Chapter 5: The Letter My Daughter Hid
I didn’t sleep that night.
Neither did Lily.
She stayed curled beside me, holding the letter against her chest.
The entire time, she refused to let go.
“Sweetheart,” I whispered, “where did you get that?””
She looked nervous.
“Mommy said I wasn’t allowed to show anyone.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Because she said Daddy would be mad.””
I took her hand.
“I could never be mad at you.””
Slowly, she gave me the letter.
It was folded many times.
The paper was worn.
Like it had been opened and closed over and over.
My name was written on the front.
Daddy.
Not Mark.
Daddy.
I opened it carefully.
The handwriting was messy.
A child’s handwriting.
But every word hurt.
“Daddy, I’m sorry I’m bad.””
I stopped reading.
My eyes blurred.
Lily watched me.
“I’m not bad, right?””
I immediately pulled her into my arms.
“No.””
My voice broke.
“You are the best thing in my life.””
She started crying.
“She said you loved your work more than me.””
I closed my eyes.
Every business trip.
Every missed bedtime.
Every moment I wasn’t there.
Someone had taken my absence and turned it into a weapon.
I read the rest.
“Mommy says when you come home, you will leave again. She says if I tell you things, you will be angry and go away.””
I looked at the clock.
Three in the morning.
And I made a decision.
I was done trying to save a marriage that was hurting my child.
The next morning, I confronted Elise.
She was sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee.
Like it was any normal day.
“You used my daughter’s fear against her.””
She didn’t look surprised.
“I knew you would find the letter.””
That shocked me.
“What?””
She smiled faintly.
“She wanted you to see it.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Elise leaned back.
“Lily is more aware than you think.””
I felt anger rise.
“She’s six.””
“She knows how to manipulate.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Stop.””
She looked at me.
“Stop what?””
“Talking about our daughter like she’s the enemy.””
For the first time, Elise looked genuinely annoyed.
“You always choose her.””
I stared at her.
“She’s our child.””
“No.””
The way she said it made my blood run cold.
“She’s your child.””
Silence.
I understood.
Elise had never seen Lily as someone to protect.
She saw her as something standing between us.
Between her and the life she wanted.
My lawyer arrived an hour later.
Elise’s expression changed when she saw him.
“You’re serious?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“You’re filing for divorce?””
I looked at my daughter sitting upstairs with Rosa.
“Yes.””
Elise stood.
“You’ll regret this.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“I regret not seeing it sooner.””
She stepped closer.
“You think people will believe you?””
I said nothing.
Because I didn’t need to.
Andrew placed a folder on the table.
Inside were the security videos.
The financial records.
The custody documents.
And the photographs.
Elise’s face changed.
“You recorded me?””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You recorded yourself.””
She became quiet.
Then her phone buzzed.
She checked it.
Her face went pale.
I noticed.
“Daniel?””
She didn’t answer.
The phone buzzed again.
This time, I saw the message.
*We need to talk. The plan failed.*
My heart sank.
Plan.
There it was.
The word that proved everything.
I looked at Elise.
“What plan?””
She didn’t respond.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Tall.
Expensively dressed.
Confident.
Daniel.
He looked at me.
Then at Elise.
And the confidence disappeared.
Because he realized something.
He wasn’t walking into a private conversation.
He was walking into the end of everything.
May you like
And the first words out of his mouth were:
“Mark… you need to know what Elise never told you.””
