Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Expected

Victoria Hale had spent eleven years building a reputation at Westbridge Galleria.

She knew which wealthy customers deserved personal attention, which employees could be intimidated, and which complaints could quietly disappear before reaching corporate headquarters.

She had learned that money opened doors.

And she believed that the right people could never be held accountable.

But as the security officers surrounded Danielle, Victoria began to realize that something unusual was happening.

She pointed toward the officer who had spoken to her.

“I'm the general manager of this property. You don't give me instructions.””

The officer remained calm.

“My name is Daniel Price. I'm the head of executive protection for Westbridge Holdings.””

Victoria frowned.

“Executive protection?””

“Yes, ma'am.””

“This is a mall security matter. Marcus handles these situations.””

Daniel glanced at Marcus.

“Does he?””

Marcus swallowed.

“There's been a misunderstanding.””

Danielle looked up.

“A misunderstanding?””

Victoria shot her a warning look.

“Don't interrupt.””

Daniel raised one hand.

“Let her speak.””

The words seemed to irritate Victoria more than anything else.

Danielle carefully adjusted Amara's blanket.

“She slapped me because she said I didn't belong here. Then she ordered security to remove me. I asked what rule I'd broken, and nobody gave me an answer.””

Daniel nodded.

“Did you receive medical attention?””

“No.””

“Has anyone checked the baby?””

“No.””

Daniel immediately turned toward another officer.

“Get the medical team here. Make sure the infant is examined.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“That's unnecessary. The child is perfectly fine.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You are not qualified to make that determination.””

The teenager who had been recording approached.

“Sir, I have the whole thing on video.””

Victoria spun around.

“Put that phone away!””

The boy stepped backward.

“No.””

“I'm telling you to stop recording.””

“You're not my mother.””

Someone in the crowd laughed.

This time, nobody laughed with Victoria.

Daniel extended his hand toward the teenager.

“What's your name?””

“Ethan.””

“Ethan, would you be willing to preserve that recording for our investigation?””

“Absolutely.””

Victoria's expression hardened.

“This is ridiculous. She came in here looking for trouble.””

Danielle slowly stood.

“I came in here to exchange a baby carrier.””

Victoria scoffed.

“Then why did you refuse to cooperate?””

“Because you hit me.””

“Because you were disrespectful!””

“You hit a woman holding a newborn.””

“I told you to watch your tone!””

Daniel stepped between them.

“That's enough.””

For several seconds, the lobby was quiet.

Then a familiar voice came from behind the crowd.

“Where is my daughter?””

Danielle turned.

A tall Black man in a dark navy overcoat was walking through the entrance.

His hair was closely cropped, silver at the temples. His expression was controlled, but his eyes moved rapidly across the lobby.

He saw the officers.

He saw Marcus.

Then he saw Danielle.

The moment he noticed the red mark on her cheek, his jaw tightened.

“Danielle.””

She started crying.

Not because she was frightened.

Because her father had finally arrived.

He crossed the lobby and wrapped one arm around her shoulders, careful not to disturb the baby.

“Let me see you.””

“I'm okay, Dad.””

He studied her cheek.

“Who did this?””

Danielle looked over his shoulder.

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

“Sir, perhaps we should discuss this privately. Your daughter has caused a serious disturbance.””

The man slowly turned.

“And you are?””

“Victoria Hale. General manager.””

He looked at her fuchsia suit.

Then at the security supervisor.

“Which one of you struck my daughter?””

Victoria opened her mouth.

Marcus looked away.

“Sir, I believe there was a misunderstanding.””

The man didn't move.

“I asked a simple question.””

Victoria folded her arms.

“Your daughter was behaving aggressively. I had to maintain order.””

He stared at her.

“You slapped her?””

“I was correcting a situation.””

“You slapped a woman holding a three-week-old baby?””

Victoria lifted her chin.

“She was disturbing my customers.””

The man looked around the lobby.

At the shoppers.

At the phones.

At the frightened employees standing near the information desk.

Then he asked a question that made Daniel Price straighten his shoulders.

“Who owns this mall?””

Victoria looked confused.

“Westbridge Holdings, obviously.””

“And who is the chairman of Westbridge Holdings?””

She hesitated.

“Mr. Richard Whitmore.””

The man nodded.

“Correct.””

He reached into his coat and removed his phone.

“Daniel, call the chairman. Tell him I'm here.””

Victoria gave a nervous laugh.

“I'm sorry, who exactly are you?””

The man looked at her.

“James Brooks.””

She waited.

Apparently, the name meant nothing to her.

“Should I know you?””

James didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked toward the security supervisor.

“What's your full name?””

“Marcus Reed.””

“Marcus, how long have you worked here?””

“Six years.””

“And during those six years, have you ever received training on protecting customers from physical assault?””

Marcus shifted uncomfortably.

“Of course.””

“Then explain why you watched my daughter get struck and did nothing.””

Marcus opened his mouth.

No answer came.

James turned toward Daniel.

“Secure the camera footage. Every camera covering this entrance, the parking area, and the customer service desk. Nobody deletes anything.””

“Already in progress, sir.””

Victoria frowned.

“You can't just order employees around.””

James looked at her.

“Actually, I can.””

He turned toward Danielle.

“Sweetheart, sit down. Let the medical team examine you and Amara.””

Danielle nodded.

As she sat on a nearby bench, her father crouched beside her.

“Are you sure the baby is okay?””

“She was crying when I fell.””

“Did she hit anything?””

“No. I protected her.””

James gently touched the blanket.

“You did exactly what you were supposed to do.””

Danielle wiped her eyes.

“Dad, please don't make this bigger than it needs to be.””

He looked at her.

“They made it bigger when they decided you weren't worthy of basic human respect.””

A paramedic arrived with a medical bag.

While the baby was being examined, Victoria moved toward Marcus and whispered something.

James noticed.

“So we're having private conversations now?””

Victoria stepped away.

“I'm simply trying to resolve the situation professionally.””

“Then do it professionally. Don't touch the evidence.””

A moment later, Daniel returned with a tablet.

“Mr. Brooks, we've confirmed the chairman has been contacted.””

James nodded.

“Good.””

Victoria crossed her arms.

“I don't care who you've called. I'm responsible for this property.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Not anymore.””

Victoria's face tightened.

“What did you just say?””

Before Daniel could answer, the lobby's giant digital advertising screens went dark.

A corporate announcement appeared on the central display.

*WESTBRIDGE HOLDINGS — EXECUTIVE ARRIVAL.*

The crowd turned toward the main entrance.

A black luxury sedan had pulled up outside.

An older white man stepped out, accompanied by two executives.

Victoria recognized him instantly.

Richard Whitmore.

The chairman of Westbridge Holdings.

She hurried toward the entrance, smoothing her jacket.

“Mr. Whitmore! Thank goodness you're here. There's been an unfortunate incident with a disruptive customer.””

Richard barely looked at her.

He walked straight toward James.

Then something happened that made the entire lobby fall silent.

Richard Whitmore extended his hand to James Brooks.

“James. I came as quickly as I could.””

James shook his hand.

“Richard.””

Victoria stood frozen.

Richard glanced at Danielle, then at her injured cheek.

His expression darkened.

“Is this your daughter?””

James nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard looked back at Victoria.

“Victoria, do you know who this man is?””

She swallowed.

“He introduced himself as James Brooks.””

Richard's voice dropped.

“James Brooks is the majority owner of Westbridge Holdings.””

Victoria's lips parted.

Richard continued.

“He is also the person who personally approved your appointment as general manager.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody laughed.

And then James said something that made Marcus take a step backward.

“Richard, I want to know exactly how this woman was hired—and how many other customers she's treated this way.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Then I think we should start with the complaints that were never forwarded to corporate.””

Victoria's face lost its color.

May you like

Because there was something James didn't know yet.

And it was something she had spent three years making sure nobody discovered.
