Chapter 10: The Truth He Chose to Forget
The voice from the screen did not sound like an enemy.
That was the worst part.
It sounded like Dominic.
Calm.
Controlled.
Certain.
The kind of voice he used during negotiations when he already knew the outcome.
But this wasn’t a stranger.
This was a recording of himself.
Seven years ago.
The room remained frozen.
No one moved.
Not Marcus.
Not Victoria.
Not Elena.
Not even Vincent.
Because everyone understood the impossible thing happening in front of them.
Dominic Vale had not forgotten a conversation.
He had forgotten a decision.
The screen flickered.
Then the younger version of Dominic appeared.
He was sitting in his father’s old office.
His face looked exhausted.
Older than his actual age.
Angry.
Afraid.
But still Dominic.
The man on the screen leaned forward.
“If you’re watching this, it means the plan failed.””
Dominic felt his chest tighten.
The recording continued.
“I don’t know what you remember.””
A pause.
“But if Elena is alive, if my mother is alive, then things went better than expected.””
Dominic looked at Elena.
She covered her mouth.
Because she had never seen this.
Not once.
The younger Dominic continued.
“I need you to understand something.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“I chose this.””
The words landed like a physical blow.
Dominic stared.
“No.””
The recording continued.
“I chose to forget.””
Nobody spoke.
The younger Dominic reached for a document.
“The only way to protect the people I love was to remove myself from the fight.””
Present-day Dominic felt his breathing change.
The accident.
The memory loss.
The pain.
All of it.
He had spent years believing someone stole his life.
But maybe he had sacrificed it.
“I don’t understand,” he whispered.
Elena stepped closer.
“Neither did I at first.””
Dominic looked at her.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“Not everything.””
“Then what?””
Elena looked at the screen.
“Your memory wasn’t damaged by the crash.””
The truth arrived quietly.
“The crash was part of the plan.””
Dominic stared.
“What?””
“You knew Marcus would come after you.””
“How?””
“Because you discovered what Richard left behind.””
The younger Dominic on the screen continued.
“Marcus believes power comes from controlling people.””
The recording showed him placing files on the desk.
“He’s wrong.””
A pause.
“Power comes from knowing when to disappear.””
Dominic looked at the papers.
The same symbol appeared.
Blackwater.
“The only way to destroy a system built on secrets is to become a secret.””
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
Dominic’s name.
His signature.
His own handwriting.
A legal statement.
The room became silent.
Victoria whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Dominic looked at her.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
For the first time, she looked genuinely shocked.
The recording continued.
“I created a backup plan.””
The younger Dominic looked exhausted.
“I arranged for my assets to be frozen. I moved the evidence. I made sure Marcus could never access the real inheritance.””
Marcus’s face changed.
A small reaction.
But everyone saw it.
Dominic turned.
“You failed.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“No.””
Dominic stepped closer.
“I understand perfectly.””
The recording continued.
“The hardest part wasn’t losing my memory.””
The younger Dominic looked down.
“The hardest part was knowing I might never remember the people I was protecting.””
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
Sophie held her mother’s hand.
Dominic watched himself on the screen.
And suddenly, pieces returned.
Not all.
But enough.
A hospital room.
Elena sitting beside him.
Victoria crying.
Marcus pretending to help.
And Dominic making a choice.
Not because he was weak.
Because he trusted himself.
The recording continued.
“If you remember everything, you’ll become angry.””
A small, sad smile appeared on younger Dominic’s face.
“And anger is exactly what Marcus wants.””
Dominic felt the truth settle.
Marcus hadn’t just wanted control.
He wanted Dominic to become reckless.
To destroy himself.
The recording ended with one final sentence.
“So if you’re watching this…”
The younger Dominic looked directly at him.
“Choose carefully.””
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus laughed.
Quietly.
Almost sadly.
“You always did love dramatic endings.””
Dominic turned.
The anger was there.
But it was different now.
Controlled.
Focused.
The old Dominic would have attacked.
The new Dominic understood.
That was the entire point.
“You knew about the recording.””
Marcus shrugged.
“I knew you made one.””
“And you couldn’t find it.””
“No.””
“Because you never understood me.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“I raised you.””
Dominic shook his head.
“No.””
A pause.
“You managed me.””
The words cut deeper than any insult.
Marcus looked toward the window.
“You think you’ve won?””
Dominic glanced outside.
The armed men surrounded the estate.
The doors were locked.
The security systems were compromised.
Marcus smiled.
“You’re trapped.””
Dominic looked at Vincent.
Vincent was already looking back.
A silent conversation passed between them.
Fourteen years of trust.
One nod.
That was all.
Marcus noticed.
“What?””
Dominic smiled slightly.
“The thing about security systems…”
He looked at Vincent.
“…is that they always have a backup.””
Vincent touched his phone.
The lights immediately returned.
The locks released.
The security monitors changed.
The vehicles outside stopped moving.
Marcus’s smile disappeared.
“What did you do?””
Vincent answered calmly.
“Your people entered a private property.””
He looked at Dominic.
“They made the mistake of connecting to our system.””
Dominic understood.
A trap.
Marcus had been so focused on controlling the house that he never noticed the house was watching him.
The guards outside were surrounded within minutes.
The police had already been contacted.
Marcus stared at Dominic.
“You planned this?””
Dominic looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“I remembered it.””
Marcus looked almost disappointed.
“You really are your father’s son.””
Dominic shook his head.
“No.””
He looked toward Elena.
Then Victoria.
Then the children.
“I’m finally not.””
The next hour passed like a lifetime.
Statements were taken.
Evidence was collected.
The Blackwater files were secured.
The truth that had been buried for years finally reached the surface.
But Dominic knew something important.
Not every wound closed because the truth appeared.
Some wounds needed time.
Later that night, the mansion became quiet.
The rain had stopped.
For the first time in years, the house felt peaceful.
Dominic stood near the lake windows.
Elena joined him.
“You hate me.””
He looked at her.
“No.””
She seemed surprised.
“I should.””
“Maybe.””
A pause.
“But I don’t.””
Elena looked down.
“I’m sorry.””
Dominic nodded.
“I know.””
“You keep saying that.””
A small smile appeared.
“You sound like me.””
He almost smiled back.
Almost.
“What happened after the crash?””
Elena looked outside.
“I stayed hidden.””
“Why?””
“Because Marcus wasn’t the only danger.””
Dominic looked at her.
She sighed.
“There were people inside Blackwater who wanted the evidence destroyed.””
“And now?””
“Now they can’t hide.””
They stood silently.
Then Dominic asked:
“Where is Alexander?””
Elena smiled faintly.
“Safe.””
“Will I meet him?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
She looked toward the hallway.
“Soon.””
Dominic followed her gaze.
Sophie and Ellie sat on the floor together, playing with Ellie’s wooden toy.
Two children who had grown up surrounded by secrets.
Two children who deserved a normal life.
Dominic watched them.
Then he understood something.
The Vale family had spent generations protecting an empire.
But maybe they should have been protecting each other.
Later, Dominic found the old photograph.
The one of Elena.
The one that started everything.
He turned it over.
The original message was still there.
*She knows where your daughter is.*
But beneath it, written in a different handwriting, was another sentence.
One Dominic had never noticed before.
A sentence hidden beneath the first.
His own handwriting.
From seven years ago.
*If you find this, forgive me. I chose the only way I knew to save us.*
Dominic stared at the words.
Then slowly folded the photograph.
For years, he thought losing his memory meant losing himself.
He was wrong.
Sometimes forgetting was not the end of a person.
Sometimes it was the only way they survived.
And now he remembered.
Not everything.
Not all at once.
But enough.
Enough to know the truth.
Enough to know who he was.
Enough to choose what came next.
The next morning, Dominic Vale walked into the company headquarters for the first time since the accident.
Everyone expected the old Dominic.
The ruthless one.
The man who never forgave.
Instead, he stood before his employees and said:
“For a long time, I thought protecting this company was the most important thing I could do.””
The room was silent.
“I was wrong.””
He looked at the people who had worked beneath him for years.
“Companies can be rebuilt.””
A pause.
“Families cannot.””
And for the first time in decades, the Vale name meant something different.
Not power.
Not fear.
Not secrets.
A promise.
That no child would ever have to hide again.
That no family member would ever disappear without someone searching.
And that the truth, no matter how painful, was always better than living inside a beautiful lie.
May you like
Because Dominic Vale had lost seven years.
But he had finally found himself.
