Chapter 5: The Man Behind The Mask

The photo changed everything.

Again.

I looked from my phone to Richard.

Then to Martin.

Everyone had a story.

Everyone had a secret.

And somehow, I was always standing in the middle of the explosion.

“Henry,” Richard said quietly.

I stepped away from him.

“No.””

His expression changed.

“You need to listen.””

“I listened when you accused me.””

“That was necessary.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice echoed through the room.

“Necessary. A test. A plan.””

I looked at Martin.

“And somehow every plan leaves me looking guilty.””

Martin smiled.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“You spent years thinking you were the smartest person in the room.””

He slowly lowered the gun.

“But you were just the most useful.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You’re the one who stole from the company.””

Martin laughed.

“Still pretending you don’t know?””

He walked closer.

“Richard, you built this company by destroying people.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

Martin placed the gun on the table.

Then pulled out a folder.

Inside were old newspaper articles.

Court cases.

Names.

People who lost everything after business decisions Richard made.

“You want everyone to believe you’re the hero,” Martin said.

“But you created this world.””

Richard said nothing.

And that silence bothered me.

Because Richard Whitmore always had an answer.

Always.

“Richard,” I said.

He looked at me.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

His eyes softened.

“Henry…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You brought me here because you needed someone to take the blame.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then tell me everything.””

The room became quiet.

Finally, Richard spoke.

“Six years ago, Daniel discovered the fraud.””

“Yes.””

“But he also discovered something else.””

“What?””

Richard looked at Martin.

Then back at me.

“The person who was stealing money was not working alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who was helping him?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Someone inside my family.””

I froze.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

The door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Exhausted.

But alive.

Daniel.

My brother.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

All the anger.

All the years.

All the unanswered questions.

They disappeared.

Then returned at once.

“You’re alive,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me sadly.

“I’m sorry.””

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to hug him.

I wanted answers.

Instead, I asked:

“Why did you let me believe you were gone?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Because he told me to.””

My face changed.

“What?””

Richard stepped forward.

“Henry, I can explain.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No more lies.””

He walked into the room.

“The person who planned the accident…”

He looked directly at Richard.

“Was Richard Whitmore.””

The air vanished from my lungs.

Martin smiled.

Richard looked shocked.

And Daniel continued.

“He didn’t want to kill himself.””

He pointed at Richard.

“He wanted to disappear.””

I stared at Richard.

“Why?””

Daniel pulled out a small device.

“A recording.””

He pressed play.

Richard’s own voice filled the room.

“If the company discovers the truth, everything falls apart.””

A younger Richard.

Angry.

Afraid.

“I need Henry to take control temporarily. Everyone trusts him.””

My hands went cold.

The recording continued.

“Once the investigation ends, I’ll return. Henry will take the blame.””

The audio stopped.

Nobody moved.

Richard looked at me.

“Henry, it wasn’t like that.””

But I no longer heard him.

Because the man who accused me of betrayal had spent years planning mine.

Then Daniel handed me another document.

“This is why I came back.””

I looked down.

It was a transfer agreement.

The entire company.

Every share.

Every asset.

Transferred into one name.

Mine.

At the bottom was a signature.

Richard Whitmore.

And beneath it was a handwritten note.

*If Henry learns the truth, he becomes the only person I can trust.*

I looked up.

Confused.

Because Richard had betrayed me.

But he had also prepared for my victory.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Henry, there’s one more thing you need to know.””

“What?””

He looked at Martin.

“Martin wasn’t working for Richard.””

Martin’s smile disappeared.

Daniel continued.

“He was working for the person who ordered the accident.””

The lights flickered.

And from the hallway came a familiar voice.

“Actually…”

Everyone turned.

A woman stepped into the room.

The board’s most respected member.

The person who had voted for me first.

Susan Blake.

May you like

She smiled.

“Martin was working for me.””
