Chapter 5: The Friend Who Knew Too Much
“Chloe?””
Her name came out as a whisper.
She stood near the entrance, frozen.
Everyone looked at her.
My best friend since college.
The person who helped choose my wedding dress.
The person who spent months listening to me talk about my perfect day.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Not again.
Not another apology.
Not another person standing in front of me admitting they had destroyed something.
“Why?””
My voice cracked.
“Why would you do this?””
Chloe looked at my father.
Then at Linda.
Then at Evelyn.
“I didn’t know how else to make the truth come out.””
I stared.
“So you ruined my wedding?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I saved you from walking into a marriage while your entire family was built on lies.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Careful.””
Chloe looked at him.
“I’m not talking about you.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
And suddenly, I hated that everyone seemed to know more about my life than I did.
Chloe walked closer.
“Emma, there’s something you need to know.””
My father immediately said:
“Don’t listen to her.””
Chloe laughed bitterly.
“That’s exactly what you said twenty-six years ago.””
I froze.
“What?””
My father looked terrified.
Chloe reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old photograph.
Not the same one Evelyn had.
Another one.
In it, my mother was holding me.
And standing beside her was a young woman.
A woman I recognized.
My stomach dropped.
Because I had seen that face my entire life.
In old family pictures.
At holidays.
At my birthday parties.
“Who is that?””
Chloe looked at me.
“Your aunt Rachel.””
I turned.
Rachel went silent.
“What?””
Chloe swallowed.
“She wasn’t just the person who helped your mother find you.””
My eyes moved between them.
“Then what was she?””
Rachel looked devastated.
Chloe answered.
“She was there the night your mother disappeared.””
The room erupted.
“Stop,” my father shouted.
But Chloe continued.
“She knows exactly what happened.””
I looked at Rachel.
My aunt.
The woman who said she was helping me.
The woman who brought the letters.
“Rachel?””
She looked at the floor.
“Emma…”
My heart shattered again.
“How many people lied to me?””
Nobody answered.
Chloe stepped closer.
“I found the truth because my mother left me something before she died.””
“What?””
“A journal.””
She opened her phone.
“I found entries about your family.””
My father’s face turned pale.
“Your mother wrote that she was afraid.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“Afraid of who?””
Chloe looked at my father.
Then at Rachel.
Then at Linda.
“Not one person.””
My breathing slowed.
“Then who?””
Chloe whispered:
“All of them.””
The words felt impossible.
My father shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
Rachel started crying.
“Robert…”
He turned toward her.
“Tell her.””
Rachel looked at me.
And I knew before she spoke.
I knew there was another secret.
“There was a night twenty-six years ago,” Rachel said.
“A night when your mother tried to take you and leave.””
My heart pounded.
“Why?””
Rachel’s voice broke.
“Because she found out what your father and Linda had done.””
The room went silent.
“What did they do?””
Rachel closed her eyes.
And then she said:
“They planned to make sure Evelyn never saw you again.””
I stepped backward.
“No.””
My father whispered my name.
But I didn’t look at him.
Because suddenly, every memory I had was changing.
Every photograph.
Every story.
Every person I loved.
Rachel reached for me.
“Emma, there is one thing you don’t know.””
I stared.
“What?””
She looked toward the old photograph Chloe was holding.
Then toward Evelyn.
Then toward my father.
“The woman you were told died twenty-six years ago…”
She paused.
“She was supposed to die that night.””
My blood turned cold.
“Supposed to?””
Rachel nodded.
“Because someone tried to kill her.””
And then Evelyn looked at my father.
May you like
And whispered the words that ended the wedding completely.
“Robert was there.””
