Chapter 3: The Father Who Came Back

Three days before graduation, Emily had been sitting at a coffee shop with Daniel.

I learned that later.

She told me every detail.

Every word.

Every lie.

Daniel had arrived with expensive clothes, a new watch, and stories about the life he had built.

He told Emily he regretted missing her childhood.

He told her he wanted to make up for lost time.

And Emily believed him.

Because children, even grown children, still want their parents to choose them.

Daniel knew that.

He used it.

“I want to do something special for you,” he had told her.

Emily smiled.

“Like what?””

“The Europe trip.””

Her eyes lit up.

“You’re serious?””

“Of course.””

She had hugged him.

And maybe that was the moment everything changed.

Because Daniel wanted to be the hero.

But he didn’t want to pay the price of being one.

When the bill came, he disappeared.

When Emily asked about the apartment deposit, he changed the subject.

When graduation approached, he suddenly became interested in one thing.

The photograph.

The perfect image.

The proud father standing beside his successful daughter.

Not the years before.

Not the sacrifices.

Just the moment everyone could see.

When Emily told me this, I sat quietly.

I wasn’t angry.

I was disappointed.

There is a difference.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I asked.

She looked down.

“Because I was embarrassed.””

We were sitting in my kitchen.

The same kitchen where I taught her how to bake cookies.

The same kitchen where she announced her first boyfriend.

The same kitchen where she once told me:

“You’re the best dad in the world.””

Now she was sitting across from me, crying.

“I thought Daniel finally wanted me.””

I softened.

“Emily…”

“No, I did.””

She wiped her face.

“I spent my whole life wondering why he left.””

I nodded.

“And when he came back, I wanted to believe it meant something.””

I understood.

More than she knew.

Because I had spent years trying to fill a space someone else had created.

But I never wanted to replace him.

I only wanted to love her.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For making you feel like you weren’t my father.””

I took a breath.

“That’s not something you fix with an apology.””

She looked hurt.

“I know.””

The truth was, I didn’t know how to repair something I never thought could break.

Later that evening, Emily asked me to come with her somewhere.

“Where?””

“Daniel’s house.””

I hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because there’s something you need to see.””

Daniel lived in a large house across town.

The kind of place that looked impressive from the outside.

But inside, everything felt cold.

Emily knocked.

Daniel opened the door.

His smile disappeared when he saw me.

“Mark?””

Emily stepped forward.

“We need to talk.””

Daniel looked nervous.

“About what?””

She held up a folder.

“The money.””

His expression changed.

“What money?””

“The money you promised.””

Silence.

Then Daniel laughed.

“I think there’s been a misunderstanding.””

Emily stared at him.

“No.””

Her voice was stronger than I had heard in years.

“There hasn’t.””

Daniel looked at me.

“This is your idea, isn’t it?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He scoffed.

“Of course.””

Emily stepped between us.

“Stop.””

Daniel looked shocked.

She continued.

“You came back because you wanted everyone to see you as my father.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then why did you care more about the picture than everything else?””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You’re being emotional.””

And that was when Emily realized something.

He wasn’t sorry.

Not really.

The man she wanted to become a father…

Never came back to be one.

He came back to look like one.

Then Daniel reached into a drawer and pulled out a document.

A document with my name written on it.

He smiled.

“Maybe you should ask Mark why he never told you the truth.””

My heart stopped.

Emily looked at me.

“What truth?””

Daniel handed her the paper.

May you like

And the moment she read the first line…

Everything changed.
