Chapter 9: The Daughter Nobody Claimed

Adrian drove home without speaking.
His mother's safe-deposit key lay in the cup holder beside him. The note from Arthur Bell sat folded in his pocket, its words burning into his mind.
The woman who raised Victoria wasn't her biological mother.
His mother had raised Victoria.
Not as a niece.
Not as a family friend.
As her own daughter.
The implications were staggering.
Victoria had entered his life years before Camille disappeared. She had become his business partner, his confidante, and eventually the woman he intended to marry.
All the while, she had been connected to the one person who had helped arrange his wife's disappearance.
His mother had not simply trusted Victoria.
She had been protecting her.
When Adrian reached the estate, Marcus was waiting in the foyer.
“The police have secured the documents from the hidden room,” he said.
“They've also requested an interview with Victoria.””
“Have they found her?””
“Not yet. Her phone is switched off, and she hasn't returned to her apartment.””
Adrian looked toward the staircase.
“Has Nathan eaten?””
“Yes, sir. He had dinner with the nanny. He asked when Evelyn would be back.””
Adrian's expression softened.
“Tell him she may visit tomorrow.””
Marcus hesitated.
“Sir, there's another issue. Someone attempted to access the estate's security system remotely this afternoon.””
“Who?””
“We're tracing the connection, but the attempt came through a device registered to Victoria's office.””
Adrian felt his jaw tighten.
“She knows we've found the room.””
“Yes.””
“Then assume she knows we've found the documents, too.””
Marcus nodded.
Adrian walked into his office and closed the door.
He placed the key on the desk beside a photograph of his mother.
Eleanor Cole had been a formidable woman. She had built her late husband's company into a national business, negotiated contracts with people twice her age, and made every room she entered feel as though she owned it.
She had also made Adrian promise never to embarrass the family.
He had kept that promise long after her death.
He had hidden his grief. He had refused to discuss Camille's medical records. He had accepted the explanation that his wife was gone because the alternative was too painful to consider.
Now he wondered whether his mother's greatest gift had been teaching him how to obey.
At 8:30 p.m., Marcus returned with a message.
“Arthur Bell is on his way.””
Adrian looked up.
“He's coming here?””
“He says he doesn't trust the courthouse anymore.””
“Why?””
Marcus handed him a printed email.
It had been sent to Arthur's office three days earlier.
*We know what you kept. If Adrian learns about the third child, the arrangement is over.*
There was no signature.
But the attached photograph showed Arthur's house from across the street.
Adrian read the message twice.
“Get security to check the perimeter.””
“Already done.””
“And bring Arthur straight here when he arrives.””
Marcus left.
Twenty minutes later, a black sedan pulled into the driveway.
Arthur Bell stepped out, leaning heavily on a cane. His hair had thinned, and his shoulders were narrower than Adrian remembered. But his eyes remained sharp.
He entered the office and sat without waiting for an invitation.
“You look like your father,” Arthur said.
Adrian remained standing.
“And you look like a man who has spent three years hiding a crime.””
Arthur lowered his gaze.
“I deserve that.””
“You deserve much worse.””
“Yes.””
The lawyer's quiet agreement unsettled Adrian more than a denial would have.
Adrian placed the key on the desk.
“Tell me about Victoria.””
Arthur stared at it.
“Eleanor had a daughter before she married your father.””
Adrian frowned.
“My mother never mentioned a previous marriage.””
“She wasn't married. She was nineteen. The father was a man named Thomas Hale, a traveling salesman who left before the child was born.””
“Victoria?””
Arthur nodded.
“Eleanor gave birth in a small private hospital. Her family was wealthy, religious, and obsessed with appearances. An unmarried daughter with a child would have caused a scandal.””
“So she gave the baby away?””
“Not exactly. Eleanor's older sister, Margaret, agreed to raise the child as her own. Victoria grew up believing Margaret was her mother.””
Adrian sat slowly.
“Did Victoria know the truth?””
“She discovered it as a teenager. Eleanor told her when she was sixteen.””
“Why?””
“Because Eleanor wanted her close. She paid for Victoria's education, arranged internships, and made sure she had access to the family's business contacts.””
Adrian stared at him.
“She groomed her to become part of the company.””
“Eleanor believed Victoria was capable of protecting the Cole family. She was ambitious, intelligent, and willing to do things other people wouldn't.””
“Like steal from a charity.””
Arthur's expression tightened.
“Yes.””
“Like forge my signature.””
“Yes.””
“Like make my wife disappear.””
Arthur closed his eyes.
“I never intended for Camille to be harmed.””
Adrian slammed his hand against the desk.
“Stop saying that! You signed the paperwork. You helped move my wife into a facility under a false name. You helped take my son.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me where the third child is.””
Arthur looked up.
“I don't know.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Of course you don't.””
“Adrian, listen. I discovered the altered birth record only after Eleanor's death. I tried to trace the child, but the trail led to an adoption agency that had closed. The original file was sealed under a court order.””
“Who requested the order?””
“Eleanor.””
Adrian's fingers curled.
“Why would she hide her own grandchild?””
Arthur hesitated.
“Because the child was not simply another baby.””
“What does that mean?””
“The third child was born with a distinctive birthmark. A dark crescent beneath the left shoulder.””
Adrian stared at him.
“So?””
Arthur leaned forward.
“Eleanor believed the child was connected to a secret that could destroy the family.””
“What secret?””
Arthur reached into his briefcase and removed a thick envelope.
Inside were bank statements, hospital records, and a photograph of three newborn babies.
Adrian recognized Camille's handwriting on the back.
*Nathan. Noah. Grace.*
Grace.
His daughter had a name.
Arthur continued.
“The night Camille gave birth, Dr. Warren discovered that the hospital's records had been altered before the delivery. Someone had changed the blood-type information on the mother's chart.””
Adrian frowned.
“Why would that matter?””
“Because the original records showed that Camille's blood type was incompatible with the information recorded on the supposed father's medical file.””
Adrian stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
“Someone had altered the records to conceal a paternity discrepancy.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“Are you saying one of the children isn't mine?””
Arthur shook his head.
“No. I'm saying Eleanor believed one of the babies might not be yours.””
Adrian's face hardened.
“Did she have proof?””
“No.””
“Then why did she separate my children?””
“Because she was convinced Camille had been unfaithful.””
Adrian stood.
“Camille was faithful to me.””
“I believe you.””
“Then why did you help my mother?””
Arthur's shoulders sagged.
“Because Eleanor showed me a letter she claimed came from Camille. The letter suggested she had been involved with another man before your marriage.””
“Did you verify it?””
“No.””
Adrian stared at him in disgust.
“You destroyed my family because you believed a letter you never verified.””
Arthur bowed his head.
“Yes.””
For a moment, Adrian could barely see through his anger.
Then he noticed something on the back of the photograph.
A small handwritten note had been added in a different ink.
*The crescent belongs to the child who carries the truth.*
Adrian looked up.
“Who wrote this?””
Arthur shook his head.
“I don't know.””
“Who has the original birth certificates?””
“Eleanor's safe-deposit box.””
Adrian picked up the key.
“Then we're going.””
Arthur rose carefully.
“There's one more thing you should know.””
Adrian stopped.
“What?””
“Victoria knows about the safe-deposit box. She has been trying to access it since Eleanor died.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Victoria?””
Arthur's expression grew bleak.
“Of the person she was protecting.””
Adrian stared at him.
“Who?””
Arthur opened his mouth.
Before he could answer, the office lights went out.
A heavy crash sounded from the hallway.
Marcus shouted from somewhere near the front entrance.
Then came the sharp sound of breaking glass.
Adrian grabbed Arthur's arm and pulled him behind the desk.
“Stay down.””
A shadow moved across the office doorway.
Someone stepped inside.
A woman.
Her face was obscured by the darkness, but Adrian recognized the shape of her shoulders and the way she held her head.
“Victoria?””
The figure did not answer.
Instead, she placed a small object on the desk.
A silver baby bracelet.
Adrian stared at it.
The name engraved across the metal was *GRACE*.
He looked up.
“Where did you get this?””
The woman stepped into the emergency light spilling from the corridor.
It wasn't Victoria.
It was Sarah Brooks.
Evelyn's sister.
Her face was wet with tears, and her hands trembled as she held a second envelope.
“I'm sorry,” she whispered.
Adrian rose slowly.
“Sarah, what are you doing here?””
She looked at the bracelet.
“Because I know where Grace is.””
Arthur made a strangled sound.
Adrian stared at her.
“Where?””
Sarah's lips trembled.
“She's alive. She's been alive for three years.””
“Then tell me where she is.””
Sarah shook her head.
“I can't.””
Adrian stepped toward her.
“Why not?””
“Because the person who has been raising her is the same person who paid my husband to take Noah.””
Adrian went cold.
“Who?””
Sarah looked at him with terrified eyes.
Then she whispered a name that Adrian had not heard in years.
A name belonging to someone who had been at his wedding, held Nathan as a newborn, and stood beside his family at Camille's funeral.
*His father-in-law.*
Camille's father.
A man everyone believed had died before Nathan was born.
Sarah opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph of a little girl standing beside a man with silver hair.
The girl wore a yellow dress.
Beneath her left shoulder, visible where the dress slipped slightly, was a dark crescent-shaped birthmark.
Adrian stared at the photograph.
Then he looked at Sarah.
“Where is Camille's father?””
Sarah swallowed.
“Living under another name.””
She handed him a slip of paper.
An address.
And a warning written in red ink.
*Do not tell Camille until you know why he took her daughter.*
Adrian looked toward the staircase, where Nathan was sleeping.
Then he looked at the photograph of Grace.
His family had been divided by lies for three years.
Now he had finally found the person who might hold the last piece of the truth.
But before he could move, his phone rang.
It was Evelyn.
Her voice was shaking.
“Adrian, you need to come to Willow Creek immediately.””
“What happened?””
“Camille is gone.””
Adrian felt his blood turn to ice.
“What do you mean, gone?””
“The room is empty. Her bed is made. The window is open.””
“Did anyone see her leave?””
Evelyn began to cry.
“There was a note on the pillow.””
“What does it say?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Tell Adrian that if he wants his daughter back, he must stop looking for me.””
Adrian stared at the photograph of Grace.
Then he looked at the address Sarah had given him.

For the first time, he understood that finding his daughter and finding his wife might require him to choose between two impossible truths.
And he had only one night to decide which trail to follow.
