Chapter 5: Anna's Ring

For three seconds, nobody moved.

David stared at the ring on the chapel floor.

It was a plain gold band.

Thin.

Scratched along one side.

There was a tiny dent near the bottom where Anna had once caught it on the metal gate outside their house. She had laughed about it afterward, holding up her hand and saying, “I guess even the ring needs a little battle damage.””

David had teased her for being dramatic.

She had kissed him anyway.

Now it lay on cold marble with a dark smear of blood across the gold.

Sophie was crying against his chest.

“Daddy?””

David tightened his arms around her.

“I’m here.””

Maya crouched beside them.

“Is she hurt?””

“No.””

“Then stay down.””

Ethan was already moving.

He reached the corner of the corridor, looked both ways, then disappeared through the same service door the attacker had used.

“Ethan!””

David's shout echoed.

No answer.

Maya looked toward the ring.

“Don't touch it.””

David barely heard her.

He was already reaching.

Maya grabbed his wrist.

“David.””

He looked at her.

“That's not just Anna's ring.””

“What?””

She pointed at the blood.

“Look closely.””

David leaned down.

The blood wasn't smeared randomly.

It covered the inside edge.

As if someone had worn it.

Then pulled it off.

David’s stomach turned.

“That's blood.””

Maya nodded.

“Whose?””

A voice answered from behind them.

“Not mine.””

They turned.

Ethan stood at the end of the corridor.

His right sleeve was torn.

Blood ran down his hand.

David stared.

“You're bleeding.””

Ethan looked at the cut.

“Glass.””

“Where were you?””

“Outside.””

“What happened?””

“Someone tried to get to Lauren.””

David stood.

“You saw them?””

“I saw someone run through the parking lot.””

“Who?””

“Too dark.””

David looked at the chapel doors.

“She disappeared.””

Ethan nodded.

“You should assume that was intentional.””

David glanced down at the ring again.

“Why would someone leave this?””

Ethan's expression changed.

“I don't think they did.””

Maya asked, “Then how did it get here?””

Ethan approached slowly.

He crouched beside the ring without touching it.

“Anna never wore this ring after she died.””

David frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“I mean the ring recovered from the accident wasn't this one.””

David's face went blank.

“What?””

Ethan looked at him.

“Your father showed me photographs from the crash investigation.””

“You've seen the evidence?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I helped get the investigators paid to stop asking questions.””

David took a step back.

“You were involved?””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“I was trying to keep the people who killed her from realizing I was still alive.””

David looked at the ring.

“If this isn't the one from the accident…”

“Then someone kept Anna's real ring.””

Maya whispered, “For six years?””

Ethan nodded.

“Apparently.””

David crouched.

He studied the inside of the band.

There was a tiny engraving.

*D + A / 06.14*

Their wedding date.

He remembered giving it to her.

The jeweler had accidentally engraved the slash too deeply. Anna had refused to let them replace it.

It's ours, she'd said.

It's imperfect.

David touched the air above the ring.

His hand shook.

“Why would someone have this?””

Ethan looked at him.

“Because the person holding it wanted you to know they could reach inside your life whenever they wanted.””

David felt a chill.

“That's not an answer.””

“It’s a threat.””

Maya straightened.

“We need to leave.””

“No.””

David looked at her.

“Not until I find Lauren.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You shouldn't find her yet.””

“She has the drive.””

“And whoever took the drive wants her alive.””

“Why?””

“Because she's useful.””

David stared at him.

“You said she knew who ordered Anna's murder.””

“She does.””

“Then why would anyone let her walk around?””

“They wouldn't.””

David went still.

“Meaning?””

Ethan looked toward the empty corridor.

“The person who took that drive may already have her.””

Maya grabbed her phone.

“I’m calling security.””

“No.””

Ethan stopped her.

“Why?””

“Because half the security staff here was hired through your father's office.””

Maya's hand froze.

David looked at Ethan.

“How much of this wedding did you plan?””

“None.””

“How much did my father?””

Ethan gave him a tired look.

“Enough.””

David pulled out his phone.

There were seventeen missed calls.

His father's name appeared six times.

His attorney twice.

A number he didn't recognize nine times.

Then a text came through.

*DO NOT CALL THE POLICE.*

Another arrived immediately.

*THEY HAVE SOPHIE'S SCHOOL RECORDS.*

David's blood ran cold.

A third message.

*COME TO THE OLD MERCER WAREHOUSE ALONE.*

Maya saw his face.

“What?””

David showed her.

Ethan read over his shoulder.

“No.””

David looked at him.

“You know the place?””

“Yes.””

“Then we're going.””

“Not alone.””

“The message said alone.””

“I don't care.””

David started toward the exit.

Ethan caught his shoulder.

“You don't understand what the warehouse is.””

“Then explain.””

“It wasn't just a storage facility.””

“What was it?””

“A meeting place.””

“For who?””

“Your father.””

David stopped.

“What did he meet there?””

Ethan's answer came slowly.

“Everyone he needed to disappear.””

The drive.

The money.

Anna.

Lauren.

His father.

Ethan.

All of it seemed to converge in one place.

David looked at Maya.

“Take Sophie home.””

Sophie immediately shook her head.

“No.””

David crouched.

“Sweetheart…”

“I want to come.””

“No.””

“You said you wouldn't leave me.””

David's throat tightened.

“I’m not leaving you.””

“Then don't send me away.””

Maya knelt beside them.

“Sophie, your dad needs to do something dangerous.””

Sophie looked at David.

“Like when Mom died?””

The question knocked the air out of him.

David stared.

“What did you just say?””

Sophie looked confused.

“Mom said Daddy shouldn't go somewhere dangerous.””

“When?””

“Before.””

“Before what?””

“Before she died.””

David's pulse raced.

“What else did she say?””

Sophie thought.

“She said someone was lying.””

“Who?””

“I don't remember.””

“Try.””

Sophie pressed her lips together.

Then she whispered, “Grandpa.””

David's stomach dropped.

Maya stared.

“What did Anna say about Grandpa?””

Sophie looked at the floor.

“She said Grandpa was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

Sophie shook her head.

“I don't know.””

David touched her cheek.

“Anything else?””

Sophie hesitated.

Then:

“She said if Daddy ever found out about the secret, he should look underneath the blue door.””

Ethan's face changed.

“Blue door?””

David looked at him.

“What?””

“I know that door.””

“Where?””

“At the warehouse.””

The silence returned.

David stood.

“Then we're going.””

Ethan nodded.

“I’ll drive.””

“No.””

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“David.””

“You've been hiding from me for six years.””

“I know.””

“I don't know who I can trust.””

“You shouldn't trust me.””

“That's the first honest thing you've said.””

Ethan looked away.

David took his keys from his pocket.

“I’m driving.””

They left through a side entrance while Maya kept Sophie close.

The morning sun was too bright.

The church courtyard was filled with guests pretending not to stare.

David didn't look at any of them.

He got behind the wheel.

Ethan climbed into the passenger seat.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Ethan said, “You want to know what happened the night Anna died.””

David kept his eyes on the road.

“Yes.””

“She called me.””

“What time?””

“11:18 p.m.””

David’s hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Why?””

“She said someone had broken into your house.””

“You weren't there?””

“No.””

“Then how did you know?””

“Because I heard the man in the background.””

David glanced at him.

“What man?””

Ethan's face hardened.

“Your father.””

David nearly missed the turn.

“You're saying my father was in my house that night?””

“Yes.””

“And Anna was afraid of him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she get in her car?””

“Because she was trying to get away.””

David said nothing.

Ethan continued.

“She was supposed to meet me.””

“Where?””

“Behind the warehouse.””

David's heart stopped.

“But she never made it.””

“No.””

“Because her brakes were cut.””

“Yes.””

“Who cut them?””

Ethan looked out the window.

“I don't know.””

David slammed his palm against the steering wheel.

“Then what do you know?””

Ethan finally turned toward him.

“I know what Anna told me five minutes before she left your house.””

David looked at him.

“What?””

“She told me your father wasn't alone.””

“Who was with him?””

Ethan's expression went dark.

“Lauren.””

The car went silent.

David felt as if someone had driven a knife beneath his ribs.

“No.””

“She was there.””

“No.””

“She was twenty feet away when Anna came out.””

“You saw her?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Anna made me promise.””

David's voice broke.

“What did she promise you?””

Ethan looked at him.

“To keep Sophie alive.””

David's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman's breathing came through the line.

“David?””

His heart stopped.

“Lauren?””

A whisper.

“Don't go to the warehouse.””

David's foot eased off the accelerator.

“Where are you?””

“I don't have much time.””

“Where are you?””

“I was wrong.””

“About what?””

Silence.

Then Lauren said the words that made Ethan sit upright.

“Anna didn't write those letters.””

David frowned.

“What?””

A man's voice came onto the line.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Your wife did not die because she knew too much.””

David gripped the phone.

“Who is this?””

The man chuckled softly.

“You still don't recognize my voice?””

David's face went white.

He knew it.

He had heard it at board meetings.

At family dinners.

At Christmas.

Then the man spoke one more sentence.

“Turn the car around, David.””

And David realized the voice belonged to the one person he had never suspected.

Ethan looked at him.

“Who?””

David couldn't answer.

Because the caller had just said:

“Your father isn't the man who killed Anna.””

May you like

A pause.

“He was the man who helped me hide her.””
