Chapter 7: The Transfer to Her Ex-Husband

“I swear to you, Michael. I didn't make this transfer.””

Vanessa stood beside the coffee table, gripping her phone so tightly that her knuckles had turned pale.

I looked at the screen again.

Two thousand four hundred dollars.

A pending transfer to Andre, the father of her three children.

The reference note read: *CHILDREN'S FUTURE — FIRST PAYMENT.*

I had never seen those words attached to any of our household transactions.

“What does ‘first payment’ mean?”” I asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Then why is Andre's account saved in your banking app?””

“Because I've sent him money before.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“School expenses. Medical bills. Things for the children.””

“Out of our household account?””

“Not always.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Vanessa, I'm trying to understand. If you've been helping Andre financially, why didn't you tell me?””

“Because it wasn't your responsibility.””

I stared at her.

“You're right that his personal finances aren't automatically my responsibility. But if you're using money from our household account to pay him, it becomes our financial concern.””

She opened her mouth to respond, but the phone vibrated in her hand.

A message appeared from the bank.

The pending transfer required additional verification before it could be completed.

I pointed to the screen.

“Can you cancel it?””

Vanessa pressed the notification, navigated through the details, and tapped the cancellation option.

A confirmation appeared.

*TRANSFER CANCELLATION REQUEST RECEIVED.*

She exhaled sharply.

“It's canceled.””

“Good.””

I wasn't ready to celebrate. The money had not left the account, but the attempted transfer raised another question.

Someone had initiated it.

And the reference note suggested that the payment was part of a plan.

I sat on the sofa and motioned for Vanessa to join me.

“Let's go through this carefully,” I said.

“When did you last speak to Andre?””

She remained standing.

“Yesterday.””

“About what?””

“The children.””

“What about them?””

“He wanted to know whether I was still planning to take them away for a few days.””

I glanced at her.

“Did you tell him about the resort?””

“No. I told him I was thinking about a trip.””

“Did he know you were booking one?””

She hesitated.

“I don't remember exactly what I said.””

I shook my head.

“Vanessa, I need straight answers.””

She finally sat down.

“He asked whether I had enough money to do it. I told him I was working on it.””

“And what did he say?””

“He offered to help.””

I stared at her.

“Help you pay for a trip with his children?””

“Yes.””

“Why would he need to send you money if you were the one paying for it?””

“Because he wanted to contribute.””

“Then why was this transfer going from our account to his?””

Vanessa looked down at her phone.

“I don't know.””

I believed she was frightened. But fear didn't explain everything, and I wasn't going to accept uncertainty as the final answer.

“Call him,” I said.

Her head snapped up.

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because I don't want him involved in our marriage.””

“His account is attached to a transfer from our household account. He's already involved in our finances, whether you intended it or not.””

She stood again.

“This is humiliating.””

“What's humiliating is discovering that thousands of dollars have been moved around without my knowledge.””

She paced toward the window, then turned back.

“Fine. I'll call him. But you need to promise me you won't threaten him or start an argument.””

“I won't threaten anyone. I want an explanation.””

Vanessa scrolled through her contacts.

She hesitated over Andre's name before pressing the call button.

He answered on the third ring.

“Hey, Vanessa. Everything okay?””

Her eyes moved toward me.

“Andre, I need to ask you something about a bank transfer.””

There was a pause.

“What transfer?””

“The $2,400 payment.””

Another pause.

Then Andre said, “You weren't supposed to send that today.””

Vanessa went completely still.

I leaned forward.

“What did he say?”” I asked.

She covered the microphone.

“He said I wasn't supposed to send it today.””

I held out my hand.

“Put him on speaker.””

She shook her head.

“Michael—”

“Speaker, Vanessa.””

After a moment, she tapped the screen.

Andre's voice filled the room.

“Vanessa, why are you calling me about this? We already talked about the arrangement.””

“What arrangement?”” I asked.

Silence.

Then Andre said, “Who's that?””

“Michael,” I answered.

“Her husband.””

A short, uncomfortable pause followed.

“Oh,” Andre said.

“I didn't realize you were there.””

“Now you know. What arrangement are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked at me, pleading silently for me to calm down.

I kept my voice steady.

Andre cleared his throat.

“It's a private matter between me and Vanessa.””

“Not when it involves money from our household account.””

“Michael, I don't know anything about your household account.””

“Your name is attached to a pending $2,400 transfer.””

He went quiet.

Then he said, “That money was supposed to go toward the children.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“Which children?””

“Our children,” Andre replied.

“The three I have with Vanessa.””

The words settled over the room.

I looked at my wife.

She was staring at the floor.

I asked, “What exactly was the money for?””

Andre sighed.

“Vanessa told me she was putting money aside so the kids would have somewhere stable to stay if things changed.””

“If what changed?””

He didn't answer.

I leaned forward.

“If what changed, Andre?””

Vanessa suddenly reached for the phone.

“That's enough,” she said.

“You don't need to explain anything else.””

But Andre had already started speaking.

“She said she was making plans in case you two separated.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

She had gone pale.

“Is that true?”” I asked.

She didn't answer.

I stood slowly.

“Vanessa?””

She pressed her lips together.

Andre spoke again.

“Look, I don't want to get caught in the middle of this. I was only trying to make sure my kids were taken care of.””

I looked at the phone.

“Did you ask Vanessa to send you money?””

“No. She offered to put something aside for them.””

“From what account?””

“I don't know, Michael. She said she'd handle it.””

I closed my eyes briefly.

There it was.

Vanessa had been preparing for a possible separation, moving money into accounts I didn't recognize, paying a lawyer, and arranging financial support for her children through their biological father.

Meanwhile, my daughter had been left without a pair of shoes.

I looked at Vanessa.

“How long have you been planning this?””

She whispered, “Not long.””

“Give me a date.””

“I started thinking about it a few months ago.””

I stared at her.

“A few months?””

Andre interrupted.

“Vanessa, you told me this was something you both understood.””

She turned toward the phone.

“I never said Michael knew!””

“Then why did you tell me the money was already being set aside?””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“Stop talking, Andre.””

But I had heard enough to know this wasn't a single impulsive transfer.

It was a plan.

A plan Vanessa had been working on while I believed we were building a stable family together.

I took a slow breath.

“Andre, I appreciate that you want to protect your children. I'm not asking you to stop being their father. But I need you to understand that you cannot accept money from an account that doesn't belong to you without knowing where it's coming from.””

“I didn't know she was using your money.””

“Then we agree on that much.””

Andre went quiet.

I continued.

“The transfer has been canceled. If Vanessa wants to contribute to her children's future, she needs to do that with money she has the right to use.””

“I understand,” he said.

I nodded, although he couldn't see me.

“Good.””

Vanessa ended the call.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she turned toward me.

“You didn't have to embarrass me like that.””

I stared at her.

“Embarrass you?””

“You made me look like a liar in front of Andre.””

I felt something inside me harden.

“Were you telling the truth?””

She looked away.

“I was trying to protect my children.””

“By hiding money from me?””

“By preparing for a possibility I was afraid of!””

“And what about my daughter?””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“Don't bring her into this.””

“She has been in this from the beginning. You took money from her savings. You excluded her from the shopping trip. You used our household funds for a plan that didn't include her.””

“I was never planning to hurt her!””

“You didn't have to plan it. You just had to decide her needs mattered less.””

Vanessa recoiled.

For a moment, I thought she might slap me.

Instead, she walked to the coffee table and picked up the receipt I'd left there.

“You know what?”” she said.

“Maybe this is exactly why I needed a plan. Because no matter what I do, I'm always the one who gets blamed.””

I watched her.

“Then tell me what you believe you did right.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I didn't press her.

I was tired of trying to force honesty out of someone who kept treating it like an attack.

I picked up my phone and opened the household account again.

“I'm going to contact the bank tomorrow,” I said.

“I'll make sure no more transfers can be made from the accounts I'm responsible for without my authorization.””

Her head snapped up.

“You can't lock me out of our money!””

“I'm protecting the funds I worked for, including my daughter's savings.””

“What about my children?””

“I will continue paying the legitimate household expenses we agreed on. Their needs aren't going to disappear because we're having a serious problem.””

She looked at me with disbelief.

“Then why are you doing this?””

“Because the money has to be accounted for. Because trust has been broken. And because I can't keep pretending that nothing is wrong.””

Vanessa sat down heavily.

Her phone vibrated again.

She glanced at the screen, and her expression changed.

“What's wrong?”” I asked.

She hesitated.

Then she turned the phone toward me.

The message was from Andre.

*Did you tell Michael about the second account?*

I read it twice.

Then I looked at her.

“Second account?””

Vanessa snatched the phone back.

“It's nothing.””

I stood perfectly still.

“Vanessa, what second account?””

She pressed the phone against her chest.

“Michael, please.””

I felt the familiar pressure returning to my chest.

“Is there another account with money from our household?””

She didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

I walked toward the window and looked out at the quiet street.

When I turned back, Vanessa was crying.

“There's something else,” she whispered.

I waited.

She wiped her face and finally met my eyes.

“The second account isn't in my name.””

My stomach tightened.

“Whose name is it under?””

She swallowed.

May you like

Then she said the name of the person I least expected.

“My daughter's.””
