Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Door

The key was cold against Adrian's palm.
Its blue tag had been worn almost white at the edges, but a few faded letters remained visible.
*C.C.*
Camille Cole.
Adrian looked at Victoria.
“What do you mean, someone else disappeared?””
Victoria's eyes moved toward the hallway.
“Not here.””
“Here is exactly where we're going to have this conversation.””
“Adrian, please.””
He had heard that tone before. It was the voice she used when she wanted to turn a confrontation into a private misunderstanding, when she wanted him to believe that her discomfort mattered more than the truth.
He was finished listening to it.
“You have two choices,” he said.
“You can tell me what happened, or I can open that door and find out for myself.””
Victoria looked at the key.
Then she laughed once, without humor.
“You think a locked door is going to explain three years of lies?””
“No. But it might tell me where to start.””
She stepped aside.
“Then open it.””
Adrian inserted the key.
It turned with a dry metallic click.
The concealed door opened inward.
A stale smell drifted into the library, a mixture of dust, old fabric, and something faintly medicinal. Marcus switched on his flashlight, illuminating a narrow room barely large enough for a desk, a chair, and a filing cabinet.
The walls were lined with soundproofing panels.
Adrian stopped in the doorway.
“What the hell is this?””
Victoria stood behind him.
“A storage room.””
He turned.
“Don't insult me.””
Inside, the desk held a small lamp, a stack of notebooks, and a telephone with no visible connection to the wall. A narrow cot stood against the far wall. Beside it sat a glass of water, long dried at the bottom, and a child's wooden rattle.
Adrian picked up the rattle.
Nathan had owned one almost identical to it when he was a baby.
He turned it over.
A tiny handwritten label had been attached to the handle.
*NATHAN — 3 DAYS OLD.*
Adrian's stomach lurched.
“Why is my son's rattle in here?””
Victoria said nothing.
He moved toward the filing cabinet and pulled open the top drawer.
Inside were medical forms, photocopies of identification cards, and envelopes labeled with dates.
The first document carried Camille's name.
The second carried his.
The third listed an unnamed female infant.
Adrian stopped breathing.
He pulled it free.
The form described a baby born at 2:14 a.m. on the day Nathan was delivered. The mother's name had been left blank. The father's name was recorded as Adrian Cole.
A handwritten note appeared beneath the admission details.
*Transfer authorized by V.H. No family contact permitted.*
Adrian turned slowly toward Victoria.
“What is this?””
Her lips parted.
“Put it down.””
“Who is the baby?””
“Adrian—”
“WHO IS THE BABY?””
His shout echoed through the narrow room.
Victoria recoiled.
Marcus stepped forward, but Adrian raised a hand, signaling him to stay back.
He looked down at the document again.
The infant had been admitted to a hospital under a temporary identity, then transferred to an unidentified facility. No discharge record was attached.
Another sheet listed a second birth certificate number.
A number that did not match Nathan's.
Adrian felt sick.
“Did Camille have twins?””
Victoria's silence stretched.
He looked up.
“Did she have another child?””
Victoria swallowed.
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
Adrian gripped the filing cabinet.
“Where is that child?””
“I don't know.””
“You just admitted you authorized the transfer.””
“I signed the paperwork.””
“Where is the baby?””
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
“I was told the child had died.””
“By whom?””
She shook her head.
“By the doctor who handled the delivery.””
“Name.””
“I don't remember.””
“Then look at the paperwork!””
He thrust the form toward her.
Victoria stared at it.
Her face had become frighteningly still.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Adrian stared at her in disbelief.
“From my own child?””
“You were already falling apart. Camille was unstable. The delivery was complicated. There were complications with both babies.””
“Both babies?””
Victoria's voice broke.
“Nathan was born first. The second baby wasn't breathing properly. Camille lost consciousness. The doctors told us there was almost no chance of survival.””
“Who told you?””
“Dr. Warren.””
“Full name.””
“Richard Warren.””
Adrian immediately turned to Marcus.
“Find him.””
Marcus took out his phone.
Victoria stepped forward.
“Adrian, listen to me. I made decisions because someone had to. You were in the hallway, crying, begging the doctors to save Camille. You couldn't even hold Nathan without shaking.””
Adrian looked at her.
“And you decided I didn't deserve to know my second child existed?””
“I thought I was saving you from another loss.””
“You don't get to decide which losses I can survive!””
The words struck the room like a slap.
Victoria flinched.
For several seconds, she looked genuinely wounded.
Then her expression hardened.
“You think you're the only person who suffered?””
Adrian said nothing.
She gestured toward the cot.
“I spent nights in this room while Camille was being treated. I listened to her scream for you. I watched her refuse medication because she believed someone was trying to poison her. I watched her tear apart every room she was placed in because she thought she could escape.””
Adrian stared at her.
“You kept Camille in this house?””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Not at first.””
“Tell me.””
“She was brought here after the hospital. The doctors said she needed somewhere familiar. Somewhere private.””
“Who brought her?””
“I did.””
“Under whose authority?””
Victoria looked at the forged authorization on the desk.
“Yours.””
Adrian felt a surge of rage so intense that he had to grip the edge of the desk to steady himself.
“You forged my signature.””
“I had to.””
“No, you didn't.””
“You weren't thinking clearly!””
“And that gave you the right to imprison my wife?””
Victoria's eyes flashed.
“She was going to expose everything!””
The room fell silent.
Adrian stared at her.
There it was.
Not concern.
Not protection.
Fear.
“What was she going to expose?””
Victoria's mouth opened, then closed.
He picked up one of the notebooks.
The first pages contained lists of dates, payments, and names. Several entries referenced the Cole Foundation. Others mentioned shell companies and transfers to accounts in the Caribbean.
Adrian recognized some of the company names.
They belonged to contractors his business had used during a major development project three years earlier.
“Did you steal money from my company?””
Victoria shook her head.
“It's more complicated than that.””
“Did you?””
“I moved funds to cover losses. The company was on the edge of a financial disaster, and your board was going to remove you. I kept everything from collapsing.””
“You stole from a charitable foundation.””
“I borrowed the money.””
“Without permission.””
“I was going to return it.””
Adrian looked at the notebook.
“How much?””
Victoria's silence answered him.
He turned several pages and found a list of transfers totaling more than four million dollars.
His hands began to shake.
“You used my wife's name.””
“She discovered the accounts.””
“So you made her disappear.””
Victoria's face crumpled.
“I didn't intend for any of this to happen.””
“What did you intend?””
She looked at the floor.
“I wanted time.””
“Time for what?””
“To fix the accounts. To return the money. To make sure the company survived.””
Adrian let out a bitter laugh.
“You had three years.””
“And I couldn't fix it.””
The admission hung between them.
He looked at the documents again.
A small envelope lay at the bottom of the drawer. It was sealed with a strip of blue tape.
Adrian opened it.
Inside was a photograph of two newborn babies lying side by side in a hospital bassinet.
One wore a blue bracelet.
The other wore a yellow one.
On the back, in Camille's handwriting, were the words:
*My boys. Nathan and Noah.*
Adrian stared at the photograph.
His knees weakened.
“Noah.””
Victoria looked away.
“That's what Camille wanted to name him.””
Adrian's eyes filled with tears.
“You told me he died.””
“The doctors told me he wouldn't survive.””
“Then why is there a transfer record?””
Victoria didn't answer.
He held the photograph against his chest.
For three years, he had believed Nathan was his only child. He had watched the boy grow, celebrated his birthdays, and sat beside him when nightmares woke him in the middle of the night.
All the while, another child might have been alive somewhere.
His son.
His other son.
Adrian turned back to Victoria.
“Where is Noah?””
“I don't know.””
“Who took him?””
“I don't know!””
“Stop lying!””
Victoria burst into tears.
“I was told he was being placed with a family who could care for him. I was told it was temporary. I thought he was going to be safe.””
“Who told you?””
She shook her head violently.
“I don't know!””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You signed the papers. You controlled the transfers. You forged my name. You don't get to tell me you don't know.””
Victoria backed into the desk.
“I never wanted to hurt the children.””
“Then why did you keep their mother locked away?””
Victoria's face twisted.
“Because Camille wouldn't stop!””
The confession came out raw and furious.
“She kept asking about the money. She kept threatening to go to the police. She said she would destroy everything I'd worked for. She said she would take you away from me.””
Adrian stared at her.
“So you decided to take everything from her first.””
Victoria shook her head.
“I thought if she had time to recover, she would understand.””
“You made her believe I had abandoned her.””
“I was trying to keep her calm.””
“You told her I wanted her gone.””
“She wouldn't listen to anyone else!””
“You told my son his mother was dead.””
Victoria pressed both hands against her face.
“I know.””
“You let him cry himself to sleep every night.””
“I know!””
“You watched him look at every woman who entered this house, hoping one of them might be his mother.””
Victoria's hands dropped.
For the first time, she had no defense.
Adrian looked at her and saw a stranger.
Not because she had become cruel in that moment, but because he finally understood what she had been willing to do when nobody was watching.
Marcus returned to the doorway.
“Sir, I found Dr. Warren's full name and a current address. But there's a problem.””
Adrian looked up.
“What?””
“Richard Warren died eighteen months ago.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
Marcus continued.
“However, his former practice manager is still alive. She lives in Philadelphia, and she has agreed to speak with us.””
Adrian looked at the photograph of the twins.
“Get the car ready.””
Victoria moved toward him.
“Adrian, please. Don't involve the police yet.””
He turned.
“Why?””
“Because if you do, they'll take everything. The house, the company, the foundation. Everything we built.””
He stared at her.
“Everything you stole.””
“Adrian, I love you.””
He stepped away from her.
“No. You love the life you thought I could give you.””
Victoria's expression hardened.
“You're making a mistake.””
“Maybe. But it will be my mistake to make.””
He handed the notebook to Marcus.
“Secure all of this. Photograph the room before anyone touches anything else. Contact our independent attorney, and make sure the authorities receive copies of the records.””
Marcus nodded.
Victoria's eyes widened.
“You can't do that!””
“I can, and I will.””
She lunged toward the notebook.
Marcus caught her wrist before she reached it.
“Don't touch anything, ma'am.””
Victoria stared at him, breathing hard.
Then she looked at Adrian.
“You think Camille will forgive you?””
The question stopped him.
Victoria wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.
“She'll never forgive you for believing me. She'll never forgive you for letting her disappear. And when she finds out you didn't save Noah, she'll never let you near either of your sons again.””
Adrian's face tightened.
“Get out.””
Victoria stared at him.
“What?””
“Leave my house.””
“You can't throw me out.””
“I just did.””
For a moment, she looked as though she might argue.
Then she picked up her handbag and walked toward the door.
At the threshold, she turned back.
“You have no idea who took Noah.””
Adrian said nothing.
Victoria's voice dropped to a whisper.
“And if you find out, you'll understand why I was afraid to tell you.””
She left.
The front door slammed.
Adrian stood alone in the hidden room, holding the photograph of his two newborn sons.
Then his phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
He answered.
“Mr. Cole?”” a woman asked.
“Yes.””
“My name is Denise Harper. I worked for Dr. Warren until his practice closed. Marcus told me you found the records.””
“Do you know where my son is?””
There was a long pause.
“I know where the second baby was sent.””
Adrian gripped the phone.
“Where?””
The woman drew a shaky breath.
“Before I tell you, there's something you need to understand. Noah wasn't placed with a stranger.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Then who took him?””
Her answer was barely audible.
“Someone who had been living in your house for months.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Adrian looked toward the door Victoria had just walked through.
“Who?””
Denise hesitated.
Then she spoke a name.
May you like
And Adrian realized the next secret would not merely destroy his relationship with Victoria.
It would change everything he believed about his own family.
