Chapter 2: The Recording Changed Everything
For several seconds, I couldn't bring myself to press play.
The living room had gone strangely quiet. Outside, a lawn mower hummed somewhere down the street. A car passed our house, its tires whispering over the pavement.
Inside, my wife stood beside the sofa, gripping its backrest.
My father waited near the armchair.
I opened the security application and selected the most recent recording.
Vanessa moved toward me.
“Daniel, look at me.””
I kept my eyes on the tablet.
“I'm looking at the footage.””
“Please, just listen to me first.””
“You've had my attention since I walked through that door.””
Her mouth opened, then closed.
Dad shifted his weight but stayed where he was.
I found the timestamp and dragged the recording backward a few minutes.
The screen displayed the living room from the camera's fixed, wide-angle view. The image was slightly distorted at the edges, but everything important was visible: the sofa, the coffee table, the armchair, and the hallway entrance.
My father stood beside the armchair.
Vanessa stood several feet away.
Neither of them was touching the other.
I leaned closer.
“Turn it up,” Vanessa said.
I glanced at her.
“Why?””
“So you can hear what he was saying.””
The camera had no useful audio beyond a faint room hum. I knew that. I had configured the system myself.
“You know this camera doesn't record clear audio,” I said.
She looked away.
I pressed play.
The footage moved forward.
Dad remained beside the armchair, apparently explaining something with a small movement of his hands. Vanessa stood near the sofa, her shoulders rigid.
Then she glanced toward the hallway.
She looked toward the security camera.
And she grabbed the shoulder seam of her own blouse.
I stopped breathing.
On the tablet, Vanessa pulled sharply at the fabric. The material stretched beneath her fingers.
She looked toward Dad again.
He hadn't moved.
Then, without him approaching her, she dropped onto the rug beside the sofa.
She landed on her side, braced herself with one hand, and immediately clutched her shoulder.
My thumb froze over the screen.
I replayed the last few seconds.
Once.
Twice.
The same sequence unfolded both times.
My father stood beside the armchair.
Vanessa pulled her blouse.
Vanessa dropped to the floor.
No contact.
No attack.
Nothing resembling the scene she had described.
I slowly lifted my eyes toward my wife.
“Vanessa... you did this to yourself?””
She stared at me.
For the first time since I'd entered the room, she had no immediate answer.
Her outstretched hand lowered to her side.
Dad remained silent behind me.
I looked back at the recording, hoping there was some missing detail that could make sense of what I had just watched.
Maybe the angle concealed something.
Maybe the recording had skipped a moment.
Maybe there was an explanation I hadn't considered.
But the footage continued to show the same undeniable distance between them.
I stopped the video and turned toward my father.
“You didn't touch her?””
“No.””
“Not even when she fell?””
Dad shook his head.
“I didn't know what she was doing until she was already on the floor.””
His voice remained steady, but his eyes were wet.
“I came here to speak with her about something important. She became upset. I told her we should wait until you got home.””
I swallowed.
“About what?””
He looked at Vanessa.
She immediately stepped forward.
“That's not what happened.””
Dad turned toward her.
“Then tell him what happened.””
“You were pressuring me!”” Vanessa snapped.
The change in her voice startled me. A moment earlier, she had sounded frightened and weak. Now her words came out sharp enough to cut through the room.
Dad didn't respond.
Vanessa turned to me, her expression shifting again.
“Daniel, you have to understand. Your father has never liked me.””
“That's not what I asked,” I said.
She blinked.
I held up the tablet.
“I asked why you pulled your own blouse and threw yourself onto the floor.””
“I didn't throw myself anywhere!””
I tapped the screen and replayed the moment.
She watched herself do it.
Her lips parted.
Then she looked away.
“People do strange things when they're scared,” she muttered.
“Scared of what?””
She rubbed her arms.
“Of him.””
I pointed toward the screen.
“He was standing over there, Vanessa. He never came near you.””
“He doesn't have to touch me to intimidate me!””
Dad closed his eyes briefly.
“Vanessa, please stop.””
She swung toward him.
“Don't tell me what to do!””
The words seemed to surprise even her.
I lowered the tablet.
“Why did you tell me he attacked you?””
“Because he was making me uncomfortable!””
“That's not the same thing.””
“He was trying to interfere in our marriage!””
My father finally looked directly at me.
“Daniel, I came here because I found something you need to know.””
Vanessa went completely still.
I noticed it this time.
Her shoulders tightened. Her fingers curled against the sofa. The color seemed to drain from her face.
“What did you find?”” I asked.
Dad hesitated.
Then he reached into the pocket of his olive cardigan and withdrew a folded sheet of paper.
Vanessa took a quick step forward.
“No.””
It was barely more than a whisper.
Dad held the paper against his chest.
“Daniel, before you make another decision about me, you need to see this.””
I reached for it.
Vanessa grabbed my wrist.
“Don't read that!””
I stared at her hand until she released me.
“What is on that paper?””
She shook her head.
“Nothing. It's private.””
Dad unfolded the sheet.
At the top was the name of a bank.
Beneath it was an account number, a date, and a series of transactions.
My father placed the paper on the coffee table beside the tablet.
“I didn't come here to hurt your marriage,” he said.
“I came because someone has been using your name.””
I looked down at the document.
Then I saw the amount circled in red.
Forty-eight thousand dollars.
My name was printed beneath it.

And the signature authorizing the transfer looked almost exactly like mine.
Almost.
