Chapter 4: The Brother Who Set Her Up

“Dad, please tell me I heard that wrong.””

Danielle stood beside the restaurant entrance, holding Amara against her chest.

Richard didn't answer immediately.

He was staring at his phone.

The message from his son remained on the screen.

*Keep her away from the private room.*

Beneath it was the photograph of Danielle.

Her beige blouse.

Her brown shoulder bag.

Her newborn daughter.

Someone had known exactly what she would be wearing before she arrived.

Someone had made sure Victoria knew she was coming.

And that someone was Daniel Brooks.

Richard's oldest son.

Danielle's brother.

“Dad?”” she whispered again.

Richard finally looked at her.

“I need you to stay with Margaret.””

“Why?””

“Because I need to understand what's happening.””

Danielle shook her head.

“No. You don't get to tell me to sit somewhere while everyone discusses my life behind closed doors.””

Richard looked at her for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

“You're right.””

He turned toward the security director.

“Bring Daniel to the foyer. Nobody touches him. Nobody tells him what we found.””

“Yes, sir.””

Danielle looked down at Amara.

Her daughter had finally fallen asleep.

The little girl's cheeks were still slightly pink from crying.

Danielle gently kissed her forehead.

Three days earlier, Daniel had called her.

He had sounded unusually affectionate.

He asked about the baby, asked whether she was sleeping, and even offered to arrange transportation to the family dinner.

Danielle remembered laughing.

“Daniel, I have a car seat. I'm not traveling with a limousine.””

He had laughed too.

“Come on, little sister. Let your big brother spoil you.””

She had believed him.

Now she wondered whether every word had been part of a plan.

The private dining corridor opened.

Daniel emerged wearing a navy designer suit, a white shirt, and an expensive watch.

He was thirty-five, six years older than Danielle.

He had their father's height, their mother's sharp features, and a confidence that sometimes crossed the line into arrogance.

He was also the executive vice president of the family restaurant group.

He stopped when he saw his father.

“Dad.””

Richard didn't smile.

“Daniel.””

Daniel glanced at Danielle.

“Hey, little sis.””

Danielle stared at him.

“Don't.””

His smile faded.

“What?””

“Don't call me that.””

Daniel looked confused.

Then he noticed the baby.

“Is Amara okay?””

Danielle didn't answer.

Richard held up his phone.

“Explain this.””

Daniel glanced at the screen.

For a fraction of a second, his face changed.

Then he shrugged.

“It's not what you think.””

Richard's voice was cold.

“Then tell me what it is.””

Daniel slipped his hands into his pockets.

“I was trying to prevent an awkward situation.””

“What situation?””

“Danielle showing up unannounced.””

Danielle let out a disbelieving laugh.

“I showed up with an invitation you sent me.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I didn't send you an invitation.””

The words landed harder than the slap.

Danielle blinked.

“What?””

Daniel sighed.

“I told you there was a family dinner. I never said you were officially invited.””

Richard stepped closer.

“You personally told her to attend.””

“I said she could come if everything was arranged.””

“Everything was arranged,” Danielle replied.

“You sent me the address and the time.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You misunderstood.””

Danielle looked at her father.

Then at her brother.

“Are you seriously doing this?””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Danielle, this isn't the place.””

“You made it the place.””

Richard turned to his son.

“Why did you send that photograph to Victoria?””

Daniel glanced toward the manager's office.

“I wanted her to know Danielle might arrive.””

“Why?””

“Because we had a private corporate event scheduled.””

Richard looked around the nearly silent foyer.

“This was a family dinner.””

Daniel sighed.

“Dad, we were also hosting investors. There were people from New York coming in. We couldn't have confusion at the entrance.””

Danielle shook her head.

“So you told them to keep me away?””

“I didn't say that.””

Richard tapped the phone.

“Those are your words.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“I meant they should verify your identity.””

“Did you know she had an invitation?”” Richard asked.

Daniel didn't answer.

Richard repeated the question.

“Did you know?””

“Yes.””

“And you still told them to keep her away?””

Daniel looked at his father.

“Because I didn't want her attending.””

The foyer went completely silent.

Danielle felt her throat tighten.

“Why?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Because you always make things complicated.””

“Complicated?””

“You refuse to understand how this business works.””

Danielle stared at him.

“I haven't worked for the company in years.””

“Exactly.””

Richard's expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at his father.

“You've spent your entire life building this business. I've spent the last ten years protecting it. I've negotiated contracts, managed expansion, dealt with investors, and cleaned up problems.””

“And?””

“And Danielle gets to walk in whenever she wants and everybody is expected to treat her like royalty.””

Danielle looked genuinely stunned.

“I have never asked anyone to do that.””

“You don't have to ask. Your last name does it for you.””

Richard stepped between them.

“Watch your mouth.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“That's the problem, Dad. You always protect her.””

Richard's voice dropped.

“She is your sister.””

“And I'm your son!””

For the first time, Daniel raised his voice.

His words echoed through the foyer.

A few diners turned toward them.

Daniel pointed at the restaurant.

“I've been working here since I was twenty-five. I sacrificed weekends, holidays, relationships. I took this company from a single restaurant operation into a major business.””

Richard listened.

Then he asked one question.

“Did you tell Victoria to let your sister enter the restaurant?””

Daniel hesitated.

“No.””

“Did you tell her to treat Danielle respectfully?””

“Dad—”

“Did you?””

Daniel looked away.

“No.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Then you didn't protect this business. You used it to punish your sister.””

Daniel's face reddened.

“I wasn't trying to punish her.””

Danielle finally spoke.

“Then what were you trying to do?””

Daniel looked at her.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he muttered, “You don't understand.””

“Help me understand.””

He glanced at the baby.

“Ever since you had that child, everything has changed.””

Danielle frowned.

“What does Amara have to do with this?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Nothing. Forget it.””

“No. Say it.””

Richard watched his son.

Daniel exhaled.

“You know Dad planned to give you something at dinner.””

Danielle shook her head.

“No.””

“He was going to announce the family foundation.””

Richard's expression remained unreadable.

Daniel continued.

“He wanted to put you in charge of the new maternal support initiative.””

Danielle blinked.

“What?””

Richard looked at his daughter.

“I hadn't announced anything yet.””

Daniel laughed without humor.

“Of course you hadn't. You wanted to surprise everybody.””

He turned toward Danielle.

“Do you know what that position means? A seat on the foundation board. A budget of millions.

Direct access to Dad. And you haven't worked a single day in this company.””

Danielle stared at him.

“I work in community development.””

“Exactly. You don't understand business.””

“I understand what happens to mothers who can't afford childcare. I understand what happens when women lose their jobs because they can't find someone to watch their children. I understand the families your restaurants employ.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Here we go.””

Richard raised his hand.

“Enough.””

But Daniel wasn't finished.

“You were going to hand her another title because she had a baby.””

Richard's face hardened.

“No. I was considering her because she has spent years helping families without expecting anything from this company.””

Daniel looked away.

Then his father asked something that made him freeze.

“Was the photograph your idea?””

Daniel didn't respond.

“Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“Did you know Victoria had a history of mistreating customers?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I knew there had been complaints.””

“How many?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you investigate?””

Daniel remained silent.

Richard nodded.

“Then you knew enough to understand what could happen.””

Daniel's eyes flashed.

“I didn't tell her to slap Danielle!””

“No. You simply put your sister in the hands of someone you knew had been treating people badly, and instructed that person to keep her away.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You're making me sound like a criminal.””

Richard's response was immediate.

“I'm asking you to explain your own actions.””

A security director approached.

“Mr. Brooks, we have something else.””

Richard turned.

“What?””

“The events coordinator sent us the complete message thread. There's an additional conversation between Mr. Daniel Brooks and Ms. Hale.””

Daniel's face went pale.

Richard extended his hand.

“Show me.””

The director handed him a tablet.

Richard read the conversation.

His expression became increasingly serious.

Then he looked up at his son.

“You told her to make Danielle leave before the family dinner began.””

Daniel said nothing.

Richard scrolled farther.

The next message was worse.

*If she insists on entering, remind her that she is no longer part of the executive family decisions. I don't want her near the investors.*

Danielle stared at the screen.

“Daniel…”

He looked at her.

“I was trying to protect the company.””

“No,” she whispered.

“You were trying to erase me.””

Daniel opened his mouth.

But before he could respond, Richard's phone rang again.

This time, it was the chairman of the family foundation.

Richard answered.

“Richard Brooks.””

The chairman's voice was loud enough for Danielle to hear.

“Richard, we have a serious problem. The foundation's financial committee has discovered irregular transfers from the maternal support fund.””

Richard stopped moving.

“What transfers?””

“Nearly four hundred thousand dollars.””

Danielle's stomach tightened.

Richard looked directly at Daniel.

“Who authorized them?””

The chairman paused.

Then answered.

“Daniel Brooks.””

And suddenly, the argument in the restaurant wasn't just about a brother who had betrayed his sister.

It was about money intended to help mothers like her.
