.

“Because Olivia was at school that day.””

Daniel paused.

“Exactly. And the school attendance record confirms she was there.””

I slowly lowered the phone.

Someone had created a document claiming my daughter had personally agreed to surrender control of her inheritance.

Someone had copied her signature.

Someone had falsely witnessed it.

And someone had been preparing to take another sixty thousand dollars.

I looked at Brianna.

“Where is Madison right now?””

She wiped her face.

“I don't know.””

I turned toward Vanella.

“Call Denise. Tell her we need to speak.””

Vanella shook her head.

“She won't answer me.””

“Try.””

She picked up her phone with trembling hands.

A moment later, she pressed the call button.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then a woman's cheerful voice answered.

“Vanella! I was just about to call you. Did everything work out with the vacation?””

Vanella looked at me.

Her lips trembled.

“Denise, we have a problem.””

The cheerful voice disappeared.

“What kind of problem?””

Vanella swallowed.

“Michael knows about the loan.””

There was a long silence.

Then Denise spoke.

“Does he know about the second transfer?””

I stepped closer to the phone.

“Yes,” I said.

Another silence.

Then Denise laughed softly.

“Then I suppose it's time to tell him what his wife agreed to do before the vacation.””

Vanella's face went completely white.

May you like

And Denise continued:

“Because the forty thousand dollars was never supposed to be the real payment.””
