Chapter 7: The Man in the Photograph

“Marcus… you finally came.””

The voice echoed through the basement.

Walter raised his flashlight.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

Marcus stood perfectly still, the photograph trembling between his fingers.

The man in the background had a familiar face.

Gray hair.

Broad shoulders.

A narrow scar above his left eyebrow.

Marcus knew that face.

Everyone at Reedstone knew it.

“Daniel?”” Marcus whispered.

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“You said he was dead.””

“I said—”

“You said my father was poisoned.””

“I know.””

“And that photograph was taken eight years ago.””

Evelyn’s face had gone white.

“I know.””

Marcus lifted the photograph.

“Then who is that?””

A floorboard creaked somewhere behind them.

Walter swung the flashlight.

Nothing.

Marcus took one slow step toward the sound.

“Come out.””

Silence.

He took another.

“Whoever you are, come out.””

A figure emerged from behind a row of storage shelves.

Older.

Thinner.

His hair almost completely gray.

But the face was unmistakable.

Marcus stopped breathing.

“Dad?””

The man looked at him.

For one impossible second, Marcus was twelve years old again, standing in his father’s office, waiting for permission to take the company car.

Then reality crashed back.

The man smiled sadly.

“Hello, son.””

Marcus staggered backward.

Walter caught his shoulder.

“Mr. Reed…”

Marcus pushed forward.

“You’re dead.””

Daniel Reed nodded.

“That was the idea.””

Evelyn began crying.

Marcus turned on her.

“You knew.””

She covered her mouth.

“You knew he was alive.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Evelyn kept her promise.””

Marcus laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“She lied to me for eight years.””

“She protected you.””

“You let me bury you!””

Daniel’s expression cracked.

“I know.””

“You let me stand at your grave!””

“I know.””

“You let me think you were gone.””

“I had no choice.””

Marcus stepped toward him.

“You always had a choice.””

Daniel looked down.

“You're right.””

That answer stopped Marcus.

His father had never admitted fault easily.

Not when Marcus was a child.

Not when employees challenged him.

Not even when Marcus had left the company for two years after their biggest argument.

But now the old man stood in a dark basement and simply accepted the accusation.

Marcus lowered the photograph.

“Why?””

Daniel pointed toward the folder.

“Because of what’s in there.””

Marcus opened it.

There were copies of bank transfers.

Corporate documents.

Medical records.

Photographs.

And one page titled:

*OPERATIONAL CONTROL TRANSFER.*

Marcus read the first paragraph.

Then looked up.

“My company was supposed to be transferred?””

Daniel nodded.

“Not your company.””

Marcus frowned.

“Reedstone.””

“Reedstone was only the beginning.””

Walter looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel turned toward him.

“You’re Walter.””

Walter nodded cautiously.

“You know me?””

“I know every guard who was employed here when I disappeared.””

Walter stared.

Daniel smiled faintly.

“You used to bring your lunch to the loading dock.””

Walter’s eyes widened.

“You remember that?””

“I remember more than you think.””

Marcus closed the folder.

“Start talking.””

Daniel sat on an old wooden crate.

“Eight years ago, I discovered that several executives were building a private network of shell companies. They were buying pieces of companies that Reedstone did business with.””

“Why?””

“Control.””

Marcus folded his arms.

“They wanted to take Reedstone?””

“They wanted to take the logistics contracts. The warehouses. The distribution routes. Eventually, the company.””

“And you stopped them?””

“I tried.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“She helped me.””

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

“I didn't know how far it had gone.””

Daniel nodded.

“Neither did I.””

Marcus stared at his father.

“Then why fake your death?””

“Because they discovered I knew.””

“What happened?””

Daniel's eyes darkened.

“One night, I was driving home when my brakes failed.””

Walter whispered, “Jesus.””

“I survived.””

Marcus stared.

“You survived a brake failure?””

Daniel nodded.

“I realized immediately it wasn't an accident.””

“So you disappeared.””

“I needed them to believe they had succeeded.””

Marcus paced.

“And Mom?””

Daniel looked down.

“She knew.””

Marcus stopped.

“My mother knew you were alive?””

“For a while.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because she was being watched.””

Marcus shook his head.

“This is insane.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Your mother tried to expose them.””

“What happened?””

“She disappeared.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“She died.””

Daniel's voice softened.

“No.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“She disappeared.””

“You're telling me my mother is alive too?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Marcus stood motionless.

For eight years, he had believed both parents were gone.

Now one stood in front of him.

And the other might be somewhere in the world.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“Did you know this?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I knew Daniel survived. I didn't know about your mother.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Evelyn knew enough to keep you away from the investigation.””

Marcus glared.

“She told me you died.””

“She believed I did.””

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“You told me never to contact him.””

“I told you to protect him.””

“I did.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You protected me by letting Darren steal from my employees?””

Evelyn flinched.

Daniel's face changed.

“Darren?””

Marcus opened the payroll records.

“Darren created accounts using my credentials.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“No.””

Marcus frowned.

“You know something?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Darren was never supposed to have access.””

“Then who gave him access?””

Daniel stared at the records.

“He wasn't working alone.””

Marcus turned.

“We know.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“No.””

He pointed at the documents.

“That's not what I mean.””

He took the laptop.

He examined the authorization trail.

Then his face became grim.

“These records are designed to make Darren look guilty.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Daniel scrolled.

“Look at the timestamps.””

Marcus leaned over.

“The payroll adjustments happened at 2:14 a.m.””

“Yes.””

“Darren's account accessed the system.””

“Correct.””

“But look here.””

Daniel clicked another entry.

A second access log appeared.

“Someone entered through the executive network seven seconds later.””

Marcus stared.

“Seven seconds?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Daniel pointed to the user ID.

Marcus read it.

*MREED-ADMIN.*

His own account.

Marcus shook his head.

“Someone cloned my credentials.””

Daniel nodded.

“And then used Darren's account to cover the trail.””

Evelyn whispered, “So Darren didn't do it?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Darren did something.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel sighed.

“He moved some of the money.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“Then he stole from Walter.””

“He did.””

“But he didn't start it.””

“No.””

Marcus remembered Darren's words.

I was trying to fix something.

“What was he trying to fix?””

Daniel looked toward the basement entrance.

“His own mistake.””

Marcus waited.

Daniel continued.

“Darren discovered the diversion three months after it started. He tried to return some of the money.””

“Why didn't he report it?””

“Because the person behind it threatened him.””

“Who?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Dad.””

Daniel looked at him.

“The person behind it has access to everything.””

“To what?””

“Payroll. Banking. Executive accounts. Security.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Seven executives.””

Daniel nodded.

“Seven.””

Marcus looked at the folder.

“The names.””

Daniel pointed to the documents.

“Your father’s board.””

Marcus scanned them.

Several names were familiar.

One former CFO.

Two former directors.

A regional executive.

And two current executives.

Marcus's finger stopped.

“Evelyn.””

She closed her eyes.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Why is she listed?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“She wasn't working for them.””

Evelyn looked up.

“She was working against them.””

Marcus stared.

Daniel continued.

“Evelyn infiltrated the network.””

Marcus frowned.

“Infiltrated?””

“She helped move documents out before they could be destroyed.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I kept copies.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then why did you resign?””

“Because someone discovered what I had.””

Daniel pointed at the folder.

“They know about this place.””

Walter looked around.

“What makes you say that?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he walked to the basement wall.

There was a tiny red light blinking above an old electrical panel.

Marcus frowned.

“What is that?””

Daniel's face changed.

“Camera.””

Walter immediately stepped backward.

“Someone's watching us?””

Daniel nodded.

“Right now.””

Marcus stared at the blinking light.

“Who?””

Daniel reached beneath the panel and pulled out a small device.

The red light went dark.

Then the basement lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The laptop screen went black.

Evelyn gasped.

“What's happening?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“They found us.””

A loud metallic crash came from upstairs.

Walter grabbed his flashlight.

“Someone's in the building.””

Marcus turned toward the stairs.

Darren appeared at the top.

His face was bruised.

His suit jacket was torn.

“Marcus!””

Marcus started toward him.

“What happened?””

Darren looked behind him.

“They're here.””

“Who?””

Darren's voice shook.

“The people who took the money.””

Another crash echoed through the warehouse.

Darren hurried down the stairs.

“They know your father is alive.””

Marcus stared at him.

“How?””

Darren looked directly at Evelyn.

“She told them.””

Evelyn's face collapsed.

“No.””

Darren pointed at her.

“She made one call.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I didn't.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Darren stared at him.

“You.””

His face went pale.

“I thought you were dead.””

Daniel answered quietly.

“You helped make everyone believe it.””

Darren shook his head.

“I didn't know.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You knew enough.””

A car engine roared outside.

Then another.

Walter looked toward the basement window.

Headlights swept across the dusty floor.

Marcus grabbed the folder.

“How many?””

Daniel listened.

“Four cars.””

Evelyn whispered, “We have to leave.””

Daniel nodded.

“There's another exit.””

Marcus looked at his father.

“You planned for this?””

Daniel gave him a grim smile.

“I've been planning for eight years.””

He pulled open a concealed panel behind the filing cabinets.

A narrow passage appeared.

Marcus stared into the darkness.

Daniel handed him the folder.

“Take this.””

“What about you?””

“I'll follow.””

A heavy impact shook the warehouse doors.

Someone shouted upstairs.

“Marcus Reed!””

Everyone froze.

A second voice followed.

“Come out!””

Marcus looked at his father.

Daniel's expression became deadly serious.

“They're not here for the money.””

“Then what do they want?””

Daniel looked at the folder in Marcus's hands.

“They want the evidence.””

Another impact.

The doors began to crack.

Daniel pushed Marcus toward the passage.

“Go.””

Marcus hesitated.

May you like

Then the warehouse lights went out.

In the darkness, a gunshot echoed from upstairs.
