Chapter 8: The Brother Who Called Himself Adrian Cole

Marcus drove back to Atlanta with Rebecca's letter locked in the glove compartment.

The document naming Daniel Cole as Michael's biological father had changed the shape of the mystery, but it had not solved it. His father had apparently helped conceal a child's identity, and the reasons for doing so remained tangled in an old military inquiry.

Rebecca had given him a telephone number for the last lawyer who had helped her search for Michael. The lawyer had retired, and the office number no longer worked.

Every path seemed to lead to another closed door.

By the time Marcus reached Marietta, the sun was setting.

He parked outside his house and remained behind the wheel for several minutes.

He could see the kitchen light through the front window.

Danielle was home.

He had not decided what to say to her. Part of him wanted to demand that she leave. Another part wanted to sit at the kitchen table and ask her to tell him everything from the beginning, without omissions or explanations designed to soften the truth.

He finally stepped out of the truck.

When he entered the house, Danielle stood near the stove, stirring a pot of soup.

She turned at the sound of the door.

“Marcus.””

He set his keys on the counter.

“Rebecca says David wasn't Michael's biological father.””

Danielle slowly lowered the spoon.

“You met her?””

“Yes.””

“What did she tell you?””

He removed the letter from his bag and placed it on the table.

“Read it.””

Danielle sat and unfolded the paper.

As her eyes moved across the lines, her expression changed. She looked first confused, then startled, and finally frightened.

“Daniel Cole,” she whispered.

“Adrian's father.””

She nodded.

“Then Michael's identity was changed to hide Daniel's name.””

“That's what the documents suggest.””

Danielle pressed the letter flat against the table.

“My father needs to see this.””

“Why?””

“Because he has a copy of the original investigation report. He said there was a discrepancy between the birth certificate and the military file.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You knew about that?””

“I knew there was a discrepancy. I didn't know what it meant.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know whether the information was reliable.””

He pulled out the chair opposite her.

“Danielle, you have to stop deciding which truths I'm allowed to know.””

She looked down.

“You're right.””

He waited for an excuse.

None came.

“I should have told you everything from the beginning,” she said.

“About Adrian, about Michael, about my father's search. I was afraid that once you learned about the affair, you'd never listen to anything else I had to say.””

“That was your decision to make?””

“No.””

“Then why did you make it?””

“Because I was selfish. I wanted to protect my marriage without accepting what I'd done to it.””

Marcus looked away.

It was the first explanation that did not attempt to turn her betrayal into something noble.

He respected the honesty.

He still couldn't forgive her.

“Did Adrian know his father was Michael's biological father?”” he asked.

Danielle shook her head.

“Not until recently. He told me he found a letter from his mother mentioning a boy named Michael, but he didn't understand the connection at first.””

“Then why did he get involved with you?””

“He was looking for someone who could help him understand the records. My father had access to the veterans' archives, and I offered to help.””

“And the affair?””

She closed her eyes.

“We became close. I was lonely, and he was struggling with his father's disappearance. We crossed a line. I knew it was wrong, and I kept going anyway.””

Marcus stared at the table.

There was no explanation that made the affair acceptable. But he was beginning to understand that the search for Michael had connected these families long before the affair began.

“Did Adrian ever threaten you?”” he asked.

“No.””

“Did he tell you to hide the pregnancy?””

“No. He wanted me to tell you the truth.””

“Then why did he send that message saying we needed to talk before I learned the truth?””

Danielle reached for her phone.

“He said he had discovered something about the records. He thought the paternity question might be connected to the family investigation.””

“What did he discover?””

She scrolled through the messages and handed him the phone.

Marcus read the exchange.

Adrian had written that he wanted to meet because he had found a second birth record. Danielle had replied that she would not see him alone again. He had then sent a photograph of a document with several lines obscured.

At the bottom was a name.

*Michael David Williams.*

Marcus looked up.

“Why does this record use my father's middle name?””

“I don't know.””

He studied the image.

The date of birth matched the child in Rebecca's photograph. The location matched the hospital listed in the original file. But the name had been changed from Michael Cole to Michael Williams, and the father's name had been replaced.

“Did you show this to your father?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

“He said it proved someone had deliberately changed the records.””

“Did he tell you who?””

“No.””

Marcus handed back the phone.

“I want to meet Adrian again.””

Danielle's face tightened.

“Please be careful.””

“I'm not going to fight him.””

“I didn't mean that.””

“Then what did you mean?””

She hesitated.

“Adrian has been acting strangely since he found the records. He keeps saying that his father might still be alive.””

Marcus thought of Rebecca's words.

Michael may be alive.

“Does he think he's Michael?””

Danielle went pale.

“No. That would be impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Adrian has a birth certificate. He has school records. He grew up with his mother.””

“Those records could be wrong.””

She looked at him, horrified.

“You think Adrian might actually be Michael?””

“I think we need to establish the truth before we rule anything out.””

He picked up his phone and called Adrian.

The call went to voicemail.

Marcus left a message asking him to meet the next morning.

Then he turned toward the stairs.

“I'm sleeping in the guest room again.””

Danielle nodded.

“I understand.””

He paused at the doorway.

“One more thing. Have you told anyone about the ultrasound?””

“No.””

“Good. We need to speak with Dr. Carter about the dates and arrange the appropriate follow-up. I'm not going to make assumptions about the baby based on an argument or a document.””

Danielle looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“Thank you.””

“Don't thank me for being reasonable.””

He went upstairs.

The next morning, Adrian arrived at Marcus's house shortly after nine.

He stood on the porch with a thick folder under his arm. His expression was tense, and he kept looking over his shoulder as if expecting someone to follow him.

Marcus opened the door.

“Come in.””

Adrian stepped inside.

Danielle was in the kitchen, but she did not approach him. She remained near the counter, her hands wrapped around a mug of tea.

Marcus led Adrian into the living room.

“Tell me what you found.””

Adrian placed the folder on the coffee table.

“My aunt Patricia sent me more documents from my mother's house. She found them in a box she'd stored after my mother died.””

Marcus opened the folder.

The first page was a letter from Daniel Cole, dated several months before Michael's birth.

The handwriting was cramped, the ink faded.

Rebecca,

If anything happens to me, do not believe anyone who tells you I abandoned you or the child. David knows the truth. He has agreed to help me protect Michael until I can return.

Marcus read the letter twice.

“Until you can return,” he said.

“Your father planned to come back.””

Adrian nodded.

“My aunt says Daniel was investigating the same military incident David mentioned. He believed someone had altered records to conceal the death of a soldier.””

“Who died?””

“We don't know. The original report is missing.””

Marcus turned to the next page.

It was a personnel file containing Daniel's name, service number, and a note about a discharge that did not match the date of his supposed death.

“Your father may not have died when your mother believed he did,” Marcus said.

“That's what I think.””

“Then where did he go?””

Adrian shook his head.

“My mother spent years trying to find out. She received one letter after I was born. It said Daniel was alive and that he would contact us when it was safe.””

“Did he ever contact you?””

“No.””

Marcus looked up.

“Did your mother believe the letter?””

“She wanted to.””

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“She died believing he had abandoned us.””

Marcus felt an unexpected surge of sympathy. Whatever Adrian had done with Danielle, he had grown up with a family mystery of his own.

But sympathy could not replace accountability.

“Why did you tell Danielle you thought the baby might not be mine?”” Marcus asked.

Adrian looked at him directly.

“Because the dates didn't make sense, and because I didn't want either of us to pretend certainty where there wasn't any.””

“Did you think the baby was yours?””

“I thought it was possible.””

“Did you tell Danielle that?””

“Yes.””

“Did you want her to leave me?””

Adrian hesitated.

“At one point, I wanted her to choose me. I won't lie about that.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Did you know she was married when you started seeing her?””

“Yes.””

“Then you don't get to pretend you were simply helping her.””

“I know.””

Adrian's voice grew quieter.

“I made a selfish decision. I regret it.””

Marcus nodded once.

“That's between you and your conscience. What matters now is what you found.””

Adrian removed a final document from the folder.

It was a typed report with a handwritten note attached.

The note contained a name.

*Michael Williams.*

Beneath it was a second line.

*Possible identity transfer: Daniel Cole's son placed under David Williams's protection.*

Marcus stared at the page.

“Possible identity transfer?””

Adrian pointed to the report.

“The inquiry investigators believed the child had been given a new identity. They suspected David was involved in arranging it.””

“Was he?””

“We don't know.””

Marcus read the page again.

The report mentioned a witness who had been interviewed shortly after the incident. The witness's name had been partially blacked out, but the first initial remained visible.

*T. Reed.*

Thomas Reed.

Danielle's father.

Marcus looked toward the kitchen.

Danielle had gone still.

“Your father was a witness?”” Marcus asked.

She nodded slowly.

“He told me he helped Rebecca find the records. He never said he'd been involved in the original investigation.””

Marcus picked up his phone and called Thomas.

The older man answered immediately.

“Marcus?””

“I have a report with your name on it. It says you were interviewed during the original investigation.””

Silence.

Then Thomas sighed.

“I was waiting for this conversation.””

“Then start talking.””

“I was a young civilian clerk attached to the installation where David and Daniel served. I helped process personnel records. I discovered that a report had been altered after a soldier died.””

“Who altered it?””

“I never found out.””

“What happened to Daniel Cole?””

“I don't know.””

“Did David take Michael?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Yes.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“Did Rebecca agree?””

“Not to a permanent separation. She agreed to let David move the child while we tried to understand the danger.””

“Why didn't anyone return him?””

“Because the investigation collapsed. The witness statements disappeared. Daniel was listed as dead, and David believed someone would use the child to force Rebecca to remain silent.””

Marcus stared at the document.

“So you let a mother spend decades searching for her son because you were afraid.””

Thomas's voice cracked.

“Yes.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Why didn't you tell Danielle?””

“I thought I could find Michael before the truth came out. I wanted to give Rebecca an answer, not another reason to suffer.””

“And the affair?””

Thomas went silent.

“Did you know Adrian was involved with my wife?””

“No. I learned that yesterday.””

“Then you understand why I'm done accepting secrets from your family.””

“I do.””

Marcus ended the call.

Adrian sat with his hands clasped between his knees.

For the first time, he looked less like a man defending himself and more like someone who had discovered that his life had been built around a story he did not understand.

“My father may be alive,” he whispered.

“Michael may be alive. And your father might have spent his life protecting a child he wasn't related to.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Or he might have made a terrible mistake and never found the courage to correct it.””

Adrian nodded.

“That's possible.””

Marcus turned the report over.

On the back was a handwritten note, apparently added years later.

If the child is ever found, tell him the truth about his father.

Marcus read the sentence aloud.

Adrian looked up sharply.

“My father wrote that.””

“Are you sure?””

“I recognize his handwriting.””

Marcus held the page closer to the light.

At the bottom of the note was a location and a date.

Savannah.

October 2004.

The date was twenty-two years earlier than the present day, and the location was an address less than three miles from Rebecca's house.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Your father may have returned.””

Adrian stood so quickly that the folder slid from his lap.

“Then we need to find him.””

Marcus picked up the page.

But before either man could move, Danielle appeared in the doorway holding her phone.

Her face was pale.

“Marcus,” she said, “my father just called.””

He turned.

“What did he say?””

She swallowed.

“He found a record showing that Michael was adopted by a family in Savannah.””

Marcus felt his heart begin to pound.

“What family?””

Danielle looked at Adrian.

Then she looked at Marcus.

“His name was changed again after the adoption.””

Adrian's expression tightened.

“What was the new name?””

Danielle's voice broke.

“Daniel Reed.””

Marcus stared at her.

Thomas Reed's surname.

The same man who had spent years helping Rebecca search for the child.

The same man who had concealed his involvement in the original inquiry.

Adrian took a step toward her.

“Are you saying Michael was raised by your father?””

Danielle shook her head.

“No. I'm saying my father found the adoption record. It lists the family who took him in.””

She turned the phone toward them.

At the bottom of the page was a handwritten address.

And beneath it, in a separate field, was the name of the adoptive father.

*Daniel Cole.*

Adrian went completely still.

“That can't be right,” he whispered.

Marcus looked from the document to Adrian.

If the record was authentic, the man who had supposedly died before Adrian could remember him had adopted the child he had fathered with Rebecca.

But that raised a question no one in the room could answer.

May you like

If Daniel Cole had adopted Michael under his own name, why had he never returned to Rebecca?

And why had Adrian spent his entire life believing his father was dead?
