Chapter 13: The Woman Who Stayed
For a moment, nobody breathed.
Not me.
Not my father.
Not even Celeste.
The words simply hung there between us.
*She knew it was me.*
I stared at Celeste, waiting for the next sentence.
The explanation.
The denial.
The anger.
Anything.
But she didn’t give me any of those.
She just stood there.
Like someone who had finally become too tired to run.
My father moved first.
“No.””
His voice was barely audible.
Celeste looked at him.
“Raymond.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t know what you’re saying.””
Her expression changed.
Not guilt.
Pain.
“After everything, you still think you can protect me.””
I felt something inside me snap.
“Protect you?””
My voice cut through the room.
“You?””
Celeste looked at me.
I stepped forward.
“You poisoned my mother.””
Her eyes filled.
“I made a terrible choice.””
“A choice?””
I laughed.
“My mother died.””
“I know.””
“You watched her get weaker.””
“I know.””
“You stood in this house and removed every picture of her.””
“I know.””
“You packed her life into a box.””
Her face collapsed slightly.
“I know.””
I hated that answer.
Because she wasn’t fighting.
She wasn’t pretending.
She was accepting it.
And somehow, that made it worse.
My father looked at her like he was seeing a stranger.
“Why?””
Celeste closed her eyes.
“Because I was afraid.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone says that.””
She looked at me.
“Because everyone was.””
“No.””
I pointed around the room.
“You were afraid of losing money.””
I looked at my father.
“He was afraid of losing his reputation.””
I looked at Daniel.
“He was afraid of getting caught.””
Then I looked back at Celeste.
“And you were afraid of what?””
She swallowed.
“Being alone.””
The answer was so small.
So human.
For one second, I understood.
And then I remembered my mother.
“I don’t care.””
Celeste nodded.
“I know.””
She walked toward the dining table.
Toward the files.
Toward the evidence of everything she had done.
“My first mistake was thinking Raymond loved me enough to choose me.””
My father looked away.
“My second mistake was thinking Elena would disappear quietly.””
The room went cold.
My hands curled into fists.
“She was my friend.””
The word shocked me.
Friend.
“You were friends?””
Celeste nodded.
“We met years before I ever came into this house.””
I looked at my father.
He looked ashamed.
“Your mother helped me when I was going through a divorce.””
I stared.
“She trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“And you betrayed her.””
Celeste’s eyes filled.
“Yes.””
No excuses.
No explanations.
Just yes.
Marissa stepped closer.
“Tell her the whole truth.””
Celeste looked at her.
“You don’t get to judge me.””
Marissa’s face hardened.
“I watched Elena die.””
Silence.
“I listened to her ask why her own husband couldn’t tell her the truth.””
My father looked away.
Celeste whispered:
“I know.””
“No.””
Marissa stepped closer.
“You don’t.””
The anger in her voice was different.
Not rage.
Grief.
“You were never the victim in this story.””
Celeste looked down.
“I know.””
I stared.
“Then why?””
Celeste took a deep breath.
“Because Elena found out about Daniel.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What?””
She looked at Daniel.
“She found the financial records.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“And then she found something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
Celeste continued.
“She found out Raymond knew.””
My father closed his eyes.
I felt betrayed all over again.
“You knew?””
He whispered:
“Yes.””
“About Daniel stealing?””
“Yes.””
“And you still stayed quiet?””
“I was trying to fix it.””
I shook my head.
“You always say that.””
“I was.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“You were trying to avoid losing everything.””
My father didn’t argue.
Because I was right.
Celeste continued.
“When Elena threatened to go to the police, Daniel came to me.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
“Because he knew Elena trusted me.””
The room went silent.
“He wanted me to convince her to stop.””
“And you did.””
Celeste nodded.
“At first.””
I stared.
“At first?””
She looked at the floor.
“I went to Elena’s hospital room.””
My chest tightened.
“The night she collapsed?””
“Yes.””
“What did you say?””
Her eyes filled.
“I told her Raymond would leave me if she exposed everything.””
I felt sick.
“And?””
“She told me something I never forgot.””
“What?””
Celeste looked at me.
“She said, ‘If he leaves because he has to face the truth, then he was never mine to keep.’”
Nobody spoke.
Because that sounded exactly like my mother.
Strong.
Kind.
Broken.
“But then what happened?”” I asked.
Celeste’s face changed.
“I brought her medication.””
The room froze.
Marissa looked at her.
“You changed the dosage.””
Celeste nodded.
A tear fell.
“Yes.””
My father stumbled backward.
“No.””
“I didn’t know what would happen.””
“You poisoned her.””
“I know.””
“You killed her.””
Celeste closed her eyes.
“I know.””
The pain in my father’s face was unbearable.
Because he was finally seeing the truth.
Not the version he wanted.
The real one.
Celeste looked at me.
“Your mother knew.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She knew something was wrong.””
“How?””
“She saw the bottle.””
My heart pounded.
“And?””
“She switched the medication.””
Everyone stared.
“What?””
Celeste whispered:
“Your mother knew I was dangerous.””
The room went silent.
“Then why didn’t she tell anyone?””
Celeste looked at the portrait of my mother.
“Because Elena was still trying to save me.””
My throat tightened.
That sounded impossible.
But it sounded like my mother.
Celeste wiped her face.
“She recorded everything.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“She knew someone would need proof.””
Marissa stepped forward.
“Where is the recording?””
Celeste looked toward the hallway.
Behind the wall.
“The same place she hid the others.””
My father looked at me.
And suddenly, I understood.
The last piece.
The one my mother had protected until the end.
Celeste whispered:
“But there’s something you need to know before you find it.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her voice dropped.
“Your mother didn’t want Celeste arrested.””
Everyone froze.
“She wanted you to know why she forgave her.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Celeste looked at me.
“Because the person Elena blamed most wasn’t me.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“Who was it?””
May you like
Celeste’s eyes moved toward Raymond.
And my father looked away.
