Chapter 2: The Man Who Owned the Building

The lobby became strangely quiet.

The string quartet stopped playing halfway through a song.

The theater's general director, a silver-haired man named Richard Coleman, hurried across the marble floor.

"Mr. Brooks! We weren't expecting you until later.""

My father didn't answer.

His eyes were fixed on me.

He walked past Richard, past the security guards, and past a group of guests holding champagne glasses.

Then he dropped to one knee.

"Baby girl.""

His voice was softer now.

I looked up at him.

"Dad.""

He examined my face.

The red mark on my cheek was already becoming visible.

His jaw tightened.

"What happened?""

I looked down at Micah.

"They said I couldn't use the entrance. I showed them my ticket. Then she slapped me.""

My father gently touched the side of my face.

"Did she hurt the baby?""

"No. I protected him.""

He looked at the white blanket.

"Are you sure?""

I nodded.

Micah continued crying.

Dad took off his suit jacket and carefully placed it around my shoulders.

"Okay. We're going to get you both checked. You don't have to worry about anything else.""

Then he stood.

And looked at Victoria.

For the first time since she had struck me, the manager appeared unable to speak.

My father didn't raise his voice.

"Who are you?""

Victoria swallowed.

"Mr. Brooks. I'm Victoria Harris. The theater manager.""

He glanced at her name badge.

"I can read.""

Richard hurried forward.

"Marcus, I'm terribly sorry. There seems to have been a misunderstanding.""

My father turned toward him.

"A misunderstanding?""

Richard nodded quickly.

"We'll investigate what happened.""

Dad pointed toward me.

"My daughter is sitting on your floor holding a three-week-old baby. Her face is bruised. Your manager is standing over her.""

Richard's eyes moved toward Victoria.

"Victoria, what happened?""

Victoria immediately straightened her dress.

"Mr. Brooks, I'm glad you're here. This woman became aggressive when I explained our entrance policies.""

I stared at her.

Aggressive?

I had been holding a sleeping baby.

My father remained completely still.

"Did you strike my daughter?""

Victoria blinked.

"I was trying to control the situation.""

"That wasn't my question.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mr. Brooks, I think there's been some confusion. We asked her to leave several times.""

Dad turned toward him.

"Did you see someone strike her?""

Daniel hesitated.

"I didn't personally—"

"Then don't tell me what you think happened. Tell me what you saw.""

Daniel looked at Victoria.

She gave him a warning glance.

He lowered his eyes.

Richard rubbed his forehead.

"Perhaps we should discuss this privately.""

My father shook his head.

"No.""

He pointed toward the guests who were still standing around.

"Everyone here witnessed what happened. Why should we hide the discussion?""

A woman near the staircase lowered her phone.

My father noticed.

"Ma'am, were you recording?""

She nodded nervously.

"Yes.""

"Would you be willing to preserve that recording?""

"Absolutely.""

Victoria interrupted.

"Those recordings shouldn't be distributed. This is a private establishment.""

My father turned toward her.

"You're worried about recordings?""

She pressed her lips together.

"Of course not. I'm simply protecting the theater's reputation.""

"Interesting.""

He looked at Richard.

"Who approved the guest entrance policy?""

Richard straightened.

"The management team oversees daily guest operations.""

"Who approved the VIP ticketing system?""

"Our executive office.""

"And who authorized the treatment of my daughter?""

Nobody answered.

My father nodded slowly.

"That's what I thought.""

He reached into his inside pocket and removed his phone.

"Call Evelyn.""

Richard's face changed.

"Your attorney?""

"Yes.""

Victoria's eyes widened.

"Mr. Brooks, surely we don't need lawyers.""

Dad looked at her.

"You didn't think you needed permission before hitting a woman holding a newborn.""

Victoria's mouth opened.

Then closed.

Richard attempted to intervene.

"Marcus, we can settle this with an apology.""

Dad looked around the lobby.

"An apology?""

He gestured toward the floor.

"She was humiliated in front of hundreds of people. Her baby was frightened. And you want to solve it with a sentence?""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"That isn't what I meant.""

"Then explain what you meant.""

Before Richard could answer, a young employee approached.

She wore a black uniform and held a tablet against her chest.

"Mr. Brooks?""

Dad turned.

"Yes?""

"My name is Alicia. I work at the front desk.""

Richard frowned.

"Alicia, this isn't the time.""

She ignored him.

"I saw the whole thing.""

Victoria's face tightened.

"You were working at the opposite side of the lobby.""

"I was at the reservation station. I watched Ms. Harris strike Danielle.""

The lobby went silent again.

Alicia looked at me.

"I'm sorry I didn't help you sooner.""

I swallowed.

"It's okay.""

"No, it isn't.""

Alicia turned to my father.

"I scanned her ticket. It was valid. It was purchased through the executive guest account.""

Dad looked at her.

"Can you confirm that?""

"Yes. I can pull up the transaction.""

Victoria stepped forward.

"That is confidential information.""

Alicia held her ground.

"It's also proof that she was an authorized guest.""

Daniel touched his earpiece again.

"Security, we need assistance at the front desk.""

My father raised one hand.

"Nobody is removing anyone from this lobby.""

Two security officers who had just arrived stopped immediately.

Richard looked exhausted.

"Marcus, please. We can review everything in the office.""

Dad nodded.

"Good. Review the ticket. Review the security footage. Review the entrance logs.""

He paused.

"And review every complaint involving this manager.""

Victoria laughed nervously.

"Complaints? I've never had a serious complaint.""

Alicia looked down at her tablet.

Then she looked up.

"Actually, there are several.""

Victoria turned sharply.

"What?""

Alicia hesitated.

"I've seen the reports. Guests have complained about discriminatory treatment at the entrance. Some were marked as resolved without being investigated.""

Richard's face went completely blank.

"That's impossible.""

Alicia shook her head.

"I can show you.""

My father looked at Richard.

"Then perhaps we should start there.""

At that moment, Micah began crying again.

Dad immediately turned toward me.

"Let's get him somewhere quiet.""

I nodded.

He offered me his hand.

I took it.

As I stood, Victoria stepped aside.

For the first time that evening, she wasn't blocking my way.

Dad walked beside me toward a private lounge.

But just before we reached the doors, Richard called after him.

"Marcus, there's something you should know.""

Dad stopped.

"What?""

Richard looked toward Victoria.

Then toward the assistant.

His voice dropped.

"The incident tonight may not be the only problem. There was an issue with the executive guest account.""

My father slowly turned.

"What issue?""

Richard swallowed.

"Someone changed the reservation records this afternoon.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Changed them how?""

Richard looked at me.

May you like

Then he said something that made my stomach drop.

"Your daughter's original VIP reservation was deliberately removed from the entrance system.""
