Chapter 5: The Truth Behind The Perfect Family
The room was silent except for the sound of the old recording playing.
My father stared at the screen.
I stared at him.
Because the person in the video was him.
Not the father sitting beside me now.
A younger version.
Twelve years ago.
Standing beside my mother.
Talking.
Arguing.
Then leaving before the crash.
My heart shattered.
“Dad?””
He didn’t respond.
“Dad, what am I watching?””
He covered his face.
“I was there.””
The words were barely audible.
I stepped back.
“You said you weren’t.””
“I wasn’t supposed to be.””
“What does that mean?””
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“Your mother called me that night.””
I waited.
“She told me she had proof Claire was stealing from the company.””
My hands shook.
“And?””
“I went to meet her.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
I stared.
“Ashamed of what?””
He looked at the floor.
“I didn’t believe her.””
The confession hurt.
Not because he was guilty.
Because he had failed her.
And he knew it.
“I thought your mother was angry. I thought she was trying to destroy my marriage.””
My voice cracked.
“So you left.””
He nodded.
“I left.””
“And then she died.””
“Yes.””
I turned away.
For years, I had imagined my mother’s final moments.
I had imagined her alone.
But now I knew she had been fighting.
Trying to protect us.
My father reached for me.
“I never knew Claire followed her.””
I looked back.
“What?””
“She must have followed her after I left.””
The office door opened.
Vanessa stood there.
And behind her was Claire.
Everyone froze.
Claire smiled.
“You people really love digging through the past.””
My father stood.
“You knew.””
Claire didn’t answer.
“You knew she was investigating you.””
Claire tilted her head.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“You’re admitting it?””
She laughed softly.
“After twelve years? What does it matter?””
My father’s face hardened.
“It matters.””
Claire looked at me.
“Your mother was always dramatic.””
I stepped forward.
“You killed her.””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“I didn’t mean for her to die.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
My father looked like the world had collapsed.
Claire continued.
“She found the documents. She threatened to expose me.””
“What did you do?”” my father whispered.
“I followed her.””
The confession hung in the air.
“She lost control of the car.””
My father looked sick.
“You chased her.””
Claire shrugged.
“I wanted the files.””
Vanessa started crying.
“Mom…”
Claire turned toward her.
“Don’t act innocent. You benefited from everything.””
Vanessa froze.
And I realized.
The ring.
The gala.
The accusations.
It was all part of the same plan.
Claire wanted me gone.
She wanted my father to distrust me.
She wanted the family broken.
But she made one mistake.
She underestimated how much my mother had left behind.
My father reached into his desk drawer.
And pulled out a small recording device.
Claire’s face changed.
“What is that?””
My father looked at her.
“Insurance.””
She stepped back.
“You recorded me?””
“No.””
He pressed a button.
“Mrs. Ellis did.””
Claire went pale.
The housekeeper stepped into the doorway.
Calm.
Quiet.
Holding another folder.
“I have copies of every document your mother hid, Miss Emma.””
My father looked at Claire.
“Your game ended the moment you touched my daughter.””
Claire’s confidence disappeared.
But before anyone could call the police, her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
And suddenly smiled.
A cold smile.
“You think you know everything.””
Nobody moved.
She answered.
“Tell them.””
My father frowned.
“Who is that?””
Claire looked directly at me.
Then said:
“The person who can prove Emma’s mother was never the only one keeping secrets.””
The call continued.
And the voice on the other end said my name.
A voice I recognized.
A voice from my past.
A voice I thought I would never hear again.
“Emma…”
May you like
I froze.
Because the person calling was supposed to be dead.
