Chapter 6: The Name on the Photograph

The photograph felt heavier than paper.

I stared at the little girl standing beside my father, my mind refusing to connect what my eyes already understood.

Same dark curls.

Same narrow chin.

Same tiny scar above the left eyebrow.

Mine.

I touched my eyebrow with trembling fingers.

“That’s me.””

Julian said nothing.

Captain Reed stepped closer.

“Let me see it.””

I handed him the photograph.

He looked at it for several seconds, and the color drained from his face.

Daniel whispered, “She was never supposed to see that.””

I turned sharply.

“Stop saying that.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Rachel—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You’ve spent years making decisions about what I’m allowed to know about my own life.””

I pointed at the photograph.

“Who is the woman holding my hand?””

Nobody answered.

Julian finally spoke.

“Her name was Eleanor Shaw.””

My heart stopped.

“Eleanor?””

“The accountant.””

“Elliot Shaw was a man.””

Julian nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked again.

The woman in the photograph had dark hair pulled into a bun. She stood beside my father with one hand on my shoulder.

“You said Elliot.””

“I said the name,” Julian replied.

“I didn’t say the person was who you assumed.””

Captain Reed looked at Julian.

“You changed the records.””

Julian’s eyes narrowed.

“I protected the family.””

“From what?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“From the truth.””

I felt something inside me snap.

“My whole life is suddenly a lie, and you’re calling that protection?””

Julian lowered his voice.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then ask Dad.””

“He’s dead.””

“No.””

The word came softly.

I stared at him.

Julian glanced toward the service corridor.

“Not all of him.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What did you do?””

Julian ignored him.

He looked only at me.

“Room 17 contains something your father left behind.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

“Of what?””

“His final conversation.””

“With whom?””

Julian hesitated.

“With your mother.””

My chest tightened.

“My mother has been dead for eleven years.””

“I know.””

“Then how could she be there?””

Julian said nothing.

Captain Reed took the photograph from my hand.

“Where did you get this?””

Julian’s expression hardened.

“From the same place I got the truth.””

“Which is?””

“Room 17.””

He reached inside his coat again.

This time, he pulled out a small silver key card.

“There’s another entrance.””

He held it toward me.

I didn’t take it.

“Why are you helping me?””

His face changed.

For one brief second, my brother looked exhausted.

“Because I made one mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“I believed I could control the people who were controlling us.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You finally admit it.””

Julian looked at him.

“You should have walked away when you had the chance.””

“And you should have told Rachel.””

“I was trying to keep her alive.””

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

I looked at Julian.

“Why did you say I wasn’t the daughter they knew?””

Julian swallowed.

“Because you were never registered under the name Rachel Bennett.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What?””

“You were adopted.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

Julian’s eyes softened.

“Rachel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not possible.””

“My parents raised you.””

“They were my parents.””

“Yes.””

“Then don’t call it adoption like I was some stranger they brought home.””

“They loved you.””

“Then who were my biological parents?””

Julian looked at Captain Reed.

Captain Reed closed his eyes.

“Tell her,” I said.

Julian whispered, “Eleanor Shaw.””

I couldn't breathe.

“The woman in the photograph?””

“Yes.””

“And my father?””

“He wasn’t your biological father.””

My hands began to shake.

“Then why did he raise me?””

“Because Eleanor was his closest friend.””

Daniel spoke softly.

“She knew something.””

“What?””

“She knew where the money was going.””

I turned toward him.

“Why would that make her give me to my father?””

“Because,” Julian said, “someone was killing everyone connected to the accounts.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“What happened to her?””

Julian didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

“She disappeared.””

“Like Elliot.””

“There was no Elliot.””

I looked at him.

“There was only Eleanor.””

The corridor seemed suddenly silent.

Then I noticed something written along the bottom edge of the photograph.

A date.

And beneath it, two initials.

*E.S. — T.B.*

Eleanor Shaw.

Thomas Bennett.

I turned the photograph over.

The handwriting on the back was my father’s.

There was one final sentence beneath the six words I had already read.

*If she ever discovers the truth, she must know why we chose her.*

My eyes lifted.

“Chose me for what?””

Julian’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

The phone rang again.

Then a message appeared.

Julian read it.

His face went white.

“What?””

He slowly looked up.

“They found Room 17.””

Captain Reed swore under his breath.

“How?””

Julian looked directly at me.

“They followed you.””

May you like

Then the service doors at the end of the corridor slammed shut.

And from the other side came the sound of someone turning the lock.
