Chapter 7: The Son Who Grew Up Under Another Name

“Your mother took him.””

Adrian stood motionless in the hidden room, the phone pressed against his ear.

For several seconds, he thought he had misunderstood.

“My mother?”” he repeated.

On the other end, Denise Harper exhaled shakily.

“Eleanor Cole came to Dr. Warren's office the morning after the twins were born. She said you had authorized her to make arrangements for the second child.””

Adrian's fingers tightened around the phone.

“My mother has been dead for seven years.””

“I know that now,” Denise replied.

“But she was alive when the paperwork was filed. She was there in person. I remember her because she brought a silver baby bracelet and asked us to put it on the child before the transfer.””

Adrian looked down at the photograph of Nathan and Noah.

Two babies.

Two bracelets.

Two sons.

And someone had decided that only one of them deserved to come home.

“Where did she take him?”” Adrian demanded.

“I don't know the exact address. Dr. Warren handled the placement personally. He told us the baby was going to a family that could give him a stable upbringing.””

“Did my mother know the child was mine?””

“Yes.””

“Did she know Camille was alive?””

Denise went quiet.

“Mr. Cole, I can't answer that.””

“Try.””

“I heard her arguing with Dr. Warren. She said Camille couldn't be allowed to raise the boys. She said your family had already suffered enough.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

His mother had always been proud of the Cole name. She believed family problems belonged behind closed doors, that appearances mattered more than apologies, and that a man who inherited a fortune inherited the obligation to protect it.

She had disapproved of Camille from the beginning.

She called her impulsive. Unrefined. Unsuitable.

But Adrian had never imagined she could take his child.

“Did my mother arrange the transfer herself?”” he asked.

“She signed the papers. Dr. Warren arranged the rest.””

“Was there a family name?””

Denise hesitated.

Then she said, “The name on the placement form was Brooks.””

Adrian slowly turned toward Evelyn, who stood beside the doorway.

Her face had gone pale.

“Brooks?”” he whispered.

Denise continued.

“I thought the family was connected to Camille. The woman who came to collect the baby was introduced as a relative. I remember her because she cried when she held him.””

Adrian's stomach twisted.

“What was her first name?””

“I believe it was Sarah.””

Evelyn made a small sound.

Adrian looked at her.

“Do you know someone named Sarah Brooks?””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“My sister.””

The words seemed to drain the air from the room.

Adrian stared at her.

“Your sister?””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“Sarah was married when Camille disappeared. She and her husband had been trying to have a baby for years. They eventually adopted a little boy.””

She pressed a hand over her mouth.

“They told me he was adopted through a private agency. They never told me where he came from.””

Adrian could barely speak.

“How old is he?””

“Three.””

“What is his name?””

Evelyn looked down.

“Noah.””

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Evelyn stepped backward and gripped the doorframe.

“No. No, that can't be right.””

Adrian approached her carefully.

“Evelyn—”

“My sister would have told me.””

“Maybe she didn't know.””

“She held him. She raised him. She watched him grow.”” Evelyn's voice cracked.

“She let me work in your house, knowing I was searching for Camille, and she never said a word.””

Adrian felt the same betrayal rising inside him.

He wanted answers.

He wanted to demand them from everyone who had participated in the deception.

But Evelyn was shaking.

He reached for a chair and pulled it toward her.

“Sit down.””

“I need to call her.””

“Not yet.””

She looked at him sharply.

“That's my nephew.””

“And that's my son.””

The words came out harder than he intended.

Evelyn recoiled.

Adrian immediately regretted them.

He lowered his voice.

“I'm sorry. I didn't mean that the way it sounded.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“No. You're right. He's your son.

But he's also the little boy my sister brought home. I can't pretend I don't love him.””

“You don't have to.””

For several seconds, they looked at each other.

Then Adrian held out his phone.

“Call her. Put it on speaker.””

Evelyn dialed.

The phone rang four times.

A woman answered.

“Evie? Is everything okay?””

Evelyn's lips trembled.

“Sarah, where is Noah?””

Silence.

Then a sharp breath.

“Why are you asking me that?””

“Because I need you to tell me the truth.””

“Evie, I don't know what you're talking about.””

“Is Noah adopted?””

“Yes.””

“Where did he come from?””

Another silence.

When Sarah spoke again, her voice had changed.

“Who have you been talking to?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Please, Sarah.””

“Did you go to Adrian Cole's house?””

Adrian leaned toward the phone.

“Sarah, this is Adrian.””

The line went silent.

“Mr. Cole,” Sarah whispered.

“Did you adopt my son?””

A long, broken sob came through the speaker.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Sarah finally answered.

“Yes.””

Adrian gripped the edge of the desk.

“Did you know he was mine?””

“I knew he was Camille's.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

“I knew there was a possibility.””

“A possibility?””

Sarah began crying.

“Your mother came to us. She said the baby had been abandoned. She said his mother was incapable of raising him and that the father had agreed to the arrangement.””

“I never agreed to anything.””

“I know that now.””

Adrian's voice hardened.

“How long have you known?””

“Three years.””

Evelyn stood abruptly.

“Three years? Sarah, you looked me in the eyes at Christmas. You told me Noah was the best thing that had ever happened to you.””

“He is!””

“Then how could you keep this from me?””

“Because I was afraid!””

Sarah's voice broke into a sob.

“You don't understand what it was like. We had tried for years. Every doctor told us our chances were almost nothing. Then your mother appeared with a baby and told us we could finally have a family.””

“My mother is dead,” Adrian said coldly.

“Not when this happened.””

He paced toward the window.

“What did she tell you about Camille?””

Sarah hesitated.

“She said Camille had died.””

“And what did she tell you about me?””

“That you didn't want the baby.””

Adrian stopped.

Sarah continued through her tears.

“She said you were devastated by the delivery and that you couldn't handle another child. She told us you had signed away your rights. She said taking Noah would save him from growing up in a broken home.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“She stole my son and convinced you I had abandoned him.””

“I believed her.””

“You never questioned the paperwork?””

“We were shown legal documents. There were signatures. A lawyer explained everything.””

“Which lawyer?””

“Arthur Bell.””

Adrian's expression changed.

Arthur Bell had been the family's attorney for more than twenty years. He had handled his father's estate, his mother's affairs, and the legal arrangements following Camille's supposed death.

He had retired two years earlier.

Adrian had attended his farewell dinner.

He remembered Bell raising a glass and telling him that some losses could never be repaired, only survived.

“Sarah,” he said slowly, “where is Noah right now?””

“At home.””

“Is he safe?””

“Of course he is!””

“Then keep him there. Don't move him, don't contact anyone about this, and don't let anyone tell him anything until we've spoken to an independent attorney.””

Sarah's breathing became ragged.

“Are you going to take him away from me?””

Adrian closed his eyes.

He had imagined finding Noah a thousand different ways during the last hour. In those fantasies, he stormed into a room, gathered his son into his arms, and brought him home.

But Noah was not an object stolen from a shelf.

He was a three-year-old boy who had a bedroom, a favorite blanket, and a woman he called Mom.

He had no idea that the adults around him had built his life on a lie.

“I don't know what happens next,” Adrian said honestly.

“But I won't punish him for what the adults did.””

Sarah began to cry harder.

“I love him.””

“I believe you.””

“Please don't tell him we're not his family.””

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

She was crying silently.

“Noah deserves the truth,” he said.

“But he'll get it in a way that protects him.””

He ended the call.

For a long moment, the only sound in the library was the ticking of the clock.

Then Evelyn sank into the chair.

“My sister has been raising Camille's baby.””

Adrian sat beside her.

“And neither of us knew.””

She looked at the photograph of the twins.

“Camille will want to see him.””

“Yes.””

“What if she thinks Sarah stole him?””

“She'll have every right to be angry.””

“What if she never forgives her?””

Adrian had no answer.

He picked up the notebook from the desk and began examining the remaining documents.

Near the back, he found a letter addressed to Arthur Bell.

It was dated six months after Noah's birth.

The letter had never been mailed.

He unfolded it.

Arthur,

The arrangement is no longer sustainable. Adrian has begun asking questions about the missing records. Camille remains under supervision, and the child is settled with the Brooks family. We must ensure that no one connects the two matters.

If Adrian discovers the truth, all of us will lose everything.

The letter was signed with a single initial.

*V.*

Adrian stared at it.

Victoria had known Noah's location.

She had coordinated with the attorney.

And she had been involved in Camille's confinement.

But the letter contained another detail.

A handwritten note at the bottom read:

*The original birth certificates remain with Bell. If necessary, use the emergency file.*

Adrian photographed the page and sent it to Marcus.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed Arthur Bell's name.

Adrian answered immediately.

“Arthur.””

The older man's voice sounded strained.

“Adrian, I've been told you're asking questions about the twins.””

Adrian went cold.

“Who told you?””

“That doesn't matter.””

“It matters to me.””

Bell sighed.

“Listen carefully. Whatever you found in that house, put it away. You don't understand the consequences of reopening this.””

Adrian stared at the hidden room.

“You helped my mother take my son.””

“I helped preserve your family's future.””

“You forged my signature.””

“I acted under instructions.””

“Whose instructions?””

Silence.

Then Bell said, “If you want to know what really happened to Camille, meet me at the old courthouse tomorrow morning.””

“Why not now?””

“Because there are people listening who would rather see this buried.””

Adrian's grip tightened around the phone.

“Arthur, tell me one thing. Is there another child?””

The lawyer's breathing changed.

“Yes.””

Adrian felt his heart slam against his ribs.

“Where?””

Bell whispered, “The child Victoria told everyone had died was never Noah.””

Adrian stopped breathing.

“Then who?””

Before Bell could answer, a loud crash sounded from the other end of the line.

Someone shouted.

The phone went dead.

Adrian stared at the screen.

May you like

Then a message appeared.

*Don't come alone. Your mother wasn't the one who started this.*
