Chapter 9: The Daughter My Father Hid

Martin ran.

Not dramatically.

Not like the villains in movies.

He simply turned around and walked away.

Because people like Martin never believed they could lose.

They believed they were too intelligent.

Too careful.

Too important.

But he made one mistake.

He underestimated how much I had changed.

Daniel found him before he reached the elevator.

Security arrived minutes later.

But I didn’t care about Martin anymore.

Not yet.

I needed answers.

I needed the truth from the person who had carried it for twenty-five years.

Amelia.

We sat in silence.

Finally, she spoke.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For not telling you sooner.””

I looked down.

“You tried.””

“Yes.””

“And my father stopped you.””

“Yes.””

“And Martin.””

She nodded.

“I was trapped.””

I believed her.

That was the hardest part.

After everything.

After all the lies.

I believed her.

“Why did you come back now?””

She looked at the bracelet.

“Because I was running out of time.””

My heart tightened.

“What does that mean?””

She hesitated.

“My health isn’t good.””

I froze.

“How bad?””

She smiled sadly.

“Bad enough that I didn’t want to leave this world without telling you.””

I looked away.

Twenty-five years.

Gone.

Stolen.

“I should hate you.””

“I know.””

“But I don’t.””

Her eyes filled.

“I missed you.””

The words broke something inside me.

I reached across the table.

For the first time in twenty-five years, I held my sister’s hand.

“I missed you too.””

A week later, Martin’s files exposed everything.

The truth came out.

Richard Vale had built an empire on fear.

Martin had manipulated him.

Victor had covered their crimes.

And Amelia had spent twenty-five years running from people who wanted the truth buried.

But there was still one question.

Why did my father leave the final message?

Why did he wait until after his death?

Daniel found the answer.

“There’s another file.””

I looked at him.

“Where?””

“Hidden inside Valecrest’s original company records.””

We opened it together.

Inside was a letter.

My father’s handwriting.

My hands shook as I read.

Lucienne,

If you are reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth while I was alive.

I was afraid.

Not of losing my company.

Not of losing my money.

I was afraid of losing you.

I hated admitting that Amelia was stronger than me.

She saw the darkness I refused to see.

She tried to save you.

I tried to control everything.

And I destroyed the two people who loved me most.

I stopped reading.

Tears blurred the page.

Amelia quietly cried beside me.

The letter continued.

There is one final truth.

Amelia was never the secret I was hiding.

You were.

I looked at her.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I continued reading.

The person who knows the entire story is the one person you never questioned.

The one person who stayed close.

The one person who benefited from your pain.

My blood ran cold.

Martin.

But Martin was already exposed.

Who else?

I turned the page.

And saw another name.

A name that made my heart stop.

Because it wasn’t Martin.

It wasn’t Victor.

It wasn’t anyone I expected.

It was:

May you like

Adrian Vale.

My stepbrother.
