Chapter 8: The Memory I Buried

The message stayed on Daniel’s phone screen.

Five words.

*Don’t trust your wife.*

I stared at it.

Then I stared at Daniel.

Because for the second time that night, I watched the person I loved look at me like I was someone he didn’t know.

Not with anger.

Not even with hatred.

With doubt.

And somehow, that hurt more.

“Daniel…”

He didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed on the screen.

I could see the battle happening inside him.

The husband who wanted to believe me.

The brother who had just heard a voice from the dead.

The man who had spent years searching for answers.

All of them were fighting at once.

My mother stepped forward.

“Don’t do this.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Do what?””

“Believe everything they tell you.””

He held up the phone.

“My brother sent this.””

My mother shook her head.

“We don’t know if that’s really him.””

Daniel looked toward the door.

“The person outside knew things only Noah would know.””

Silence.

Because that was true.

Nobody had an answer.

Not even me.

I looked at Evan.

He was staring at the floor.

“Say something.””

He looked up.

“About what?””

“About Noah.””

His expression changed.

“I never knew Noah.””

“But you knew about my family.””

“Only what they gave me.””

“Who is they?””

His jaw tightened.

“I told you. I don’t know.””

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me something you do know.””

Evan hesitated.

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“I saved everything.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I knew eventually something would happen.””

“That’s convenient.””

Evan nodded.

“I know how it sounds.””

“Because it sounds like another lie.””

He accepted that.

“I deserve that.””

He unlocked his phone.

“There were messages.””

He handed it to Daniel.

“Dates. Instructions. Everything.””

Daniel looked through them.

His expression became darker with every second.

“What?””

I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he handed me the phone.

The first message was from four months ago.

*Find out what she knows about the key.*

The second:

*Do not let her remember the night of the accident.*

My hands became cold.

The third:

*If she remembers, everything ends.*

I looked up.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody spoke.

Then my mother whispered:

“It means they were right.””

I turned toward her.

“About what?””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“You don’t remember.””

I felt a strange pressure in my head.

A feeling I couldn’t explain.

“I remember the accident.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

But even as I said it, I realized something.

I didn’t.

Not completely.

I remembered the phone call.

I remembered Noah’s voice.

I remembered him asking me something.

But after that…

Nothing.

Just darkness.

A missing piece.

“What happened after I talked to him?”” I asked.

My mother looked away.

“Mom.””

She didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

She sat down slowly.

“When Noah called you, he wasn’t calling for help.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

My mother looked at him.

“He was warning her.””

My heart started beating faster.

“About what?””

“He knew your fathers were fighting.””

I shook my head.

“My father was dead.””

“Before that.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

My mother’s voice became quiet.

“Your father discovered what Daniel’s father had done.””

Daniel froze.

“What did he do?””

My mother looked down.

“He took the money.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You said they were partners.””

“They were.””

“Then why?””

“Because your father wanted out.””

The room became silent.

My mother continued.

“Your father found out how dangerous the people around them were. He tried to leave. He tried to take the records with him.””

“The records in the box.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“And Noah?””

My mother looked at me.

“Noah helped him.””

Daniel stepped back.

“What?””

“He found out the truth.””

My mother’s voice cracked.

“Your brother was going to expose everyone.””

Daniel looked at his phone.

At the message.

At the name Noah.

“But you said Noah caused the accident.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“I said he caused it.””

She looked up.

“I never said he meant to.””

The words confused me.

“What does that mean?””

She took a deep breath.

“Your father was driving that night.””

Daniel went still.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“It’s the truth.””

My mother looked at me.

“You were in the car.””

My entire body froze.

The room tilted.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“I wasn’t.””

“You were.””

My breathing became uneven.

“I would remember.””

My mother’s face broke.

“You were eight years old.””

A memory flashed.

Rain.

A road.

A loud crash.

Someone screaming.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“No.””

Daniel immediately stepped toward me.

“What are you remembering?””

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

“I don’t know.””

But I did.

Pieces.

Not the whole thing.

Pieces.

A hand holding mine.

A voice telling me not to look.

A man saying:

“Take the key.””

My eyes widened.

“The key.””

Everyone looked at me.

“What?””

I looked at my mother.

“My father gave me the key.””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Before the crash.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because he knew he wouldn’t survive.””

Silence.

Daniel looked devastated.

“Then why hide this from her?””

My mother whispered:

“Because after the crash, she forgot.””

I stared.

“What?””

“You blocked it out.””

“No.””

“You did.””

My heart raced.

The memories were coming faster now.

A car.

Rain hitting glass.

My father’s voice.

Noah shouting.

A second vehicle behind us.

A flash of headlights.

Someone following.

I stepped back.

“There was another car.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

“There was another car.””

My voice shook.

“My father wasn’t alone.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“You remember.””

I closed my eyes.

The night returned.

Not completely.

But enough.

Noah was driving.

No.

My father was driving.

Noah was beside him.

They were arguing.

Someone was following them.

Then the crash.

Then Noah opening the door.

Then Noah putting something around my neck.

The key.

And then…

Someone else.

A man outside the car.

A voice.

A familiar voice.

I opened my eyes.

“I know who was there.””

Everyone stared.

“Who?””

I looked at Daniel.

My lips trembled.

“I don’t know his name.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“But?””

I swallowed.

“I know his face.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Nobody had touched it.

Nobody had unlocked it.

It simply opened.

And standing there was a man I had never seen before.

Older.

Gray hair.

A scar across his cheek.

He looked directly at me.

Then at Daniel.

And smiled.

“You finally remembered.””

Daniel moved in front of me.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at him.

“You really don’t know?””

His smile faded.

“Your father killed my family.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?””

The man stepped inside.

“And your wife was the last person to see the truth.””

I felt my blood run cold.

“Who are you?””

He looked at me.

“My name is Victor.””

A pause.

Then:

“And I’m the reason Noah has been hiding for twenty years.””

Daniel stared.

“Where is my brother?””

Victor smiled.

“He’s closer than you think.””

The lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

And in the darkness, a voice whispered from behind us.

A voice I knew.

“No.””

The lights came back.

Everyone turned.

Standing in the doorway was Noah.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably Noah.

He looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

And said:

“I’m sorry.””

A pause.

May you like

Then he looked directly at me.

“Because I’m the one who made you forget.””
