Chapter 9: The Woman Who Stayed
The message remained on my phone.
Four words.
I never left, Vivian.
I stared at them until my eyes burned.
Because there was something worse than discovering someone had lied to you.
It was discovering someone had been telling the truth.
Evelyn had never left.
For twelve years, while I built a new life, while I believed my past was gone, while I convinced myself I knew who I was…
she had been somewhere.
Watching.
Waiting.
“Who is she?””
My voice barely worked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
Neither did Adrian.
That frightened me more than anything.
Because everyone had been willing to tell me pieces of the truth.
But Evelyn’s name silenced them.
“Who is Evelyn?””
Clara looked at the floor.
“She was your father’s sister.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t remember having an aunt.””
“You wouldn’t.””
“Why?””
Clara looked at me sadly.
“Because she was the last memory removed.””
My stomach dropped.
“The last?””
She nodded.
“The procedure didn’t just remove your memories of the accident.””
I looked at her.
“It removed the people connected to it.””
My fingers tightened around my phone.
“Why would my aunt be removed?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Because she was the one person who knew everything.””
The room went silent.
“Everything about what?””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Adrian.
“Tell me.””
He hesitated.
And that hesitation made anger rise inside me.
“No more protecting me.””
“Vivian—”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I spent twelve years living inside a lie because everyone decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
My voice cracked.
“I lost my mother. I lost my father. I lost my brother.””
I looked around the room.
“And then I lost myself.””
Nobody moved.
“I want the truth.””
Adrian looked at me for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
“Evelyn was the person who helped Daniel create the procedure.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
“She understood the technology.””
“She worked with him?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked away.
“But she didn’t know what he planned to do with it.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
My voice became bitter.
“I didn’t know. I was trying to help. I was protecting you.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You all have excuses.””
Nobody argued.
Because I was right.
Adrian stepped closer.
“But Evelyn changed.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
“After Noah died.””
The name hurt.
Every time I heard it, something inside me cracked.
“She blamed herself.””
“For what?””
“For believing Daniel could be controlled.””
I looked at the message again.
“She’s been watching me for twelve years?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“Because she was waiting for you to remember.””
A chill moved through me.
“Why now?””
Daniel answered.
“Because you found the recording.””
I looked at the laptop.
The dead screen.
The hidden truth.
“She knew I would find it?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
Then I understood.
“She put it there.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at the USB drive.
“She wanted me to find everything.””
Clara nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew the truth would eventually come out.””
I laughed quietly.
“Then why hide for twelve years?””
Clara looked at me.
“Because Evelyn wasn’t hiding from you.””
A pause.
“She was hiding from Daniel.””
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
“You’re afraid of her.””
He didn’t answer.
“You are.””
Daniel looked away.
For the first time, I saw the man who had controlled my entire life lose control.
“What did she do?””
Daniel was silent.
Then he said:
“She knows what really happened that night.””
My heart pounded.
“What really happened?””
Adrian moved toward the laptop.
“There’s one more file.””
I looked at him.
“One more?””
He nodded.
“The final recording.””
The one my mother mentioned.
The one she warned me about.
“Why didn’t we see it?””
Adrian looked at the USB drive.
“Because it was encrypted.””
“Can you open it?””
“I think so.””
He connected the drive again.
A password screen appeared.
Everyone stared.
“Do you know it?””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel suddenly looked nervous.
“Don’t.””
I turned toward him.
“Why?””
“Because you don’t know what’s on there.””
I almost smiled.
“That’s your argument?””
The screen blinked.
Password required.
I stared at it.
Something strange happened.
My fingers moved before I thought.
I typed.
June.
No.
Wrong.
I tried again.
Noah.
Wrong.
My chest tightened.
Then another memory came.
A child’s voice.
“Only you would know.””
A little boy laughing.
“Promise?””
My hand moved.
I typed:
Sunflowers.
The screen unlocked.
Everyone froze.
“How did you know that?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
The file opened.
A video.
Recorded twelve years ago.
My mother appeared.
But this time, she wasn’t alone.
Evelyn stood beside her.
Younger.
Tired.
Afraid.
My mother looked into the camera.
“Vivian, if you’re watching this, then Evelyn failed to keep you away from the truth.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at the screen.
Evelyn spoke.
“She will hate us.””
My mother looked at her.
“She has the right.””
The recording continued.
“We need to explain what happened.””
My mother took a breath.
“The night your father died was not an accident.””
I already knew that.
But hearing it again felt different.
“You did not kill him.””
I closed my eyes.
A wave of relief.
Then fear.
“But you believe you did because Daniel made sure you believed it.””
Daniel went completely still.
The video continued.
“He used your guilt.””
Evelyn looked away.
“He used your love for your family.””
My mother’s voice became softer.
“He knew you would sacrifice yourself to protect everyone.””
My hands shook.
“What did Daniel do?””
The video answered.
“He changed the memory procedure.””
A pause.
“He didn’t erase your memories.””
My heart stopped.
“He replaced them.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Adrian.
He looked shocked too.
“He created a false memory.””
My mother continued.
“He made you believe you were responsible for your father’s death.””
Daniel whispered:
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
The video continued.
“And he made you believe Adrian was responsible for everything.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
The pain on his face was unbearable.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“Adrian tried to stop him.””
A pause.
“He failed because Daniel had already prepared.””
I looked at Adrian.
“You knew?””
He nodded slowly.
“I suspected.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because the procedure was unstable.””
“What does that mean?””
He looked at the screen.
“It means remembering too quickly could have killed you.””
The room went silent.
My mother continued.
“The final piece of your memory was hidden because Daniel was looking for it.””
“What piece?””
The video showed Evelyn placing a small box on the table.
My breath stopped.
I recognized it.
Not because I remembered.
Because my body did.
“That box contains the original recording from the night Noah died.””
My chest tightened.
“Noah…”
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“The truth about Noah is what Daniel never wanted you to remember.””
The video glitched.
Then my mother spoke again.
“Vivian, listen carefully.””
The image shook.
“If Evelyn contacts you, trust her.””
I looked at the message on my phone.
“She is the only person who knows what happened after the shooting.””
The screen flickered.
Then my mother said:
“Because she was the one who took the gun from your hand.””
Everyone froze.
I looked at Daniel.
Then Adrian.
Then Clara.
Nobody moved.
The video continued.
“And she was the one who saw who really pulled the trigger.””
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
My mind raced.
Evelyn wasn’t the person who killed my father.
She wasn’t the person who erased my memories.
She was the person who knew.
The person who had watched everything.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone stared.
I answered.
No one spoke for three seconds.
Then a woman’s voice whispered:
“Vivian.””
My entire body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
Not from the video.
Not from photographs.
From somewhere deeper.
Somewhere buried.
“Evelyn?””
A soft laugh came through the phone.
“You finally remember my name.””
I couldn’t speak.
She continued:
“I’ve waited twelve years for this moment.””
My grip tightened.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“Look outside.””
I walked toward the window.
Slowly.
Terrified.
I pulled back the curtain.
And there she was.
Standing across the street.
An older woman.
Watching the apartment.
Watching me.
Then Evelyn lifted her hand.
And held up something.
A photograph.
The same photograph Adrian had shown me.
But this one was different.
Because on the back, written in fresh ink, were five words.
Words that made my blood run cold.
Ask Adrian who he killed.
I turned around.
Adrian was gone.
The front door was open.
And on the floor beside it was the notebook.
Opened to a page I had never seen before.
May you like
A page that contained only one sentence.
If I disappear again, it means Adrian found out I remembered the truth.
